Game Thread Ohio State @ Indiana, 08/31/17 @ 8:00 ET (ESPN)

You know, I think I'm just gonna throw the first half of that game out the window and forget about it. The fuckery that always seems to take place when playing Indiana never seems to have any bearing on how the season actually plays out.

I dunno

that fuckery looked an awful lot like some other fuckery we have seen over the past couple years

also, looking at the recaps it wasn't just a bad half

it almost 3 full quarters. Paris Campbell didn't score the go ahead TD until under 5 minutes left in the 3rd quarter

No wonder this fucker was so stressful.

I for one am impressed... Kevin Wilson showed us what he's all about with the adjustments he made as the game went and like they stated they would do they did. Once the chunk plays came they found such a rythm. I haven't felt that satisfied with the play calls since probably the 14' season.

Against essentially the same defense last year JT goes for 85 yards passing. The same defense and missing Samuel and this year he goes for 300. This with at least 4 bad drops with 1 being a sure TD from 30+ yards out. Pumped for the offense especially with Weber coming back soon too. Great 1/2 punch.

Also no false starts, no holds and have up only 1 sack. MAD SHOUT OUT TO THE LINE. They and the offense go for 300 in passing and rushing each. That's balance.

Defense... dline is just gross but I have a big issue with the lack of adjustments early to limit their attack. They clearly were going to throw it to Cobbs essentially every damn play and they went after Sheffield hard. Sort of reminded me when we refused last year to help Arnette in man coverage against Paige from IU.

When Westbrook goes down and the team has no chance against our front then ELIMINATE their only weapon. Force Lagow to hold the ball longer to give our boys time to hit home.

I'm disappointed it took a while half and 300 yards passing of fade route after fade route to adjust. I could see and feel Wilson adjusting after the first quarter but man don't wait until the half defense coaches.

I will never understand why we don't double or triple someone to force the other team to find another way. Not many teams have a QB that can still make plays when their #1 option isn't available.

Luckily we will never see a team with that kind of skill and game plan again. PSU has the talent but they'll want to run Barkley which plays into our hands if you ask me.

Next week Mark Andrews is OUs only weapon so let's take that away and we will roll.

I will go back and watch in more detail, but:

1) The offensive line looks really improved...there were issues with the offense in general (addressed below), but I thought the OL did a damn good job overall. Pass protection looked good.
2) The play calling and tempo overall was underwhelming overall...felt no different than under Beck. Until I see something different, talent and depth won out tonight, not offensive scheme. But hey, it is game 1.
3) Dobbins is going to be a star and I put this at #3 because it is obvious to anyone who has eyes.
4) Love that we stuck with the guys that originally were the sources of frustration...Campbell and Dixon both redeemed themselves and made huge plays. I would like to chalk it up to initial jitters, I think both can be amazing here. But love that the staff kept with them.
5) Antonio Williams looks pretty damn good too...very glad he is a Buckeye.
6) DeMario McCall: I hope we hear he was rules out of the game for some reason because it was very disappointing not to see him out there. I am guessing he was held out for some reason because he dressed and would have usually played.
7) Our DL may not have that great of stats this year, but it is only because teams will get rid of the ball very quick. Lagow is a great QB in my eyes, yet he threw a crucial INT, probably should have had 2-3 more, fumbled the ball and had intentional grounding calls. IU was desperately trying to get the ball out quick and they executed well. But it was clear that the DL had an absolute field day out there...might not show up in the stats, but the DL was going nuts.
8) Speaking of the DL, how about Jashon Cornell? I thought he looked fantastic out there and got very little lip-service coming into the game. Really impressed by him and man is he a big boy now...think he is going to be a force for us this year.
9) DB's: I think we were in great position most of the night, but Lagow was putting the ball on the money and receivers were making plays. They threw a ton of high back-shoulder throws because they know their receivers could not consistently beat our DB's. That being said, I think Okudah or Wade should have went out on the tall receiver (#1), particularly near the redzone. Ward was in good position but was just not getting high enough. I think Ward, Sheffield and Arnette are going to be great this season. Just think Okudah/Wade could have been used tonight to stop certain things.
10) Speaking of DB's, not sure I even heard Webb's name...sometime that is a good thing. Fuller made a big play, but seems like he and Smith will rotate until someone makes a mark.
11) Special teams: Glad we were hitting our FG's, even though they were chippies. Chrisman looked great I thought, kid is a keeper.

- Overall: We won against a team that I think will end up being a pretty decent team...they might go all IU like they do every year, but being on the road at night, I walked away with a respect for their team. Lagow is a damn good QB and the guys he was throwing to executed very well...maybe this is your annual installment of insert B1G team here that gives OSU their best shot, but I would be surprised. Nonetheless, I am not worried about our team at all, but we will find out quickly on August 9th what we are made of.

Overall a good win against a feisty Indiana team on the road.

I was completely wrong about the DL. They played out of their minds. DBs weren't great but got better as the game went on and Lagow was taken out of his rhythm. Defense should be nasty after the backfield gets more experience. Good to see the LBs making some big plays as well.

Still concerned about the offense and its ability against elite opponents. Not shocking after 1 game into the season I know, but there were still too many issues leftover from last year. Run game should be great, especially with Webber coming back, but the passing game still needs a lot of work to become consistent. Campbell is a great athlete but has questionable hands. Dixon made a great catch and run but had a bad drop. Lots of potential, but no one WR that is a clear go-to in a tough game. They need a Robiskie or Sanzenbacher who might not have the flash, but will get the job done and is dependable. I did like that the offensive staff adjusted and had a better identity in the second half.

Not sure how to evaluate the team. Could see them beating every team on the schedule, but don't think they will. Also don't see them competing with Alabama, USC, or FSU currently. Thankfully it's only the 1st game and there's a lot of room for improvement after a 28 point win.

good breakdown. thanks.

in regards to point #9, 3 of the hoosiers' 4 leading receivers this game: 6'4", 6'4", and 6'5". i doubt we're going to face a corps quite like that again this season.

Slow start. Strong finish.
Star is born in JK
Indiana always plays us tuff
Great 2nd half adjustments
Punter did a great job
DL is incredible
Couple drops but good production from Campbell
Really good passing from JT. Had at least 3 drops. 300 yds
OL took over in the 2nd half.
Bring on OKLAHOMA

Ohio State has a problem at quarterback right now. Things improved but watch how open Dixon had to be before the throw on the TD. He lacks confidence and can't really take it vertical.

I don't know if this can be fixed, but Ohio State is going to need less hesitancy or they could lose 2 or more. Oklahoma looks like a tall ask right now. They showed some things tonight that I think they'd like to have kept to themselves.

It's an away game, opening the season against a conference foe at night. Defence was lights out in the second half. Two extra days to prepare.
