Game Thread Ohio State vs Florida Atlantic - 08/31/19, 12:00PM (FOX)

Some post-game thoughts....

1. The Ryan Day Era got off to an auspicious start ... and then the second quarter happened. After eight minutes, it looked like the final score would be seventy-something to single digit, but then the Buckeyes suddenly forgot how to play football for the middle two quarters. Some combination of rust, overconfidence, lack of focus, and conservative coaching is probably to blame; talent is not an issue.

2. It was apparent from day one (meaning The Game, 2017) that Dwayne Haskins had a future as a NFL quarterback. That is not the case for Justin Fields. While Fields certainly had his highlights, he looks better on the stat sheet (18/25, 234 yards, 4 TDs) than he did on the gridiron. Too many times, Fields looked indecisive and slow to process, and those negative qualities go a long way in explaining the Buckeyes' offensive malaise during the second and third quarters. Fields has plenty of time to improve his overall game, but expect some frustrating moments along the way.

3. If Chase Young keeps playing that engaged and motivated, he will be the owner of some major awards at the end of the season. Young was credited with 5 tackles, 1.5 sacks, and a deflected pass, but it seemed like he was in on virtually every play.

4. Where has Jashon Cornell been hiding these past four years? After a redshirt and three seasons buried on the depth chart, Cornell exploded onto the scene yesterday with 4 tackles, a sack, another TFL, and a forced fumble. It looks like things are finally starting to click for this fifth-year senior.

5. The defense as a whole looked much improved over last season, holding FAU to 22 yards rushing on 33 carries (0.67 ypc), and allowing only two plays of 20+ yards (with FAU's longest play, a 38-yard pass, coming in garbage time). But a defense is supposed to look like that when playing an overmatched opponent....

6. No one really flashed on offense, although Jeremy Ruckert did have 4 catches for 38 yards and a pair of touchdowns. It will be interesting to see whether that was an aberration, or whether Ohio State will continue to incorporate the tight end as an integral part of the offense. Might not be a bad idea with a quarterback who seems to have problems finding receivers down field.

7. It's a win, not much more than that. There's plenty to like and plenty to improve upon. Cincinnati will be a much better test of where this Buckeye team stands.
Surprised by your take on Justin. He was sharp I thought and for the middle quarters he showed his ability to throw while being pressured. He also had two drops as well and one of those puts the offense in scoring position instead of leading to a punt.

I questioned his decision making at times too. I'm sure he will learn though.

I have re-watched most of the first half and during the game I thought he was being told to hand off but he made some bad keep reads before that started that I didn't notice live.

Lots of room for improvement with him but as we said before, Day has been telling us this if anyone is listening.

"First 6 games, the rest of the team is going to have to carry the QB" or something very near to that.

Now we see what he meant.

I rewatched it this morning. Ball needs to come out quicker. When rolling out, guys are running open and the ball needs to be delivered on time before they are running into coverage.

Many times, curl and out routes were run and guys were just waiting on the ball. Those will be broken up passes or picks against better opponents going fwd. Those things will improve over time (hopefully), but progressing through his reads and the indecisiveness to throw or pull the ball down to run needs to happen quicker, especially when he has the time that he did against FAU.

Still had an adjusted completion percentage of 82% though considering the drops.

I agree on the rolling out issue though. I don't like rolling a player Justin out personally. Why shrink the field? Force a defense to play our offense sideline to sideline.

agreed on the completion %, as @mendensa said above, he was late on some stuff but that's to be expected. He'll improve on his processing time.

On the roll outs; that's something you do for a young QB to cut down on the # of reads and decision making. Once he's fully in command, then yes you don't wan't to over do the roll out thing (except that the D still has to respect his running ability when he rolls).

A few positives that I don't think I've seen mentioned:

1. Aggressive gang tackling on D. Lots of Buckeyes around the ball on most plays and sending guys sideways and backwards in the run game all day. Even on the "soft spot in the zone" completions, multiple Buckeyes were generally pretty close to the WR. Lots more room for error when one guy missing a tackle doesn't mean a big play.

2. Room for punt returners to actually catch the ball and do something with it. For years it seems like to have any chance of getting a return our returners would have to make a great move to make the first unblocked gunner miss. That wasn't the case yesterday.

3. Clean play by the secondary. Not sure there were any PIs called.

I have a different take of Fields’ performance. There’s absolutely no way a kid with his skill set goes out and does what he did in the first 10 minutes of that game and then becomes average, on his own. I wholeheartedly believe that Coach Day pulled the reigns, became very conservative and predictable, and probably wanted to work on some things that Justin (being in the program for only 8 months) still doesn’t have a great feel for. All of those things made Justin think more than just play, which is what he did in the 1st qtr.

A few more takeaways from Saturday.

Chase Young is the best player in college football, along with Jerry Jeudy! They have no business playing at this level. They are too good and too gifted!

The linebackers are night and day from last year! Malik Harrison is a stud! The light looks like it finally came on for Baron Browning and he looked like an animal out there. Really liked what I saw from Werner. I saw where some people are questioning why he was playing. I thought he played really well! Borland looks better, but Browning is the playmaker! Thank you, Coach Washington!

The defense, as a unit, is definitely championship level! There are superstar players at each level.

Imo, this team is a playoff team. However, unless they can figure out the run game, they won’t be able to beat Bama and Clemson. Dobbins needs to be more patient sometimes. He hits the hole a split second too soon, not allowing the hole to develop. Also, Master Teague needs no few than 10 carries. I love watching him run the ball. Definitely has home run potential.

my biggest fear is that they treat Justin with kid gloves all season long bc of the depth issues at QB and the indecision to pull it down and run vs. go through all the reads and try to make plays with his arm will be a season-long thing. The window to run vs. not run for a QB closes pretty quickly.

I just feel Justin is a rare talent and has a very special skill-set and to not fully utilize one of your best athlete's assets on the field is criminal. I agree that they have to be careful with him but they also need to let him play and not take away what he does best if they have any chance at making a run this year.

I imagine they want to continue to develop him as a passer. I just hope we get a nice balance of the 2 for this offense to reach it's full potential.

Agreed 100%

The slowdown was a pulling of the reigns on offense and back ups on defense.

JK needs to get going thought because like you said it all rests on how we run the ball. More specifically how our backs run the ball.

If all those remaining 5*s out there were waiting for a 'sign' that tOSU has it's stuff together, this is the start of a great story. The new coaches have worked some magic, and some of the question marks have been erased. The LBs showed massive improvement, and the DBs looked mostly ferocious. The OL still needs some mending, mostly picking up stunts, etc (which I don't believe the DL does?), so no practice against. WRs dropped some cream puffs, but pulled in some hard ones, but we're stacked on the 2020 WR class. RB showed good stuff, surprised to see Master Teague, but he looked good in limited action. Pick up some RBs for 2021, and some DBs as well, couple of DL bigs, and should be set. Go Bucks,
