Game Thread Ohio State 33, Washington 14 (Final)

This article at 4malemute.com thinks the huskies will edge out a win by catching the Bucks flatfooted. This while giving us a huge edge in talent but a good article anyway.

Prediction:
A hungry Washington team will catch Ohio State flatfooted and over-confident, basking in the glory of two easy opening victories and in what could have been a national championship in 2006. Washington?s speedy front seven will test the running ability of the Buckeyes? big, lumbering quarterbacks.
This is the time for emerging star quarterback Montlake Jake to shine and could be one of the big upsets of 2007. The poet in me says that Willingham will hand Tressel a brilliant scarlet vest?on a gray overcast tray...amidst the fury of a loud, raucous fray.
Washington 23, Ohio State 21

This article bemoans the recruiting and possible effects on the HUsky program.
Link.

Washington has lost 26 seniors, mostly out of its 2002 and 2003 classes, classes that scout.com ranked 23rd and 18th in the nation, respectively.
It is our contention that most of those holes left by graduation last season have not been adequately filled and that rather than Washington's football fortunes being on the upswing, as the media claim, we believe their claim is so much drivel. (Photo: Stanley Daniels).
Washington's last four recruiting classes (2004, 2005, 2006, and 2007) were ranked 22nd, 55th, 35th, and 29th, respectively. Two four-star recruits out of the 2004 class never played a down -- Matt Tuiasosopo and Keauntea Bankhead ? their loss certainly worsening its relatively high ranking if computed again. And the same is true for the 2007 class, where WRs Anthony Boyles and Devin Aguilar have apparently been lost to non-qualifying SAT scores.

From the same site here's a link to Nostradamus predicting a win in 2003. If the current article isn't enough to know for sure, a perusal of the archives leaves no doubt this guy knows 2 things; jack and shit.

Seems typical of their fanbase from the summer of '03 over at BN, only somewhat less arrogant. Their small but quick players will give our big lumbering oafs fits on the way to a victory because of some shit that happened 50 years ago yadda, yadda yadda.

The runners UW's front seven need to worry about won't be wearing number in the teens. And they'd better get some sort of pressure on the QB lest the UW fans grow tired of hearing Robiskie's and Hartline's name being called by the PA announcer.

Not to mention Boeckman and Henton were both faster than "slow lumbering" Troy Smith last year......

Good Morning all, I have yet to look at the UW team with any scrutiny, but it would seem that we on this board are really not giving them much respect...or much of a chance at all. I hope that is right due to the circumstances behind my getting the shaft on tickets for this game in particular.

OT: A good buddie is an alum there and lives literally minutes (by foot) from the stadium. He had FOUR tickets and gave them to some tool at his office because he was to be in Boston for that weekend. Now, he swears that he thought I was scheduled to be there (Boston) that weekend as well but never called to confirm. Should I kill him or just beat him seriously over the head!! Oh well.

This won't help the Huskies' chances. He should be back to play against tOSU, but he'll have missed a lot of practice time.

Russo breaks finger, will miss opener
Washington wide receiver started 12 games last year

SEATTLE (AP) -- Washington receiver Anthony Russo will likely miss the season opener at Syracuse after breaking the pinkie finger on his right hand.

The senior is set to have surgery Friday, when the Huskies begin two-a-day practices.

"It's probably going to be four weeks," Russo said Wednesday, a day after getting his finger caught in the artificial turf at Husky Stadium while trying to catch a low pass.

He said "there's a small chance" he could be back in time for the Syracuse game on Aug. 31.

Russo, was second on the team with 32 catches while starting all 12 games last season. Corey Williams, a fifth-year senior with 31 career catches, moves up the depth chart to replace Russo.

Cont'd ...

Thanks to the eastern mafia, the Buckeyes can play a soft out-of-conference schedule with impunity and not pay for it in the national rankings, as a Pac-10 team would. So, each year they seem to cruise along, whether they are loaded or booting up. Speaking of love affairs, the ESPN network covered the Big Ten?s football media day on July 31.

What a crock of shit! Patsy OOC schedule? Not lately. Maybe this season yes, but we only played the eventual NC two seasons ago and rematched em last season. Whiners!!

I'm getting more fired up by the minute! We do have a bit of a soft schedule with multiple MAC teams and the D I-AA Ytown boys but Washington would lose at least one of those games in my opinion. I posted in this thread way back in April regarding their RS Frosh QB, Locker. He's probably the best player on the team now as I look at it. I will reiterate the fact that the Bucks will not allow a greenhorn QB with less than stellar surrounding cast to upset this team. The defense is way too good and UW has no chance of stopping the RB trio of Wells/Wells/Saine. I don't usually come out and make brash predictions about our opponents, but this game is rubbing me the wrong way. The way our boys came into camp looking fit and lit....... this will be a blowout. 41-10.

One can only hope that this team plays with a chip on it's shoulder all season.
I'm sure the media will give them plenty of bulletin board material about being over rated and playing a weak schedule.
The cards have been stacked against us this year, boys.

Look them over with some scrutiny and you'll see why.

Link to their team NCAA rankings from '06. In a nutshell, there were 119 teams so anything 60th or worse is bottom half of all NCAA football right?
  • Well they were in the top half of the nation in exactly 3 categories and bottom half in the other 14. The 3 they were above average in sacks, TFL's and sacks allowed.
  • Their supposed stoutness against the run is borne from the college stat fluke that subtracts sack yardage from the rushing total. Opponents averaged a very healthy 4.76 ypc and 166 per game in gross rushing yds. Thats in the Pac 10 remember.
  • They gave up a whopping 7.43 yds per attempt in the passing game
  • Their offense averaged 22 ppg and only broke 30 twice, once vs San Jose St and again vs WSU, this is including 2 OT games where they scored a combined 47 points.
  • They are breaking in a new QB
When you are coming off a season in which you were 85th in scoring defense and 76th in scoring offense I understand there is a strong chance the team will be better. However, they were so bad a year ago I just don't see how they can make up that kind of gap. This is, on paper at least, a very bad team.

I started off thinking close game because of it being a west coast road game, new QB etc. The more I looked into it the more I'll be shocked if we don't roll them. This is the kind of team we could line up in I formation, tell them the hole number and snap count and run it right down their throat.

I won't even get into the mismatch our D vs their O is. They won't be able to run and that will make a rookie QB the focus of a one dimensional offense. Thats just a recipie for disaster for any team we've played under the JT regime.

OBTW they are breaking in a new punter, kicker and averaged giving up over 15 yds per punt return in '06. So it looks as though special teams might not carry the day for them.

All in all its going to take a lot of help from OSU for UW to hang in this one. Close game at the half then blowout at best imo.
