Recap of yesterday's action and Kobelt's quotes from the ITA official website.
ITA site

With three days of main draw play in the books, the championship matches for the 2012 ITA Men?s All-American Championships are set. All of today?s matches were played inside as a result of cold and rainy conditions. ...

Domijan will take on Ohio State?s Peter Kobelt, who has quietly made his way through to the championship match. ?I kind of like rolling under the radar? said Kobelt. ?That?s always kind of how I have been but it?s nice to see some results.?

Kobelt claimed a 6-4, 6-4 win over Mac Styslinger in the quarterfinals, mostly due to booming serves and heavy forehands. ?My games pretty straight forward? said Kobelt, he continues ?I hit a big serve and I try to hit a big forehand after it.?

After his straight set win in the quarters, Kobelt looked to carry his previous win?s momentum into the semifinals against Georgia?s KU Singh. Similar to his quarterfinal match, Kobelt utilized his massive serve to take the opening set at 7-5.

However, Kobelt struggled to hold serve in the following set as Singh won the second set at 6-1. ?He had a let cord winner to break me the first time and then he held a tough game after that? Kobelt said. ?It was a really close set but the score didn?t indicate that but outside the last two games it was pretty tight, but he played well, hats off to KU, he?s a very good player.?

Kobelt?s serve seemed to be letting him down again in the third as Singh raced to an early 3-1 lead. ?He got out to an early break and had all the momentum coming out of the second set? said Kobelt. ?So I said let?s just fight as hard as I can so I can scrap my way back into the match.? That he did as Kobelt went on to win three of the next four games, including a hold at love to take a 4-3 lead.

Georgia?s Singh would hold his next service game to make it 4-all and jumped on Kobelt?s serve, earning two break opportunities. With the match on the line, Kobelt came up with four timely serves including two aces and two unreturned serves to bring the score to 5-4.

Down 5-4, Singh was on his way to another hold of serve and a 5-5 set score as he took a 40-love lead but three unforced errors and a double fault gave Kobelt a match point. The following point proved to be as anticlimactic as it can be as Singh called a ball wide which was overruled by the chair official, giving Kobelt a 7-5, 1-6, 6-4 win.

Following the win, Kobelt shared his thoughts on his matchup in the finals against Domijan. ?He?s obviously a past champion here? said Kobelt. ?I have a ton of respect for him and the Virginia tennis program. Tomorrow I?m going to have to come out and play better than I did today to beat him because he?s a world class player.?...

The consolation singles final will be between Jonas Lutjen of Mississippi and Ohio State?s Connor Smith. The winner of the consolation match will also earn the right to compete at the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships

Kobelt has always had a huge serve and dominant forehand, lots of tutelage under Tuck has developed those into steady and consistent weapons.
Awesome to see the growth in his game!
Connor Smith's consolation match is set for an 11 am et start.
Kobelt's championship final will start at 1 pm et.

... Domijan earned the singles championship by defeating Ohio State?s Peter Kobelt in straight sets, 7-5, 6-1, which ironically enough is the reverse score of last year?s final when fellow Cavalier Mitchell Frank won the championship.

In today?s championship match, Domijan got down early in the first set, falling behind 3-1. ?At the beginning he [Kobelt] served really well and I had three break points on his first service game? said Domijan, who was unable to convert on his three chances. ?I think I let down a little bit mentally after that and he took advantage of it and broke me back right away.?

As the set progressed, Domijan seemed to handle Kobelt?s serve with more success. ?I think the balls started to get worn down a little bit and I think it took a lot of heat off his serve? Domijan said, he continues ?so I was able to return a lot better and get into games on his serve which I think kind of threw him off a little bit.? Eventually Domijan got his break back at 3-all and went on to take the set at 7-5 by breaking late in the set.

Entering the second set, Domijan zeroed in on building off of the late success he found in the first set as he jumped out to an early 3-1 lead. Then it happened, a critical game on his serve that could have been a change of momentum game for Kobelt. ?The biggest game of the match was when I was up 3-1? said Domijan, who went down 15-40 on his serve, giving Kobelt two immediate break chances to get back into the set. ?That was basically the match I think because if I won that game then I felt I was going to win the match.? In total, Domijan fought off three break points and with an emphatic forehand winner held serve to go up 4-1 and eventually took the match at 7-5, 6-1. ...
The consolation singles title was claimed by Mississippi?s Jonas Lutjen, who defeated Ohio State?s Connor Smith in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4.

From the seedings, looks like another strong OSU racquet squad. Good chance for the untested ones (unseeded actually) to get their feet wet against some great competition.

Gracel, it seems like these young'uns would get some good work against the seeded ones in a normal squad work out......might we see some surprises?

For those asking Blaz Rola is still in Europe playing futures tournaments this fall. Hasn't been as effective recently as he was in July and Aug.

Peter Kobelt is playing in the semis of the ITA midwest regional single's tournament today.
Regional champs will earn an invite to the ITA Indoor nationals in November at Flushing Meadows, New York.

Go Bucks!

Ohio State men's tennis: Kobelt comes up aces in victory

Peter Kobelt?s self-described ?worst day? of a recent tournament turned into the best collegiate performance of his career.
On a day when the junior felt his serve was off and the court did not play to his favor, Kobelt persevered to win the singles title at the USTA/ITA Midwest Regional Championships at Michigan State.
It was a sense of relief ? in addition to one of excitement ? that greeted Kobelt as he finished off Michigan?s Vlad Stefan in three sets on Monday to win the title.
?Anytime you win a title, it?s a special moment,? he said. ?In tennis, it doesn?t come around often. You get used to losing. Unless you?re No. 1 in the world, you?re probably going to lose every week you play.?
The New Albany graduate last won a title when he captured the 2009 Ohio Division I singles championship in high school.
Kobelt already had qualified for the USTA/ITA national indoor tournament, but...
