Ohio State Men's Tennis (2014/2019/2024 ITA Indoor National Champs, 17 Straight B1G Titles)

Maryland's entry into the B1G conference in 2014 will be without a men's tennis program, unless....
After the '12 Spring season, the Terrapin athletic dept. dropped men's tennis as a collegiate sport.
At present they only field 8 men's and 11 women's varsity sports teams.
The top player on the Terrapin tennis team Vlad Stephan transferred to TSUN for 2012-2013.:smash:
At the press conference today the AD indicated the Terrapins may be reinstating some former sports programs.
Would be nice if one of them was men's tennis.

Yale Goldberg is going to Stanford. He is from Hunting Valley, a blue chip, #31 rated recruit in tennisrecruiting.com class of 2013.

But the best recruit in Ohio is Maksim Kan of Orange, according to Tennis Recruiting he has not signed, down to Texas and tOSU, he would be the better college player, w/ greater upside. i.e. Ty really wants him.

Love to see the local recruiting pickups for tOSU but the international tennis scene is a hotbed for college tennis recruiting, which cannot be overlooked or neglected.
College coaches are finding high levels of talent overseas, i.e. a nation's premiere athletes are raised on tennis and do not share training time or are allured by other sports.
Stand corrected with regard to Goldberg and Kan but I do have a problem with Coach Tucker doing so much international recruiting. I would rather give our scholarship money to guys from the United States rather than from guys from foreign countries.

I think there is plenty of talent in the United States to go after and I just don't like taking the easy road of recruiting overseas. It is done too much by other colleges in the non-revenue producing sports. Guys come over here for a couple years that help teams win NCAA championships and then go back home without obtaining a degree. It is very prevalent in the SEC and I just don't like it.

I think if we would recruit the United States harder we would be okay especially with our facilities. I know that there are a few guys around the Central Ohio region that are Division I talent but do not know if they are Ohio State talent but I do know that there are some younger guys that are very good.

The initial 2013 ITA tennis team rankings came out today and the Buckeye men's team pulled down the #4 spot after #1-3 Virginia, USC, and UCLA.
Link

In somewhat of a pleasant surprise the rankings of single's players included 3 Buckeyes with Junior Peter Kobelt the #1 overall.

Link

Great to see that the hard work of Buckeye Senior Connor Smith and redshirt Freshman Chris Diaz earned strong recognition in the rankings.

Buckeye season will start Jan. 16 when the Buckeyes will host traditional opening day opponents Butler and Xavier.

I know it is extremely early but that ranking seems a little high
for Peter. He is a much better doubles player than singles and I am not diminishing all of the hard work that he has put in to become a better singles player.

Also, with these rankings, it confirms what I have thought about Rola not coming back this year when he was a no-show in the fall.

Yep, litl, Peter has put in a ton of work, but his ranking was surprising considering an early exit in the ITA indoors in Nov.

re. Rola, I wouldn't count him out yet,

the most recent roster updated on the official site still includes Blaz Rola, but Junior Wyatt Lippert who played fall 2012 is no longer listed. :)

The No. 4 Ohio State men?s tennis team opens the spring season Wednesday with a home doubleheader vs. Butler and Xavier at the Varsity Indoor Tennis Center. The Buckeyes will face the Bulldogs at noon, followed by the Musketeers at 6 p.m.
Unbeaten All-Time
Ohio State is a perfect 24-0 against Butler and Xavier combined. Individually, the all-time series against the Bulldogs has Ohio State up, 13-0. When matched up against the Musketeers, the Scarlet and Gray enjoy an 11-0 record.
Strength of Schedule
Eight of Ohio State?s 2013 opponents are ranked in the Top 20 ? (in order of schedule) No. 6 Georgia, No. 24 LSU, No. 18 North Carolina, No. 7 Pepperdine, No. 22 Indiana, No. 9 Kentucky, No. 16 Illinois and No. 20 Michigan.
Tough at Home
Ohio State has won 148 consecutive matches in Columbus. The streak is the longest active among Division I sports. Last season, the Buckeyes were 19-0 in Columbus, including two wins in the first round of the NCAA championships.
New Role
Buckeye head coach Ty Tucker was named director of tennis, Chris Schneider, associate athletics director for sports administration, announced in August. Tucker, the 2009 Intercollegiate Tennis Association National Coach of the Year, has maintained his position as head coach of the men?s team, while also providing oversight and assistance to the women?s program.
Ranked Buckeyes
Leading the way for the fourth-ranked Buckeyes is redshirt junior Peter Kobelt, the top-ranked singles player in the Campbell?s ITA College Tennis Rankings. Kobelt started the fall season ranked No. 35, but after amassing a 14-3 record at the conclusion of the fall campaign, including a 3-1 mark against nationally ranked opponents, the New Albany, Ohio, native jumped 34 spots to claim the coveted No. 1 ranking. However, Kobelt is not the only ranked Buckeye as Conner Smith and Chris Diaz are polled in the Top 30 of the ITA singles standings. No. 13 Smith and No. 30 Diaz each had impressive fall campaigns as well, amassing records of 8-3 and 8-1, respectively. . . .

Maybe the best news for OSU tennis fans is the announcement of the return of Junior Blaz Rola after misssing the fall season.
Rola and Chase Buchanan are playing in an ITA challenger in Florida this week, so Rola will probably not return to the team until next week.

The official site has a preview of this week's OSU men's tennis matches.
The OSU tennis 150 consecutive home court win streak will probably not be tested today, but this weekend's ITA kickoff will present a challenge.

OSU tennis

The No. 4 Ohio State men?s tennis team continues the spring season Thursday with a home doubleheader vs. Youngstown State and Cleveland State at the Varsity Indoor Tennis Center. The Buckeyes will face the Penguins at 2 p.m., followed by the Vikings at 6:30 p.m. The Buckeyes then play host to ETSU, Miami University and Louisiana-Lafayette for the ITA Kick-Off Weekend Saturday and Sunday. The Buckeyes conclude the weekend when they take on Toledo at 7 p.m. Sunday.

In the ITA Kick-Off Weekend event, the host Buckeyes will face ETSU at 10 a.m., followed by Miami and Louisiana-Lafayette (not before 1 p.m.) Saturday. Sunday, the consolation match is at 10 a.m., with the championship match to follow (not before 1 p.m.).

Buckeyes Take on Penguins and Vikings
Fourth-ranked Ohio State is undefeated against Youngstown State and Cleveland State, with a combined record of 9-0. Individually, the Buckeyes have beaten the Penguins in both their meetings for a record of 2-0. When matched up against the Vikings, the Scarlet and Gray own a 7-0 record.

Another Doubleheader for the Buckeyes
No. 4 Ohio State?s first two matches of the spring season came in the form of a home doubleheader Jan. 16 vs. Butler and Xavier. The Buckeyes did not allow a point to the Bulldogs, winning 7-0. Ohio State then turned their sights to Xavier, defeating the Musketeers 6-1.

Ohio State Hosts ITA Kick-Off Weekend
No. 4 Ohio State is one of 15 schools selected to host a four team tournament this weekend as part of the ITA Kick-Off Weekend. The 15 winners at each site earn automatic qualification for the 2013 ITA National Indoor Championships. The Buckeyes have hosted and won an ITA Kick-Off Weekend event each of the last four years. The record for the Scarlet and Gray in this event is a perfect 8-0 heading into the match vs. ETSU Saturday. As a host school in 2012, No. 3 Ohio State defeated No. 29 Indiana in the championship match 4-0....

Fans can watch and follow scores of all the action from the 6 indoor courts at the Varsity Indoor Tennis Center online at:

The ITA official site has this preview of the Kickoff weekend including this info re. OSU hosting one of the 15 sections.

(1) Ohio State, (2) Miami (FL), (3) Louisiana-Lafayette, (4) East Tennessee State
With a 148 home match win streak dating back to 2003, Ohio State looks like the clear favorite in Columbus, OH. Ohio State will also have the only ranked players of all four teams on-site, tilting the scales even more in favor for the Buckeyes.
Top ranked Peter Kobelt will lead Ohio State after a pair of runner-up finishes at the ITA Men?s All-American Championship and the consolation draw of the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships. Ohio State also welcomes a pair of newcomers in Constantin Christ and Chris Diaz. Christ was voted in the fall as one of the Top 10 newcomers while Diaz?s play in 2012 has earned a No. 30 ranking.
Stacking the odds even more for Ohio State will be the return of Blaz Rola, who spent the fall season playing on the International Tennis Federation (ITF) Pro Circuit. The junior from Slovenia currently owns a 310 ATP singles ranking after successfully winning six ITF titles (four singles and two doubles).

Schedule of Play:
Sat, Jan 26? Ohio State vs. East Tennessee State, 10:00 a.m.

Sat, Jan 26? Miami (FL) vs. Louisiana-Lafayette, 2:00 p.m.

Sun, Jan 27? Consolation Match, 10:00 a.m.

Sun, Jan 27? Championship Match, 1:00 p.m.

Student-athletes are allowed five years to graduate while receiving athletically related financial aid. I'm pleasantly surprised (i.e. very impressive) that Rola has been able to maintain "NCAA academic eligibility" with all the time he has taken off.

Its also impressive that a young man would forego $30,000 earned from the professional tour in order to keep NCAA eligibility.
Looking forward to Rola's return, (he played in a Florida Futures tournament last week and in a USTA Challenger in Hawaii this week).
Would love to see him return in time for the ITA kickoff weekend, though Buckeyes may be able to hold off a strong Hurricane team without the anchor at the top of the lineup.

Buckeyes extend their consecutive home court win streak to 151, prevailing over YSU by a 7-0 score.
Playing without Rola or Kobelt in the lineup, OSU swept the double's point and then cleared the deck in singles.
In the single's 6 match lineup, the Buckeyes dominated surrendering only 7 games in the 12 sets played.
Next up tonight is a 6:30 start as Cleveland State comes to the capitol city.
