Ohio State Now "Other Ohio Team"

I guess someone forgot to teach those UC kids that you are supposed to peel an orange before you eat it. Also, someone forgot to tell that WR that you are supposed to take the tags of your clothes before you wear them. I'd be happy to see them start playing us again.

College football: Booming time in land of Bearcats
University rallying around its coach after winning Big East

Cincinnati coach Brian Kelly left, said he has taken his name off the coaching market this winter because of promised support from the administration.

CINCINNATI -- Brian Kelly is eager to coach a football power, the kind of program that can recruit nationally and contend annually. His ambition is written into his contract with the University of Cincinnati: The school must build two practice fields and an indoor practice facility by this time next year, or the buyout on his contract is cut in half, making it easier for him to leave for another job.
For now, Kelly is attempting to build such a program at Cincinnati, and his second season with the Bearcats has folks throughout the university and the city believing it is possible.
Cincinnati clinched the Big East championship last weekend, and with it earned a spot in a BCS bowl, likely the Orange Bowl. It will be the biggest stage on which a Bearcats football team has appeared. The team is ranked 13th in the Associated Press poll and 12th in the coaches' poll, the highest ranking in program history.
Throughout these heady times, Kelly has kept one eye on the future, recruiting aggressively, campaigning for larger crowds and pushing for bigger and better facilities.
"We have moved to this level a lot quicker than anybody thought," Kelly said yesterday. "Although there was a plan there before me, I don't think anybody thought it would be two years. We thought five years."
He met yesterday morning with athletic director Mike Thomas, university president Nancy Zimpher and local businessman Jeff Wyler, the chairman of the board of trustees. Zimpher and Wyler reassured Kelly and Thomas that the growth of the program would be a priority in the next fiscal year. Specifically, Thomas said, they were told that the university plans to build the new practice facilities, increase the program's budget and pursue renovations to Nippert Stadium.

Given the history and expectations of the two programs I'd have to give the nod to the Bearcats for this year.

Not sure how you arrive at that conclusion. No way does OSU get drilled if they play at UConn, and if UC plays OSU's schedule, they'd lose to MSU, Wisconsin, Illinois, and maybe Troy, OU, Minnesota and Purdue (in addition, of course, to USC and Penn St.). Let's not lose sight of the fact that UC was the beneficiary this year of an incredibly weak schedule, and they still got destroyed by UConn and barely escaped Akron.

I reside in the Cincinnati area. As of late, the area has been in a Bearcat frenzy. Bearcat merchandise seems to be selling at an all-time high (BCS Bowl + Christmas Shopping Season = MONEY!). So, why are so many Cincinnati people jumping onto this bandwagon? I think it comes down to three things.

1. My high school Physics teacher (Lakota East, about 20+ minutes away from Cincy on a good day) said it best: In Cincinnati, you have to win to get people into the seats.

Very simple and to the point.

2. Guys, the Bengals are 1-10-1 this year. Their star QB is injured. Their loud mouth wide receiver has decided that name changes and celebration shenanigans are more important than winning. Their other receiver is thinking about leaving town. Their current starting running back is a Chicago Bears reject. Their top 10 draft pick got his jaw broken by a WR (One that hits/blocks like a safety, but still). Their two best offensive lineman, Eric Steinbach and Willie Anderson, are now with rival teams inside of the division (Anderson is with the Ravens because he was cut by the Bengals, as he did not wish to take a paycut. But still...).

I had the opportunity to go to Paul Brown Stadium to watch the Pittsburgh Steelers take on the Cincinnati Bengals. Before the game started and for the first 5 minutes of the game, the fans were full of life and energy. And then, things started to go badly. Fans began to shower the punter with boos. The crowd realized that Ryan Fitzpatrick was their starting QB. Mewelde Moore scored another TD, and the crowd whined. Nate Washington received a Big Ben Bomb, and the crowd shut their traps. Game.

Can we really blame the city of Cincinnati for embracing the Bearcats? The Bengals are THAT bad, and the city needs something.

3. The team is 10-2 and they are going to a BCS game. They won the Big East. Their head coach wants to stay for another year. Success like this got Illini fans excited. I'm not at all surprised that it is getting Cincinnati fans excited.

They were also within 7 points of Oklahoma when their starting QB broke his leg and managed ten wins while having to play four QB's this year. Slants and spins can come from both sides. The bottom line is that UC has been playing a schedule like this for years and 7-5 was usually the best they could muster. The stood in with Oklahoma in for more than half the game until injuries hit, they went on the road and beat WVU and UofL (rivalry game) and survived the hype of the Pitt game and finished 10-2. Bang on the schedule all you want, but this UC team does not lose to Wisconsin, Illinois, Minnesota or Purdue this year. The UConn game is hard to ignore, but every team has that one bad game (USC?) and I won't use the QB injury excuse that some UC fans would be quick to point out about that game. UC lost but hasn't lost since.

A typical Bearcat fan expected UC to win 6 games, maybe one or two more and to get a bowl game bid for one of those mid-week-afternoon-who's watching?-bowls. Such a season would have been deemed "a pretty damned good season" by those who judge the Bearcats In their history it would have been one of a handful of successful seasons. As for getting drilled by Big 10 teams like Purdue, Wisconsin, Illinois, seems to me that those teams had all they could handle with the likes of Central Michigan, Cal Poly and Northwestern.

Look back at the pre season , "How Many Games do you think the Buckeyes will win?" thread. Like most other BPers, I expected the Buckeyes to vie for the NC game, struggling only with USC. They were loaded with experience, they had a Heisman trophy candidate running back, a solid defense and the hottest recruit since Beanie. They still had a good season, but given their history and the expectations, the fact that the Big 10 was down, that Penn State and Michigan were home games, they fell short of what most of us expected.

You expect OSU to win and go bowling. You don't expect the Buckeyes to struggle with Ohio U. You expect UC to struggle and to be meat for the grist for teams like OSU, and you expect them to struggle to get in a Bowl game, much less finish in the Top 25 and go to a BCS Bowl.

I guess what amuses me is that people need to understand the system before they open there mouth. When the "Ohio's BCS Team" deal happened, OSU still had a great shot at a BCS game. Barring another "greatest upset of all time" by UCLA, we will be in a BCS game this year.

It would make sense to say "Ohio's BCS Team" only if and when OSU didn't get in.

in other words.....learn how the system works before you start yapping.....fucking n00bs.

"Mistah Grillz" has made my decision on which team to root for Saturday evening very easy...I hope UH thumps their asses.

Cinci losing to Hawaii this week would be one of the funniest things this season, given the timing of it.

Oh please...

For God's sake, it's the freaking University of Cincinnati. Who gives a flying fuck what they say? The more crap they talk, the more foolish they look.

Hell, I say we just crown Mount Union as the rulers of Ohio football and be done with it.
