Ohio State Men's Tennis (2014/2019/2024 ITA Indoor National Champs, 17 Straight B1G Titles)

The ITA Announced their 2012 players of the year, the men's doubles include a pair of Buckeyes.

Stanford's Nicole Gibbs and USC's Steve Johnson have been named the 2012 Campbell/ITA National College Players of the Year, the ITA announced today. Additionally, Gibbs and doubles partner Mallory Burdette were named the Campbell/ITA National Women's Doubles Team of the Year, while Chase Buchanan and Blaz Rola of Ohio State were honored on the men's side. ...
Chase Buchanan and Blaz Rola were simply a dominating force in collegiate men's doubles this season. The duo accomplished something no other tandem had been able to pull off in previous years, claiming the three major collegiate championships in the same season - the ITA Men's All-American Championship, the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championship, and the NCAA Championship. The pair spent the entire spring atop the Campbell/ITA Division I Men's Doubles Rankings following the two major titles in the fall. Buchanan and Rola finished off the triple crown in Athens, Ga. with a 7-6 (4), 6-3 victory over Texas Tech's Raony Carvalho and Gonzalo Escobar in the NCAA Doubles Championship match. The tandem went 36-4 on the season overall, with half of those victories coming against ranked competition.

Buckeyes are making significant noise on the ITF summer circuit.
Chase Buchanan was the winner in the $10k Indian Harbor, Florida circuit tournament June 18-25. Along the way to the title he defeated teammate Blaz Rola.
In the June 25 - July 1 Innisbrook, Florida, futures tournament, Rola prevailed for the title. During his run Blaz did not drop a set and had wins over the #745, 615, 360, and 300 ranked players in the world.
Buchanan lost in the semifinals. The teammates combined to win the double's title.
The futures event this week is at Pittsburg.
Chase Buchanan and Hunter Callahan both qualified for the main draw and are also playing doubles together.

Just curious, Chase Buchanan was a senior and apparently has "gone pro" (i.e. winner of 10K). Blaz Rola was a just a sophomore. Is he playing as a pro and accepting money; or as an amature and planning on returning to school in the fall.

Rola according to top secret insider sources will be returning to tOSU for at least the fall season. Would love to see him stay for the whole year.
To retain his amateur status, Rola would not be able to accept any prize winnings above his expenses.
The total prize money for each of the FL futures tournaments was $10k, so Buchanan's winner's share was only $3-4k.
The pro futures circuit and ATP/ITF satellite tour are a tough way to make a living for many aspiring pros.

COLUMBUS, Ohio- Ty Tucker, head coach of the Ohio State men's tennis team, has been named director of tennis, Chris Schneider, associate athletics director for sports administration, announced Wednesday. Tucker, the 2009 Intercollegiate Tennis Association National Coach of the Year, will maintain his position as head coach of the men's team, while also providing oversight and assistance to the women's program.

Love this move! A while back I pm'd gracelhink and wondered what could be done to help the women's program given Ty's ability to bring success to the men's program. Glad to see the women's side is getting help.

Four Buckeyes are ranked by the ITA preseason poll.
Also several Bucks were selected to compete in the 2012 all-american tournament this weekend and next week.
Article from the official site.

Four members of the Ohio State men?s tennis team are ranked in the 2012 Intercollegiate Tennis Association Division I Preseason singles poll released Sept. 7. Pacing the Buckeyes is redshirt junior Peter Kobelt, who is 35th in the country. Senior Connor Smith (60), redshirt senior Devin McCarthy (61) and junior Ille Van Engelen (79) also are among the preseason contingent. . . .
McCarthy and Van Engelen are in the Top 5 of the doubles poll as the fifth-ranked tandem in the nation. Kobelt and Smith are No. 44. McCarthy and Van Engelen compiled a 33-10 record in 2011-12, including a 23-7 dual mark. The pair went 9-2 in the Big Ten. Kobelt and Smith won 29 matches a season ago vs. five losses. Posting a 10-0 ledger in the league, Kobelt and Smith went 20-2 at No. 3 doubles.
In addition to the preseason rankings, the ITA announced the field for the 2012 ITA Men?s All-American Championships, which will take place Sept. 29-Oct. 7 in Tulsa, Okla. Kobelt earned a spot in the singles main draw, while Smith will compete in the singles qualifying draw. Kobelt and Smith also will participate in the doubles main draw. The trio of Hunter Callahan, Kevin Metka and Wyatt Lippert will play in the prequalifying singles.

Would love to have seen Blaz Rola included in the Fall ITA rankings, but looks like he will not be back in Cbus this fall.
This summer Blaz is absolutely tearing up the European clay futures tour.
Blaz Rola activity.
I am hearing that Coach Tucker will be bringing in a top German recruit, and possibly two other German Juniors for 2013 spring season.

The newest addition to the Buckeye's roster is Constantin Christ of Germany. Constantin turned 19 in January, 2012, and has been ranked as high as 1224 in the world by the ATP.

From the activity portion of the ATP site, it appears he has been competing with some levels of success in futures tournaments in Eastern Europe.
Would be wonderful to hear that Constantin might influence a couple other prospects from Germany to don the S & G. Replacing Buchanan and possibly Rola will present a challenge for Coach Tucker.

Will be interesting to see how Constantin fares in the All American draw this weekend. Christ, Metka, Callahan, and Diaz will have an opportunity for a lot of tennis. They will try to advance from the prequalifying draw in the All American tourney at Tulsa.

I was just going to post that when I looked at the Ohio State tennis roster the other day I noticed Constantin's name but did not know his ranking. I had heard rumors that they were looking at a couple of German players with a little higher ranking. Don't know if they are coming or not.

Rola not returning this Fall sort of concerns me because I had heard that he was going to return but they were not sure if he would stay through the entire year. I guess we shall see if he returns. That would be a big blow to the program if he does not.

It certainly will be interesting to see how the younger guys play at the ITA qualifier.

Three Buckeyes are in the qualifying draw of the prestigious ITA All American tourney in Tulsa.
Freshman Chris Diaz advanced by winning 3 matches in the prequalifying segment to join Sophomore Hunter Callahan who advanced because of w/d.
Callahan had been seeded #1 in the pre-qualies.
Buckeye senior Connor Smith received the #8 seed in the qualifiying round.
These three will need 4 wins to advance to the main draw of the All American.
Buckeye junior Peter Kobelt was pre-selected to the main draw.
Buckeye double's team of Callahan and Diaz will also seek to advance to the main draw where they would join Buckeye duo of Kobelt and Smith.
Buckeye freshman Constantin Christ is listed as an alternate for the qualifiers after advancing to the final round of the prequalifiers.
Sitting out the All-Americans for the Buckeyes are Sr. Devin McCarthy and Jr. Ilie VanEngelen and Blaz Rola.

Buckeyes Chris Diaz and Connor Smith each won their first and second round matches in the ITA All American qualifiers.
To advance to the main draw they will need to win one more round.
Unfortunately for one of the Buckeyes that will be impossible since they face each other in the 3rd round.
Buckeye double's team of Diaz and Hunter Callahan will try to qualify for the All American main draw at 3:30 today.

Redshirt Freshman Chris Diaz of the Buckeye men's tennis team pulled off the upset of the tournament as he became the only player to advance through both the prequalifying round and the qualifier and earn admission into the prestigious ITA All American main draw. Today Diaz defeated Buckeye senior Connor Smith 7=6, 6-2 to advance.
Tomorrow he will join Buckeye Junior Peter Kobelt in the 64 player draw.
Kobelt earned an auto berth because of his preseason ranking.
Kobelt will face #10 seed Rossi of UKentucky, in a match slated to begin at 9 am et.
Diaz will face qualifier Shane Vinsant of Texas A & M at 12:30.
The main draw of doubles will also include Buckeye's Kobelt and Smith.

Vick transferred this summer, casualty of the 4 1/2 scholarship limit and decreased playing time.
Coach Tucker had inserted Nelson in the lineup early last year with some mixed results, but then Vick disappeared. I assumed he got jumped in the lineup through inner squad competitions.
My casual observation was that his game lacked a "weapon," his play had peaked and with the new guys on board his chances for making one of the top 6 singles positions were slim.

Re. Blaz, I also hope that Rola decides to return to OSU for the Spring season. Some more knowledgable than I think he is gone, but he is still listed on the official 2012-13 roster.
Rola "earned" @ $10k on the American and European ATP futures circuit this summer.
Europe has many clay court tournaments, and Rola seems to excel on the slow stuff. Four championships in 7 weeks against professional level competition. He has bumped his ranking in the ATP to under 400.
If he pocketed the cash winnings (exceeding his expenses) from those futures tournaments this summer, his career as a Buckeye is over.
Many amateurs choose to forfeit the winnings to keep their amateur status as has Rola to this point, (for his career could have collected over $26K).
If he returns Rola would be an anchor at the top of the lineup, could surpass Justin Kronauge for the all times career singles and doubles wins in the OSU record book, would be in a strong position to claim a NCAA single's championship and teamed with Kobelt would potentially make a strong run at the NCAA double's crown.
Yeah, I would love to see Rola back as well.:highfive:
