Ohio State Men's Tennis (2014/2019/2024 ITA Indoor National Champs, 17 Straight B1G Titles)

After winning their region of the ITA Kickoff and advancing to the ITA Indoor national team tournament in the afternoon, the Buckeyes hosted the Toledo Rockets Sunday at 7pm.
What can you say but the floor of the Varsity Indoor Tennis center is spotless as the Buckeyes brought out their brooms and applied another thorough sweep job by a 4-0 score.
Winners for OSU included all three doubles teams and single's players Hunter Callahan at #5, Peter Kobelt at #2, and Blaz Rola at #1.
Next up for the Buckeyes is SEC juggernaut, Georgia, next Sunday at noon.

On the OSU Tennis Facebook page.
Buckeyes had a rough experience in Dawg pound last year and are seeking to take a bite out of the #6 ranked tennis program.
The OSU vs. Georgia match begins at Noon at the Varsity Indoor Tennis Center, 880 w. Henderson Road.
Support of a loud and rocking Buckeye student body is needed.

Clash of Elite Programs at Varsity Tennis Center
No. 4 Ohio State, No. 6 Georgia begin action at noon Sunday

The official OSU site has a preview of the visiting Georgia Bulldog match today noon at the Varsity Indoor Tennis Center.
The Southeast Conference is dominating the top 25 rankings in the ITA, so it would be huge for the Buckeyes to hold home court advantage and get revenge from a tough loss at Athens last Spring.
Listening to the video of Coach Tucker, Kobelt, and Rola you can get the feeling that this date has been circled on the calendar since last year.

In a much anticipated matchup between a pair of Top 10 teams, the fourth ranked Buckeyes will host the No. 6 Bulldogs at noon Sunday in the Varsity Tennis Center. The match will mark the Buckeyes' first meeting vs. a Top 25 program this season. The Scarlet and Gray have had a successful campaign so far during this early portion of the season. They enter the match with a 7-0 record and booked their ticket to the ITA National Team Indoor Championship in Seattle, Wash., Feb. 15 after defeating both ETSU and Miami, 7-0, last weekend. The Bulldogs recently played Clemson Thursday and defeated the Tigers, 6-0, in Athens, Ga.

Buckeyes vs. Bulldogs
Ohio State trails Georgia, 10-3, in the all-time series. The Buckeyes' wins vs. the Bulldogs took place in 2008 (4-1), 2010 (4-2) and 2011 (6-1). Last season, the Scarlet and Gray dropped a 4-3 decision in Athens, Ga., at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex.

Bulldog Bites
Three Bulldogs are ranked in the Top 20 of the ITA singles poll. KU Singh paces Georgia with a No. 8 ranking, while teammates Hernus Pieters (No. 16) and Nathan Pasha (No. 19) round out the Top 20 for the Bulldogs. A pair of Bulldog doubles teams has earned a Top 30 ranking. The tandem of Ben Wagland and Pieters are fifth in the nation and when Wagland is partnered with Pasha, the duo is No. 29.

Top 5 Clash
Entering its first meeting of the season vs. a Top 25 team, Ohio State boasts a 103-47 (.687) record vs. Top 25 competition since 2000. The Buckeyes also own a 5-3 record vs. opponents that are polled sixth in the country.

All About Stats
? With a 7-0 overall record, the Buckeyes own a 321-42 (.884) record as a Top 25 team.
? Redshirt junior Peter Kobelt leads the Buckeyes in wins with 19.
? Senior Connor Smith paces Ohio State in duals victories with six.
? Junior Blaz Rola, who made his debut vs. East Tennessee State Jan. 26, has the top dual record at No. 1 singles (3-0).
? In doubles action, the pair of Ille Van Engelen and Devin McCarthy is 6-0 overall and in dual play, a team best. The duo also is 4-0 at No. 1 doubles, which serves as a program high in 2013.

A couple areas of my interest:
1. What Coach Tucker deems his best Singles lineup:
Rola and Kobelt are obviously 1,2, but after that is lots of parity,
McCarthy, VanEngelen, Smith, Diaz, Callahan, and Christ.
That is 6 for 4 spots.
2. Whether and how Coach Tucker will settle on a double's lineup. The constants are Van Engelen and McCarthy who are playing solid and could be the anchor at the top of the double's lineup.
To date Tucker has been "experimenting" pairing Rola, Kobelt, Smith, Callahan, and Metka in diferent combinations. It seems certain that each of the first 3 (Rola, Kobelt and Smith) will find a home on one of the two double's combinations and Callahan and Metka will be in a battle to be the 4th.
How the combinations work out will be intriguing. Coach Tucker has a lot of talent to work with:
Rola the defending 2012 NCAA double's champion, (nuf said)
Smith and Kobelt who paired together in 2012 and went 26-3, and
Two long, hungry, aggressive style Sophomores Metka and Callahan.
Have to believe that Tuck will think long and hard about "breaking up" Smith and Kobelt but eventually it may come down to putting the best player with Rola to make the best team possible.
Its going to be a fun year.

This Georgia match will certainly be "the" ultimate test to the longest home win streak in all of NCAA athletics. The Buckeye men's tennis team holds that record with their current 155 consecutive home match win streak. Georgia will probably be the most competitive opponent to venture onto the Buckeye home court.

Looks like the OSU athletic program is doing whatever it takes to get a loud student body into the tennis center to make home court advantage a factor in the outcome with the SEC.

Winning the Double's point was huge key for Buckeyes.
means they only need to split the single's rather than win 4 of 6.
Looking at the lineup it appears that Coach Tucker was anticipating that Kobelt could be a stronger match up vs. #8 ranked Singh since Kobelt had success vs. the UGa last fall.
Rola matches up well vs. Pasha.
The bottom of the Buckeye lineup #4-6 is just so strong that last year's #3 Van Engelen is not even playing.
I think that Ty anticipates that McCarthy at #3 will have a tough time with Wagland and possibly Smith with Peters, but Diaz and Callahan are solid at #5 and 6.
And McCarthy prevails in his first set at #3, just to prove me wrong:wink:
