Ohio State Men's Tennis (2014/2019/2024 ITA Indoor National Champs, 17 Straight B1G Titles)

BUCKEYES IMPRESS AT ITA ALL-AMERICAN CHAMPIONSHIP
Several Buckeye tennis players competed at the ITA All-American Championships this week.

Redshirt freshman Hugo Di Feo had quite an impressive performance. He went 6-1 in the tournament, only losing three sets in his seven matches. He advanced to the quarterfinals where he was defeated by the fourth-seeded Dominik Koepfer of Tulane. Despite the loss, Di Feo's performance earned him a trip to the ITA Intercollegiate National Championships in New York next month.

Di Feo could be joined by fellow Buckeye, sophomore Mikael Torpegaard. After dropping his opening match in the main draw, Torpegaard fell to the consolation bracket where he has dominated. In his four matches, he hasn't even dropped a set. He's set to face Sam Shropshire of Northwestern in this afternoon's finals. With a win, Torpegaard would also punch his ticket to New York.

On the doubles side, Ralf Steinbach and Martin Joyce were impressive. Competing together for the first time, the pair dominated the No. 1 pair in the country, Austin Smith and Ben Wagland of Georgia, 6-1 and 6-2. They fell in the quarterfinal to Diego Hidalgo and Gordon Watson of Florida, but their performance is certainly a source of optimism.

Other Buckeyes had good showings as well. Senior Chris Diaz advanced as far as the round-of-16, and the doubles team of Mikael Torpegaard and Herkko Pollanen fell in the quarterfinals.

On the women's side, freshman Francesca Di Lorenzo advanced to the round-of-16 where she was defeated by No. 29 Ellen Perez of Georgia.

UPDATE 3:30
Mikael Torpegaard won the Consolation Final, punching his ticket to the ITA Intercollegiate National Championships in New York next month.

Di Feo, Torpegaard and Pollanen all pick up victories on Thursday

A trio of Buckeyes are on to the round of 16 at the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships as Hugo Di Feo, Herkko Pollanen and Mikael Torpegaard all won matches on Thursday.

Ohio State and Stanford are the only schools with multiple athletes in the round of 16. The Cardinal had two players advance through the opening round.

Di Feo picked up the first win of the day as he took down Kevin Konfederak of Georgia Gwinnett 6-4, 6-7 (5), 6-3. After Di Feo won the first, the two played the second set on serve before heading to a tie-break. Di Feo won the first two points but Konfederak fought back to get on serve and would eventually win the breaker 7-5. In the third, Di Feo raced out to a 4-1 lead and would clamp down the win 6-3. Di Feo, the fifth-seed in the draw, advances to take on No. 70 Joao P. Monteiro of Virginia Tech in the round of 16.

Torpegaard followed with a similar looking victory over No. 13 Roberto Cid of USF. He jumped all over Cid in the first set 5-0 and would hold on for a 6-3 win. Neither player was able to break in the second set and like Di Feo, Torpegaard would lose the second-set breaker 7-5. He was then able to outlast Cid in the third set 6-4 to claim his second top-20 victory of the season. Torpegaard also took down No. 17 Austin Smith of Georgia in the semifinals of the consolation bracket at the ITA All-American Championship. The Dane moves on to face No. 22 Andre Goransson of California on Friday.

Pollanen rolled through the singles draw at the ITA Midwest Regional Championship on his way to the title and he kept the momentum going on Thursday as he downed Indiana’s Samuel Monette 6-4, 6-4. He will look for his ninth win in a row on Friday when he faces Georgia Tech’s Chris Eubanks, who knocked-off the No. 7-seed in the opening round.

Senior Chris Diaz was the fourth Buckeye in action on Friday but he wasn’t as fortunate as his teammates. Diaz was up against a red-hot Dominik Koepfer of Tulane. Koepfer advanced to the finals of the season-opener ITA All-American Championship and is the No. 10 ranked player in the country. Diaz fell behind early and lost the first set 6-1 and would then drop the second 6-4.

Francesca DiLorenzo, currently ranked as the nation's No. 1 player by tennisrecruiting.net, has signed a NCAA National Letter of Intent to continue her academic and athletic career as a member of the Ohio State women's tennis team, Buckeye head coach Melissa Schaub announced.

"I am so excited to be a part of this team and I hope to contribute to Ohio State's success," DiLorenzo, from New Albany, Ohio, said.

A five star recruit, DiLorenzo, represented the United States playing at No. 1 singles in the Maureen Connolly Cup vs. Great Britain in New Haven, Conn., and advanced to the round of 32 in the main singles draw of the US Open Junior Tennis Championship this August. This past summer, DiLorenzo won the Plantation ITF singles draw, the USTA National Selection Tournament singles draw and was crowned the singles and doubles champion of the USTA Midwest Outdoor Closed Championships in Indianapolis this June.

"Francesca is a Buckeye through and through," Schaub said. "She is the type of kid that will leave her heart on the court for her team and this university. She is an extremely tough competitor and will help take this program to the next level."

DiLorenzo also captured the state doubles championship in 2012 for New Albany High School and was named to the All-Ohio Division I doubles first team by the Ohio Tennis Coaches' Association in the same year.

Buckeye freshman Francesca DiLorenzo, finished with another stunning upset in the indoor final and claimed the singles title for the Scarlet and Gray.
DiLorenzo adds a level of talent at the top of the lineup that Buckeyes have never had before.
Will be an exciting season and some crucial decisions are bearing fruit. The upgrade for talent development and recruiting savvy for women's tennis are now under the director of tennis operations Ty Tucker.

What a great recruiting get. Hopefully this serves as notice to additional recruits next year that the women's program is building something special.

Saw a couple of things on College Tennis Today about the Bucks

Season preview - http://collegetennistoday.blogspot.com/2015/12/2016-season-preview-ohio-state-buckeyes.html

Re: EXPECTATIONS
Ohio State should go undefeated in the Big Ten and if Pollanen can maintain his level of play from the fall and if Joyce can be a solid contributor at the bottom of the lineup then this could be a special season in Columbus.

I would have thought that Illinois (with Hiltzik, Vukic, etc.) would be the team to beat in the B1G this year.
