Game Thread Ohio State vs Florida Atlantic - 08/31/19, 12:00PM (FOX)

UC's offense is really limited, even though the QB is pretty decent, and it's pretty clear that Fickell's more from Tressel's coaching tree than Meyer's on that side of the ball. The only way I think OSU gets in trouble is if Fields can't handle UC's multiple looks on defense and gives them 3-4 turnovers, and I think Day will give him simpler reads and quicker throws to make that less likely. The O may look ugly at time next week, but I think they'll hit a few big plays and will only need 21 points or so to win.

I agree that Fields' decisions (or, as you said, the play calling if some plays that looked like zone reads but might have just been hand offs) made them look worse at times, but they also were pretty poor a lot of the time IMO.

UC’s defense is much better than FAU’s. yes, I know UCLA blows. But they were good last year under Fickell and Freeman and they return a lot of starters at LB and DB. Can UC win? no. can they make Ohio State work? absolutely. plus you have the motivation of Fickell wanting to beat his big brother.

I absolutely agree that their D can muck things up. I just don't think their O will do anything and that ultimately OSU will hit enough plays to win without causing me too much emotional distress.

I'm expecting that kind of game where we see an absolutely crap Cincy team make a game of it for a half to three quarters. And then, we have Buckeye "fans" verbally cutting their wrists and running around screaming the sky is falling. The turnovers and sloppiness in the UCLA Cincy game was stunning.

We had several Buckeye fans verbally cutting their wrists and running around screaming that the sky is falling in THIS THREAD. lol.

I haven't seen the Bucks start that fast since Iowa in '95. They subbed in everyone but Fields in the second quarter, and it showed, just like when they subbed in everyone for the second half in '95. Only difference was that they didn't get tight and have to put the starters back in during the 4th quarter today.

I thought the defense was pretty dominant, considering it's all the same guys who gave up a billion yards and points last year.

Proctor is going to be a star.

Never noticed the starters come out in the second but if true that'd make me feel better about the quarter...

Just sucks the defense couldn't keep them under 2 scores though considering how well the starting unit did

something else we may be seeing; mixing in all the zone is, essentially, designed to keep things in front of you and make the other team execute over the long field betting, obviously, that they can't do it.

One side effect of that approach is that it keeps your defense on the field longer and conversely lowers the number of play per game for your offense.

Total plays vs FAU: 74
Avg plays p/game 2018: 82.4

8 plays at 6.5 ypp is about 50 yards
50 yards is about 4 points

you need to see that 4 point delta made up for in defensive PPG allowed or the trade off isn't worth it

Last years defense gave up 25.5 p/game. Today was 21

not enough to draw any conclusions yet obviously but something to keep an eye on.

I don’t know man. I understand there were glimpses of absolute dominance; however, I’m really curious about how downfield passing is going to develop. We’ve seen how badly the offense can ossify when it’s an absent approach.

I’d like to see Fields make quick decisions on a more consistent basis; the offensive line definitely had moments of criticism but I can’t act like there weren’t instances in which he had almost 5 seconds because there were plenty.

So if we are going to tell ourselves no one was open, is there not reason to be concern that this group of receivers can’t get open against the no fly zone of fucking FAU?

Not panicking, but like Platt said there is a lot to clean up (at the very least).

See I thought we just stopped going down the field and really stopped being aggressive when we went up 4 scores.

We started going under center a ton and played a number of plays with 3 TEs on the field which IMO is not ideal if we are looking to boat race people

IMO the staff killed the momentum with their play calling and personnel decisions. You could tell they really wanted to spare Justin though. There was a handful of plays that had Justin kept he would've had big gains.

Coaches saw no need to throw down 80 on them (like PED does) when we were already a fairly dinged up team and really only have 1 viable QB.

Just wanted to remind everyone of a huge (if you can really call it that in this type of game) screw job midway through the 2nd Q that changed how this game ended up looking. The blatant missed late hit on McCall and a very ticky tack PI on Olave. If either of those go the way they should, OSU has the ball in the RZ, or at the 2 yard line and goes up 35-0. Instead, the fumble happens and it turns a few punts into a long drought.

I get it, these things happen & you have to work through it, blah blah blah. But those were really bad, and if it's 35-0 at that point in the game, I think the offense gets more comfortable and we're all a lot happier right now.

Doesn't matter in the long run, but for those are really concerned it's a something you have a remember. They were still having success.

Yep lots of things to clean up no doubt...

Overall I saw what I wanted to see.

1. No big plays against the defense
2. Accurate Justin Fields

Only struggle for me was I thought the defense deserved better having barely given up 200 (starters gave up about 160).
