Buckeyes win, but Wells injured
X-rays negative on foot for Heisman hopeful
By George M. Thomas
Beacon Journal sports writer

POSTED: 07:07 p.m. EDT, Aug 30, 2008

COLUMBUS:Call it the curse of the Penguins.
Ohio State (1-0) put the Youngstown State Penguins (0-1) on ice in a 43-0 today at Ohio Stadium in a victory.
It's the second time in two seasons, though, that a key member of the Buckeyes and an Akron native was injured against Youngstown State.
Last year defensive end Lawrence Wilson went down with a broken leg. Heisman Trophy candidate Chris ''Beanie'' Wells suffered what looked to be a serious injury today.
He collapsed to the turf as he planted his foot on a handoff at 7:14 of the third quarter. He fumbled the ball but was touched by no one.
Wells left the field with help from his teammates and was eventually carted into the locker room. X-rays were performed, and results were negative.

Buckeyes win and worry

COLUMBUS - Ohio State's football players don't have to think about going to class for three more weeks, but they got an outside-the-classroom lesson about Sir Isaac Newton's principle that for every action there is a reaction during a 43-0 win over Youngstown State on Saturday.
For example ...
Action: Jumping out to a 26-0 halftime lead and dominating YSU. Reaction: Loud cheering.
Action: Inserting much-hyped and much-anticipated freshman quarterback Terrelle Pryor into the game for his first college action late in the first quarter. Reaction: Loud cheering.
Action: Watching Heisman Trophy candidate, tailback Chris Wells, go down with a scary looking injury in the third quarter. Reaction: Silence in Ohio Stadium. Absolute silence.

Grading the Bucks vs. the Penguins

by Bill Lubinger Saturday August 30, 2008, 8:09 PM

Marvin Fong/The Plain Dealer
Almost lost in the hoopla over Terrelle Pryor's debut and Beanie Wells' foot injury was the sterling work of Marcus Freeman (1, tackling YSU's Ferlando Williams) and the Buckeyes defense, which allowed just 74 yards to the Penguins on Saturday.

QB Boeckman: Grade A
With all eyes primed for the first Terrelle Pryor sighting, senior starter Todd Boeckman looked poised and confident, tossing a 47-yard pass to Brian Hartline on the team's second series, a 31-yard touchdown to Brian Robiskie just before the half, and a 25-yard TD to promising freshman Devier Posey -- who caught four passes for 47 yards -- for a 33-0 lead late in the third quarter. Boeckman finished 14-of-19 for 187 yards and two scores.

OSU defense: Grade A
A strong showing was expected, but this was utter domination. "You've got to be extremely happy any time you get a shutout, no matter who it is," said senior linebacker James Laurinaitis. The Buckeyes allowed just five first downs and 74 total yards, including minus-11 yards on the ground in 21 attempts. Youngstown recorded just one first down and 28 total yards in the first half, mainly against Ohio State's first line.

On the clock: The day at Ohio Stadium

by Doug Lesmerises Saturday August 30, 2008, 7:53 PM

Marvin Fong/The Plain DealerWith a blazing 43-yard touchdown run to start the game, Beanie Wells gave Buckeyes fans a chance to let loose in celebration of a new football season Saturday afternoon. Youngstown State's Nick Gooden is the unlucky Penguin in Wells' wake.

A day at Ohio Stadium by the minutes:
9 a.m. -- The Alumni Band lines up outside Ohio Stadium for box lunches. Then again, they started warming up at 6.
10:25 -- At least one fan is offering upper-deck tickets for face value at $62. But a scalper still wants $200 each for the lower bowl.
11:38 -- Malcolm Jenkins, James Laurinaitis and Beanie Wells linger near midfield after the Buckeyes finish their pregame scrum. They slap hands and offer hugs to each other before following their teammates off the field, part of their pre-game tradition that started last year.
"We always do it to make sure we're all on the same page," Jenkins said. "We know that we're the playmakers of the team and we always remind ourselves it's time to go, and we have to step up and play well for our team."

Ohio State-Youngstown State: What I'll remember

by Staff reports Saturday August 30, 2008, 6:38 PM

Marvin Fong/The Plain DealerOSU receiver Devier Posey (8) dives for a third quarter touchdown past the grasp of Youngstown State's Andre Elliot (2) Saturday afternoon at Ohio Stadium.

Doug Lesmerises: With what Ohio State hopes is a third straight run to the national title game barely underway, the future took the field Saturday.
With 6:52 left in the first quarter, it was about far more than just freshman quarterback Terrelle Pryor officially lining up as a Buckeye for the first time. On the second-team offense, he was joined by receivers DeVier Posey and Lamaar Thomas, tackles Mike Adams and J.B Shugarts and center Michael Brewster. This came before the foot injury to Beanie Wells brought the present into question -- and the future looked sharp and entertaining.
"We didn't even know we were out there together," Posey said. "I knew Terrelle was calling the plays, then I saw Lamaar, and later I saw Brewster and those guys were in, too. When we got back to the sideline, we were like, 'Man, we did pretty good together.'"

We've already establish a "problem" one half into the season?

I know it was a long offseason, but c'mon pokey...

I could have chose my words better. But I still think it is a valid concern that Robiskie and Hartline didn't seem to be able to get separation from the YSU defenders. It puts a premium on Boeckman's accuracy.

I am gonna get hammered for this......but oh well.

Thought everything looked good overall today, defense was ridiculous (of course it was against YSU), Pryor is amazing.

O-line looked good on the run, but bad against the pass rush. Now of course that could have something to do with all the switching in and out of linemen, but they were getting beat around the ends bad (and again, it was against YSU).

Running game looked good. Saine seems scared for some reason, and missed large gaps in the line on several occassions.

Now all this can be chalked up to alot of things, including it being the first game, but there is one thing that troubles me:

I dont have any faith in TB, whether it be beating USC, winning an NC game, etc. He is far too inconsistent, has no mobility, and throws far too many dangerous passes (and yet again, this is against YSU). I watched most of the SC game, and I saw a different caliber team. Now this could be my last post on BP because I am sure someone will wanna ban me for all this, but I am just callin it like I see it.

Im sure youll be just fine.....

I definitely see what youre talking about, but I think what you saw today was a fairly simple game plan. TB thought he could make the throws, and for the most part he did. USC look awesome, but I dont think Virginia was any good. Do I think we could look better if we didnt put in all of our freshmen at once on the third drive....yes. But its not about looking better, its about whats best for the team, and getting these guys live reps is incredible valuable!
