Game Thread Ohio State vs Florida Atlantic - 08/31/19, 12:00PM (FOX)

First four drives:
4 plays - TD
2 plays - TD
3 plays - TD
4 plays - TD

I have been watching Ohio State football for 50 years and have never seen anything like it. 13 plays in a row (not including extra points) totalling 4 TD's. That is just a bit over 3 plays per TD. Think about that.
1-2-3 TD. 1-2-3 TD. 1-2-3 TD. 1-2-3 TD. Followed by four straight 3 and outs on Defense.

That's all

FIVE THINGS: FITS AND STARTS

106353_h.jpg

Ohio State won its 20th-straight season opener – the longest active streak in the FBS – with a 45-21 decision over Florida Atlantic in Ryan Day's first game as permanent head coach.

The Buckeyes sprinted out to a 28-0 first quarter lead behind first-year starting quarterback Justin Fields and a new defensive scheme that even in its simplest form, gave the Owls fits for the entirety of the first half as Lane Kiffin's attack went 3-and-out on seven of nine possessions, mustering only a field goal.

Spackled around all those positives, the offense did run into its fair share of struggles and the defense, which did rotate a ton of reserves and kept it vanilla to a avoid giving Cincinnati much of a look, surrendered points on three of five second half series' and generally looked sluggish after smothering Kiffin's squad in the first half.

But hey, just because Urban's gone doesn't mean it still isn't on point to say that the best thing about being 1-0 is a chance to go 2-0.

With that, here are Five Things from yesterday's first real taste of the 2019 Buckeyes.

Garrett Wilson 29 snaps
Zack Harrison 24 snaps

Neither had any stats; but at least they "got their feet wet".

The only freshman that had some stats was Marcus Crowley, i.e. 4 rushes for 27 yards. I know it was "garbage time"; however, he did look pretty good. IMHO, I thought both Crowley and Master Teague (8 rushes for 49 yards) looked as good or better than Dobbins. Both Crowley and Teague are more of a "power back" and better in short yardage situations where Dobbins is more of a threat in the open field.

Just wanted to remind everyone of a huge (if you can really call it that in this type of game) screw job midway through the 2nd Q that changed how this game ended up looking. The blatant missed late hit on McCall and a very ticky tack PI on Olave. If either of those go the way they should, OSU has the ball in the RZ, or at the 2 yard line and goes up 35-0. Instead, the fumble happens and it turns a few punts into a long drought.

I get it, these things happen & you have to work through it, blah blah blah. But those were really bad, and if it's 35-0 at that point in the game, I think the offense gets more comfortable and we're all a lot happier right now.

Doesn't matter in the long run, but for those are really concerned it's a something you have a remember. They were still having success.

I was in the stadium otherwise would have posted the same at the time: fuckin refs.

All well said. Just my random thoughts on the game. Great start for Justin/defense. Saw the letdown, on both O and D, and was puzzled. Only thought was that the coaches were substituting liberally, but I couldn't follow with my roster quickly enough to identify. Will do better in subsequent games. Nice to see that the 'promises' of integrating the TE into the schemes actually came to fruition.....became clear that tOSU had better WRs than FAU had DBs. Appeared to me that most balls were frozen ropes, speaking of JFs arm strength. OL was a bit puzzling, as sometimes there was a perfect cup around the QB, other times it looked holey. Didn't see who let 'em thru, but noticed Myers and the RG had a couple of bobbles. Cannot have that against league foes, because the B10 teams looked pretty stout. Admittedly against 'body bag' teams, but still. FAU was out to stop Dobbins (they probably read BP boards saying that JK needed a big year), and kept him from the 150+ range I thought he'd have. Fields can scoot for sure, but Chuggy didn't show me much (much like Martell last year). Might have missed it, but the kid from Kentucky didn't seem to leave the pine (?). All in all, a good day....when a pundit leads with 'those darn Buckeyes, they lost the coin toss'....tOSU didn't fulfill ALL of the fanbase preposterous expectations, but good first game. Cincy will prove to be a stouter test (for the obvious connections, and they beat UCLA!). Anyway, there's plenty for the coaches to do to earn their salaries, so Go Bucks!

We should be #1. That offense was fucking amazing. Defense looks like the best we've ever had. I only got to see the first quarter, we won by like 73 right?

Glad we didn't. I think it will turn out better for us in the long run. That scoring drought was bad though. Can't go that many drives in a row without putting up points. Makes me wonder if that crazy science bio-metrics shit was involved. Just seemed like they went flat all at once for a little while. I'd hope they realize that every snap of every game is important. I almost find it amusing that I can think of more Purdue games than xichigan ones to prove that point from recent memory. With the all the guys we have that can catch the ball, they should be able to open up that running game. I want to love the defense. I just am terrified of some Indiana receiver somehow finding the 'soft spot in the zone' 23 times. As far as the O-line I hope they get nastier. They need to protect fields, but I'd sure like to see them getting our RB's to the second level consistently. Also, I'd love to see the breakdown of Wilson's snaps. Double digit snaps and nothing in the stats?

It's amazing what happens when Vegas calls in when you cover the spread in the first quarter. I've never been a conspiracy theorist, but I have no other explanation. The offense could do no wrong and all of the sudden they just shut down? No idea what happened there.

I saw a coaching staff that kept a very tight rein on a team with size, speed, and talent. I saw a head coach who kept the game in check and didn't try to run up the score. I saw the fruit of a recruiting staff put together by Urban Meyer and maintained by Ryan Day. I didn't see anything to be excited about after Justin Fields was through. Given that they weren't given much to do and their job was to eat up time, it still looked like the gap between 1 and 2 at QB is of Grand Canyon dimensions.

What stood out to me.
Fields matched Haskins first record setting outing. That tells me Day absolutely can maximize Fields abilities.
The offensive line struggled to adjust. This was their first game together and they had a great start showing potential but had trouble adjusting to FAU changes on defense. And they had a let down after the quick jump out ahead. They will watch film and get better.
The "new" defense is very good and will only get better. Love the new defensive staff!
Jashon Cornell was a beast opposite Chase Young.
The linebackers were terrific.
The tackling and execution was very good.
The schedule sets up nicely for team development going ahead.

Some post-game thoughts....

1. The Ryan Day Era got off to an auspicious start ... and then the second quarter happened. After eight minutes, it looked like the final score would be seventy-something to single digit, but then the Buckeyes suddenly forgot how to play football for the middle two quarters. Some combination of rust, overconfidence, lack of focus, and conservative coaching is probably to blame; talent is not an issue.

2. It was apparent from day one (meaning The Game, 2017) that Dwayne Haskins had a future as a NFL quarterback. That is not the case for Justin Fields. While Fields certainly had his highlights, he looks better on the stat sheet (18/25, 234 yards, 4 TDs) than he did on the gridiron. Too many times, Fields looked indecisive and slow to process, and those negative qualities go a long way in explaining the Buckeyes' offensive malaise during the second and third quarters. Fields has plenty of time to improve his overall game, but expect some frustrating moments along the way.

3. If Chase Young keeps playing that engaged and motivated, he will be the owner of some major awards at the end of the season. Young was credited with 5 tackles, 1.5 sacks, and a deflected pass, but it seemed like he was in on virtually every play.

4. Where has Jashon Cornell been hiding these past four years? After a redshirt and three seasons buried on the depth chart, Cornell exploded onto the scene yesterday with 4 tackles, a sack, another TFL, and a forced fumble. It looks like things are finally starting to click for this fifth-year senior.

5. The defense as a whole looked much improved over last season, holding FAU to 22 yards rushing on 33 carries (0.67 ypc), and allowing only two plays of 20+ yards (with FAU's longest play, a 38-yard pass, coming in garbage time). But a defense is supposed to look like that when playing an overmatched opponent....

6. No one really flashed on offense, although Jeremy Ruckert did have 4 catches for 38 yards and a pair of touchdowns. It will be interesting to see whether that was an aberration, or whether Ohio State will continue to incorporate the tight end as an integral part of the offense. Might not be a bad idea with a quarterback who seems to have problems finding receivers down field.

7. It's a win, not much more than that. There's plenty to like and plenty to improve upon. Cincinnati will be a much better test of where this Buckeye team stands.
