Game Thread Ohio State 43, Youngstown St. 0 (Aug. 30)

That piston formation is sick. Mo Wells did pretty well back there, but another guy we could put in there is Flash. Pryor is just sick. The guy is composed, loose, has a quick release, and run like Vince Young. If we don't have Beanie for SC, there are a number of ways we can compensate the running game with Pryor.

Surprised K. Wells and Bino didn't play. Are they dinged up?

Sabino played but I have no idea what happened with Keith Wells or Nathan Williams for that matter. My thoughts:

We looked pretty darn good for the first game of the season. The offense looks shaky at times, and I really think we need Beanie to make the offense run consistently. Pryor, Saine, MoWells, Boom, etc. are nice changes of pace and will make some big contributions this year, but we need Beanie to be national title contenders. Posey looked really, really good and he is going to be a big contributor imo. I like what Hartline and Robiskie bring to the table, but I just see them as primarily possession receivers. I thought they should have been getting better seperation from YSU defenders. I was hoping to see more of Flash today. I saw Shugarts beating the tar out of defenders and Brew looked good. Adams I actually thought struggled early on but picked it up later in the game. The starting OL looked pretty awesome and will open up some holes for whoever is running the rock. Oh and almost forgot...Pryor looked great. He made good decisions, threw some nice strikes, looked very elusive, and he is going to be a great one. I liked Bauserman's limited play as well.

The defense was spectacular. Yes, YSU wasn't very good, but I was extremely impressed by the way we are flying to the ball. At DE, I thought Gibson looked really quick and as advertised. Rose is going to be a really solid player and Lawrence Wilson looked really tough. At DT, Abdallah really impressed me...I think he has improved vastly and did a great job on the interior. I really liked our DT play...they plugged the inside gaps and allowed our LB's to make plays, which is what we need. Freeman was spectacular and looks primed for a great year. Lil Animal was a beast as usual. Homan looked full go out there and showed great closing speed. Ty Moeller was flying around and making some great plays...very impressed. Jermale Hines made a nice hit on the first drive and never looked back...he is really going to help us out in the run defense this year. Russel made some nice plays, and the corners obviously did well in coverage.

The special teams certainly look improved. Ray Small showed some flash on the punt return, the kickers are amazing, and our kick coverage is stellar. Overall, I think we look like a national championship caliber team, but it is early, Beanie needs to stay healthy, and I think we are a couple weeks away from being able to really say.

I don't believe we blitzed at all, and YSU STILL didn't have enough time to make one downfield throw.

Incredible.

Peed myself when Beanie went down. This is hauntingly reminiscent of Friday Night Lights (Of course, Boobie was an asshole, and Beanie is a saint). I really hope it's not turf toe. Maybe just a twist or something...

my impressions....

On offense I think all the jumbling of the lineups are to blame for not sticking it in the endzone a couple more times. I thought we looked kind of lethargic to start the game on offense although we did score, people just seemed to be in slow motion at first I thought. Beanie had a couple nice runs, and forget playing him against OU if he's capable (which I doubt he will) I kept repeating "Oh my God" when beanie was on the carpet. Pryor really is going to be awesome though with what he brings to the table. He's so calm in the pocket that I thought he needs to move his feet a little more than he was because he literally would stand still (thats just nitpicking though). Posey, MoW, and the tightends I thought looked rather impressive. My thoughts regaurding Saine are still that he looks awkaward as a runner for some reason? I also thought Ray Small was great today, and thats the type of play we need out of him. I just don't think Hartline nor Robo are the type of gamebreaker we need on offense. While both are very solid we need someone like Posey to step up and become that home run threat out wide. If we can combine a homerun threat at reciever, runningback, and QB this offense will be fun to watch. With beanie possibly being out this week i'd look for Pryor to be in running more than usual.

On defense well what can you really say? we held them to 70 yards and 0 points. The first team defense may have given up 1 first down due to penalty but other than that was great. I still think the defensive line pressure was not where it needs to be especially the interior STILL. It was nice to see Robert Rose in there, and I tell you who stood out today was Freeman/Moeller. Both of those guys did great today. As expected the avoided Jenkins completely and chikwa really did a nice job as well. Hopefully we can get some people back in the line up for the USC game because USC looks damn impressive right now (Wow, how physical are they?)

Great win, and probably better than most expected minus beanie. Go bucks, and lets all root on the Illini

we blitzed. but rarely. I bet it was < 1/2 a dozen times

And when we did, Marcus Freeman hurt somebody.

Sometimes it was on a run, sometimes he hit the QB right after the release; but it was very clear the Penguins were lucky we played vanilla 90% of the time

Beanie injured during Buckeyes' rout
X-rays 'negative,' Tressel says

Chris "Beanie" Wells heads for the end zone in the first quarter today in Ohio Stadium.

As expected, second-ranked Ohio State opened with a domineering, 43-0 win over in-state little brother Youngstown State today, but then there was the unexpected: an injury suffered by Heisman Trophy candidate Chris "Beanie" Wells. It came in the third quarter, just as Wells -- already over 100 yards rushing in the game -- seemed ready to score his second touchdown. Instead, after taking a handoff from Todd Boeckman, Wells dropped the ball, fell to the ground and grabbed his right foot with one hand while pulling off his helmet with the other.
In the postgame press conference, OSU coach Jim Tressel said that X-rays were negative in terms of finding a broken bone. But Wells was taken to the hospital after the game for further evaluation of what insiders said was a sprain of the top of the foot. The insiders would not speculate on the severity.
Kicker Ryan Pretorius said he saw Wells in the training room before he left.
"I spoke to Beanie, and he said it was just his big toe, and he said he's going to be fine," Pretorius said.

Transcript of Jim Tressel's postgame news conference

COACH TRESSEL: Those three flights of stairs are tiring. It was a good day for us in that I thought our guys came out and they were business-like as to what they wanted to do and the issue wasn't Youngstown State, it was what can Ohio State do to execute, to get better. I thought obviously when your defense pitches a shutout and creates that type of field position all day long, it was good to see the special teams very solid. Ryan Pretorius really hit the ball well. And then Aaron Pettrey's field goal, that would have been good from about 60 some, I think. And the kickoffs and kickoff coverage was solid. Lots of great film for us to study. It was our first opportunity to have the new clock management and it will be interesting to see if the numbers of plays and those types of things are similar to what we've had in the past, but I thought our guys stayed true to cause through the ball game and that's what they've done through the entire preseason because of the leadership of these guys, and I think we know we have a long way to go and our guys enjoy working.

What the Buckeyes had to say

Saturday, August 30, 2008 4:56 PM

Todd Boeckman, quarterback On the offensive depth
"It's always nice to have so many options. We have a lot of great wide receivers and (running) backs. It's a great luxury to have."
On what he needs to work on
"There were a few times when I wasn't composed and my feet were off balance. Once the game went along, I was able to get my rhythm and stay composed."

What the Penguins had to say

Saturday, August 30, 2008 4:20 PM

From the Ohio State athletics communications office

Jon Heacock, head coach On the team's offensive play
"You have to give most of the credit to the other side of the ball. This is one heck of a team that has a lot of great talent. I've gained more respect for the Ohio State defense. On our side of the ball, we would have like to see more first downs. We had a lot of dropped balls that could have been big plays for us. Opportunities for big plays are hard to come by against their defense so it was disappointing we couldn't convert. The Ohio State defense is pretty good."

I agree with everyone here that Boeckman didn't look his sharpest and we also need to work a bit more on our red zone offense. I would also like to see OSU get some take aways. I know a few starters are out and that may be the problem, but not even one vs a D1aa team is a bit suprising.

All and all it was a great game. Gave some quality time to the backups. Next game we need to keep the starters in a bit longer than the third drive. Good job Bucks. A-

The first thing I thought when he grabbed his foot was "planter fascia", and that can be a very serious injury. Feel a little better about it now that Beanie and JT seem to feel beter about it, so we'll have to see.

Overall, the defense was really flying to the ball. I can't believe they tried to run a reverse on us. The second-stringers looked just as good as the first unit. Dominant. Fast.
Too bad Shaun Lane missed his chance.

On offense, Mo Wells looked very good. Saine still needs to make cuts at full speed, instead of coming to a stop to change directions.

Hope Robo's shoulder is not too bad. That can nag him all year.
Posey looks awesome for a true frosh. Will have a great career.

yeah I noticed Saine gets the ball running full speed but then he will hit the breaks really quick once he has the ball...A couple players you didn't hear much out of today were Russel, Hines, and Jenkins but thats not necessarily a bad thing I suppose.

Hines forced a fumble, and played well I think! Malcolm was his normal unbeatable self!
