Game Thread Ohio State 3, Southern Cal 35 (Sept. 13)

OSU just wasn't bringing the pressure and it wasn't a question of their D Line not getting a push. They were often coming with 2-3 guys on third down which you just can't do against a QB who can actually find the open man. Freeman and Laurainitis were also underused, in my opinion. Those guys are AA--you need to utilize their speed at the LB spot to cause some havoc.
Did you even watch the game? We were coming after Sanchez and getting stuffed the entire first half. Freeman and Laurinaitis were blitzing and getting there just after the ball was thrown. Seriously, did you watch the game?

The D-line wasn't great, but the biggest problems were not on that side of the ball in this game or the last 2 NC's.

LOL at "Did you even watch the game?"

I have the same reaction to the numerous 'why didn't we blitz' headscratchers. They did, and failed.

About as strange as those wishing we'd be more aggressive. They tried about everything possible, but when you are badly beaten up front, the rest rarely matters.

We beat Texas in 06' without Vince Young and that team ended up with like 4 loses or something.

Winning the big ten is awesome I hope you don't think I think its not a privelage anymore or something like that. The bottom line is the big ten is not where it needs to be right now and no one can deny that. There's not another team in the conference that can even come close on a national level as an OSU. Every year we shoot for the Big Ten champs, and then National Champs if we have the chance. After seeing us kind of breeze past everyone for the past 3 years its getting frustrating how the big ten does not prepare us for teams that nationally are GREAT teams. We beat teams on talent alone in the big ten and when we go outside of our conference against teams like us we struggle. A lot has been said here tonight so i'm gonna turn in an think a bit more but I think I'm starting to get frustrated at the WHOLE conference. No one is preparing us for what we're seeing after the big ten season, and while the coaches should be able to fix this. You can't simulate what the other elite programs bring to the table in practice someone else in the big ten needs to step up and be elite as well.

We are still Elite and I believe that 100 percent, but we can't be the long dog here in the big ten.

This just gets more frustrating the more I think about it, so I promise I'm going to bed after this post. Having a weakness itself doesn't kill you, but refusing to see it and adopt to it when it is clear as the sky sure does. It truly worries me to know that with or without Beanie, we were committed to this plan that tried to achieve an unnatural and artificial balance of run and pass and one that abandoned the run as soon as we fell behind. We will still be able to win the big ten, but right now, we are not a top five program.

Earlier this week when I heard Beanie was out.........I immediatley told a couple friends, "Ok, I give USC 28 points". They looked at me like I was crazy. There are buckeye fans who are just sick with buckeye everything, and there are buckeye fans who are realists. I knew we would take a thumping tonight. Because I knew that, I am not feeling near as bad as half the people on this board, or any board. SC should be playing in the NFL, where they are actually allowed to pay players

Agreed bro. I didn't want to say it, but I had USC by 24 points. I knew in reality we were probably going to get nailed, but I honestly thought we had a chance if we played our best...and if they played sub-par or near their worst.

In retrospect and after talking to some friends, we could have certainly played better than we did. I don't think it would have mattered in terms of the score, but at least there could have been more positives. Terrelle Pryor, as someone else said, seemed to be our one positive to take away. Penn State and Wisconsin are going to be real tests for us in the Big 10. As for Beanie...sit him next week. If there is any worry about lingering injuries this week, in the biggest game of the year, no need to risk it against Troy State. Even if Beanie breaks 2,000 off he likely won't win the Heisman and he will have had been out too long anyways. Let him get healthy...we'll need him later in the year, and especially next year.

The most negative thing I really have to say about this game was the mental mistakes. I just hate seeing them from the seniors, especially at critical points. When a team is better than you, like USC obviously was, you can't make stupid mistakes. Even though we would probably have been beaten regardless, you still want to know your leadership executed to the best of their abilities and played like upper classmen (since a lot of our starters are). Honestly, we looked worse than in the last 2 NC games just because it was like a broken record...it was "Oh no, not again." Unfortunately, even with the talent we have, it seems there is something just holding us back from taking that next step. Granted USC had more talent, there is just a seemingly built-in tendancy to self implode. Hopefully we can shake that by the end of the year and the seniors can build a new identity because they are oustanding people regardless of their play, and really came back with a mission. Though we won't win a NC game, there is still a lot at stake.

Edit: Tresselbeliever...we are on the same page. I forgot to mention the coaching disappointed me too. It seems JT was predictable and when he went to something unexpected, it was an option with Boeckman? I won't say a word about Boeckman but I will say that Pryor was doing a terrific job out there. He seemed calm and the offense honestly seemed more in sync with him in there. The play calling seemed to me another self imploding tendancy that made me say "Oh no, here we go again." Another was having Pryor run an empty set draw on the 5 yard line. Everyone and their mother knew that was coming...throw a screen, roll him out, something else. Ok, I'm done.

Michgan/OSU both got slaughtered after that game of the century. If ya just go back and check it out our wins all the sudden just aren't the same anymore. We lost to Texas (while they were mighty good though) when they were Elite, and we beat them when they didn't have VY. Last time we beat an ELITE and nationally respectable team was in the 02' championship game in my opinion. K-state upset Oklahoma to meet us in the fiesta bowl so thats not an option really. ND? they didn't have a defense, and then we lost two straight NCG's... Nc State? No.

I'd say we can hang out hat on Michigan, and the other games are good wins but not the kind of wins we need if we want to continue to be viewed as a National Champion contender. We won't be considered if we don't play some of the better teams closer.

Our defenses lack of turnovers, fire, push, and nastiness concerns me for sure. And like it was said a page or two back this team is VETERAN we shouldn't have to roll up our sleaves and get to work like Tressel said tonight after our loss. Next week will be ugly to start I think and it will get better as the game goes.

OSU-31 Troy-10
I see your point, but your expectations are incredibly inflated. If you had to pick the 5 best programs since 2000 who would you go with? I would put USC, LSU, tOSU, Texas and Oklahoma. Of those teams only 1 has 2 national championships...one has 1.5 and the rest have 1. Every one of those teams has lost at least one WTF? game in a year they were good, or even Elite (see USC last year).

I'm not happy with the way the game was played, but I see more of a problem with the O-line than with the defense. Malcolm Jenkins played with fire and nastiness tonight, and so did several others. They were playing a great team and getting zero help from the offense, so the result wasn't shocking. I only put 21 points on the defense (7 directly to the offense and at least 7 more indirectly), and if you had told me Friday the Bucks D would only give up 21 to USC I would have been very happy about it.

The Big 10 couldn't have prepared us for this game since we haven't opened the Big 10 season. Also, USC plays in the Pac-10 so they aren't exactly getting the week to week test you're talking about.

I would say we're the long dong rather than the long dog...maybe you meant lone dog...I still like long dong better though. If that sounded gay I blame Thump.

We are on the same page for the most part, but since you seem to agree that this game plan is similar to those in the past, and since we did badly in the past with this game plan, like the game against LSU, why do you think Beanie would have made any difference on the score? That's what truly worries me. This offensive philosophy is like a blackhole for talent, and it truly doesn't matter who's back there.
