Re: Looking forward to Rola's return, (he played in a Florida Futures tournament last week and in a USTA Challenger in Hawaii this week)

I don't see his name, are you sure he's in Hawaii?

Yes I can't post a link but check the 2013 USTA challenger tournament draws, dropped a tough match in the first round to Tennys Sandgren.

How are the freshmen looking?

There are actually 4 new members of the Buckeye squad.
1. Transfer from SMU Evan Bechtel, hometown Toledo, who is a Sophomore in terms of eligibility. I think he won the OHSAA D2 state single's tournament in 2011. Has not seen any action yet.
2. Freshman Ralf Steinbach from Germany. Has a strong ITF junior record in Europe, but like Bechtel has not seen any court time in matches.

So far two freshman are standing out in terms of strong contributions to the team:

3. Freshman Constantin Christ of Germany, was ranked at 1224 (very impressive) in the USTA pro rankings, enrolled fall of 2012, and was 5-2 on the ITA/NCAA tourney portion of the fall 2012 schedule, including a win over farris Gosea of Illinois. In 2013 he is playing #6 singles in the Buckeye single's lineup. To keep his "spot" in the single's lineup he will need to "jump" someone when Rola returns.

4. Probably the biggest surprise of the new players is redshirt freshman, Chris Diaz of Columbus Bishop Watterson.
He is a surprise because many of us did not project him to contribute much to the 2013 Buckeye team. The official site lists him at 5'7" 140, which may be a stretch.
I recall observing practice last year and wondering how a high school student was permitted to practice with the squad.
The fall 2012 tournament accomplishments changed much of the way we project Mr. Diaz. Chris was entered in the prequalifying singles of the Sept. 2012 ITA tournament and won 8 straight matches in 6 days to face the #1 seed in the main draw round of 32. After a fierce battle, he dropped a 3 setter to Henrique Cuhna of Duke. The points accumulated in that run earned Chris a #30 ranking in the ITA January 2013 single's poll.
The 2013 Buckeye season finds Chris in the #4 single's slot in the lineup where he is 3-0, and paired with Connor Smith at #3 doubles where he is 2-0.

Brutus, hope that helps and answers your question.

Wow, good idea!
that is the ultimate home court advantage!
Seriously I have never played in freezing conditions
but do tennis balls even bounce when they are that cold?

They do, but not as much. (Extreme here, but same principle.)

Thanks very much...exactly what I needed. I will try to make it to a match this year. I have been slacking the last couple of years.

Glad to hear, this team and sport is a lot of fun, as far as matches to catch this year...
Lots of strong teams = exciting tennis competition coming to c'bus this year--

Beginning this weekend with OSU hosting the ITA kickoff, and the Sunday 1 pm finals.
Feb. 3, SEC powerhouse U Georgia dogs will be in town, Buckeyes would love to avenge a tough loss that dropped them from a 2/3 seed in the NCAA tournament in 2012. This one will be huge!!!
On Feb. 23, Notre Dame comes to town,
followed on 2/24 by SEC juggernaut LSU.
In March is Louisville and then the tough B1G opposition, Purdue, Indiana, Minny, Wisky and MSU.
It is also exciting to know the Buckeyes will host the B1G conference championships beginning April 25.
Some great tennis always happens and Bucks will be seething to payback the Illinois upset in last year's championship finals that broke a streak of 100+ B1G conference victories and 6 straight conference championship titles.

Some great tennis and there are no tickets or admission charges for this chance to cheer on the Buckeyes.
Give me a shout out when you plan to go, would love to connect with some fellow BP tennis fans.

Buckeyes clinch the double's point with an 8-4 win at #1 doubles.
#2 was up 7-5, 30-0, when point was claimed, their match was suspended.
Next up are the single's portion, will be interesting to see who and where Coach Tucker puts players in the lineup.
