Ohio State Now "Other Ohio Team"

Programs with multiple national titles in the past 30 years:
Alabama
USC
Miami
Nebraska
LSU
Penn State
Oklahoma
Florida
Florida State

Not exactly a long list.

no, its not, but 16 of those 30 years saw the same champion twice. and 14 others win one. I'd like to see OSU in the conversation more with this list than the other 13 they currently share distinction with, wouldn't you?

Notre Dame
Michigan
Texas
Tennessee
Washington
Georgia Tech
Colorado
BYU
Clemson
Georgia

That's the rest of the list. Still pretty good company if you ask me.

almost doesn't count but Ohio State has had a legitimate shot at the National title in '69, '73,'75, '79, '93, '95, '96, '98, '06, and '07

while UC has never tasted a football national championship, OSU's one in 30+ years is not exactly a dominating trend, either.

We also played for two more NCs over the last two years, and if it weren't for the big-game ineptitude of our previous head coach, we should've been playing for one or two more in the '90s.

I admire your support of your town's team, H&G, but you have to admit that OSU and UC aren't even in the same solar system as a sustained football program.

No, almost does not count but there is no denying OSU's power and stature in the world of college football. No question. But Ohio is a football state and UC, right-wrong or indifferently, is in BCS conference right now and they are trying to grow their program to the point where they can at least get on the corner of the same stage with schools like OSU. I'm sorry, but as an OSU fan/UC alumnus, I take it is a sign of envy that Gilyard called out OSU on the day UC clinched a BCS berth and I also see it as a player trying to grab attention for his school when just one day later the morning talk shows filled with conversation about...the Bengals embarrassing loss to Baltimore...two hours passed before ONE call was taken regarding UC football.

I completely agree, Mili. UC is my alma mater and I've had football season tickets for some time (it was actually a cheap way to support my school and games almost never conflict with OSU) but I realize they aren't in the same galaxy with OSU. But I do admire them for trying to work towards being in the same solar system some day. At least the program finally has a direction and solid leadership. I can see UC being a lot like Virginia Tech in the next 10 years. After losing 81-0 to Penn State not long ago, I'd take that.

alienating practically everyone outside of the Cincinnati area who might root for your team by talking shit about the most popular program in the state the instant you have any level of success probably isn't a good way to get on the same stage as Ohio State

I know this has been discussed various other places, but the apparent us against the world (and especially against the rest of Ohio) attitude that seems so abundant in Cincinnati does not do its sports teams any favors in terms of popularity

I agree 100%...winning is the only way to earn respect, not talking trash. UC does have some decent OOC games on the horizon (VT, OSU, Oklahoma) to try to move in the direction.

I understand where you're coming from H&G. It's one thing for some message board idiots to pretend that two top 25 years has made UC a top 25 "program" or that UC "can offer a player everything that Ohio State can." It's even alright for an overeager player to talk a little smack.

When the UC administration actually puts this nonsense onto their official athletic site, then IT'S ON! Hell, UC is far from my most hated Other State University, as I believe that they serve a purpose in the state system beyond that of your run of the mill Toledos, Kents and OUs. But the hell with that for right now. Go Rainbows.

To paraphrase the great Sonny Boy Williamson, "you ain't no big thing, UC. Replace you right away and send you back to the lowlands from where you came."

I'll say it again.

OU fan hates us because they want to be us.
Fredo of Ohio fan hates us because they think they're too good to be us.
UC fan hates us because they actually think they are us, but nobody is noticing.

No one has an issue with UC trying to work hard to have a good football team. The issue arises when UC feels the need to act like a bunch of 2nd grade classless punks and trash OSU. I would imagine that a lot of OSU fans (myself included) would have been pulling for UC to do well in the Orange Bowl before this childish garbage came out.

Add '74 to the list. A Rose Bowl win in Jan '75 would have made tOSU #1 in the final Coaches Poll that year, USC got it after their 1-point win, and an Alabama loss later that night.

This is exactly how I feel as well. My father and half my family is from there, so we've been rooting for them all season. They should enjoy the success without trying to bring down anyone else.

I wonder who's idea the whole "Ohio's BCS Team" was. Not a smart move.

I would say "act like you've been there", but they haven't. This reminds me of all the Illinois fans last year. Then look what happened to the team this season.
