OSU notebook: Worthington can play, but he won't start

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Defensive tackle Doug Worthington's drunken-driving case is still pending in court, but he will be available to play Saturday against Youngstown State, Ohio State coach Jim Tressel said. "As far as Worthington goes, Doug will be suited up and ready to go," Tressel said yesterday. "Exactly when he'll get his car keys back (be sent into the game), I don't know that answer at this moment. But it won't be at the beginning."
Worthington pleaded not guilty to drunken driving after a traffic stop July 26 by university police, and the case was continued Monday in a preliminary hearing in Franklin Country Municipal Court. A trial date has not been set.

Youngstown State pushed by past success

WILLIAM D. LEWIS The (Youngstown) Vindicator
Coach Jon Heacock has a 50-31 record at Youngstown State since taking over the program in 2001.

The adage is that a coach doesn't want to be the coach who follows the legend. He wants to be the coach who follows the coach who follows the legend. That isn't the way it happened for Jon Heacock at Youngstown State. But he said he would not have it otherwise.
"I have always appreciated the fact that I got to follow Jim Tressel," he said. "Not that I have to follow him, but I get to follow him."
Tressel left Youngstown State for Ohio State in 2001 after coaching the Penguins to a record of 135-57-2 and four Division I-AA championships in 15 years.

ESPN - Youngstown State Penguins vs. Ohio State Buckeyes Preview, August 30 2008 - NCAA College Football
Youngstown St.-Ohio St. Preview

Jim Tressel has seen Ohio State get blown out in the last two national championship games after guiding his team to back-to-back Big Ten titles.

Undeterred, Tressel and the Buckeyes hope to start on the road toward a third straight championship game -- and a better finish -- when they take on a school that's very familiar with national titles.

The No. 2 Buckeyes kick off their season Saturday at home against Youngstown State, the program Tressel guided to four Division I-AA championships before moving to Columbus.

Tressel was at Youngstown State from 1986-2000, and the Penguins were Division I-AA's dominant program of the 1990s, participating in six national championship games.

Skull Session

Not sure if the right place. Taking my 8 year old to his first game Saturday and want to take in the Skull Session (1st time for me). What time should we get to St John Arena since it is the season opener? Thanks.

I'd say at least an hour early, probably two to be safe.

Don't they usually arrive 2 hrs before the game?

Yes sir.

Another addition to Ohio State's pantheon of pomp and circumstance was getting the team involved in the pre-game "Skull Session". The warm-up routine of the Ohio State University Marching Band takes place in St. John Arena, right across the street from Ohio Stadium, two hours before kickoff of home games.

I meant an hour or two before the skull session started, from my experience it fills up fast and there usually aren't any seats left quite a bit before it starts.

I'm curious to know why you think there are usually lots of seats MD?
