Game Thread Ohio State 3, Southern Cal 35 (Sept. 13)

We're 3-2 since '02. 4-2 since the start of the BCS.

Problem is, the Big-10 is 8-9 in all BCS games, while the SEC is 11-4.

The SEC's record of 4-0 in BCS Championship Games (and the 11-4 deal)gives us a pass with many voters. While the value of that stat may be argued, and augmented with the various scoreboard wins by the Big-10 over SEC teams and other power conferences, that Conference BCS stat is what it is, and it is the reason for some of the SEC love fest/Big-10 bashing.

4-2 is damn good considering the fact the '07 Buck squad was overachieving in being there. That is over now. It is put up or shut up time. Or, more accurately, put up or hear the Big-10 and Tress dogged by ESPN for years.

I am convinced that the only way to win this game offensively is to have a minimalist philosophy: getting ten yards on every three set of downs, with the fourth as an option if needed. Knowing that Tressel will go for some fourth downs inside the SC 35 when he feels the need, there is no reason why we can not convert a 3rd and 4 on two sets of downs with Beanie in the backfield. This means no empty backfields on that third down when you know you are going for it on fourth down.

With this minimalist philosophy in mind, I wonder if Pryor should not play a bigger role. Get him some opportunities, if only for two or three yards a pop. No offense to Todd, but SC's forte is to eat immobile pocket passers alive. And no offense to our OL, Todd will get eaten alive if we run the same drop back passes we normally run. Think Krenzel-Clarett here. Think Williams-Mendenhall. The former is the combination that brought us our only national championship since '68. The latter is one that brought us to a hopeless defeat on senior day. It works.

I also hear a lot about how we need to pressure Sanchez with our ends. Not that it's incorrect, but the best way to pressure Sanchez is to eat up the clock, thus forcing SC's high-powered offense into a battle against time. One thing that I've learned over the years by watching football is that the more highly the team thinks of itself, the more impatient it gets in close games, especially against opponents that it overlooked. Dorsey's interceptions/fumble happened consecutively for a reason.

Defensively Marcus Freeman needs to have a huge game. Sanchez is going to roll out and dump it off to TEs, RBs or FBs. Freeman needs to have a hand in his face when he does that. I'm confident that Wilson and Gholston can get enough pressure from the outside, and that team speed will limit SC's playmakers to take it to the outside. The thing that concerns me the most are the safeties, because SC will attack the middle of the field with those big WRs. They got to be assignment sound and get some take aways.

So basically, if we stick to the basics and stay assignment sound, we should be fine. 28-24 TOSU.

As a USC fan, I'm not worried about Boeckman or Beanie- Boeckman is an above average pocket passer but does not make good decisions under pressure, and Beanie is a great back but our LB's will do a good job limiting him.

The only way you should not be worrying about Beanie is if he is not on the field or can't play. He is mentioned as a Heisman candidate for a reason. The kid is special, he can carry the offense, even when the D knows he is coming. Now if our o-line doesn't show up then its moot but I would not worry about Pryor before Beanie.

I agree Gator....I was just posting in response to KurtSexington saying we needed to win BCS games to get respect. I'd say if you asked 100, non-Big-10 college football fans what OSU career BCS game record was, 95% would come to a sub .500 record.

We've lost our last 2 NC games, which is obviously the most exposure a program can receive. It has really hurt OSU's reputation across the country. I had a fantastic training session last week with multiple people from Orange County. There opinion wasn't very high of Buckeye football.

The SEC's championship game performances speak for themselves. First team with 2 NC's and 2 additional teams with 1. Most of any conference.

I don't disagree the SEC is the best conference, I just like to point out that the Big 10 has a better head-to-head record in bowl games since the BCS. It shuts a lot of uninformed people up real quick.

Don't know about that Bill....

...it's real hard to shut up uninformed people.

I just bet a half mil vbucks on tOSU, so we'll see which group I'm in. :p

Monday night football, live from Oakland...

(cut from commercial in 3...2...1...)

Mike Greenberg: "Oh what a game Saturday night on ABC, a collision at the Coliseum. It's Jim Tressel's #5 Ohio State Buckeyes against Pete Carroll's USC Trojans. It's Saturday night football presented by southwest airlines on ABC Saturday night Primetime at 8 o'clock eastern time."

Mike Golic: "Think that one's gonna shape, uh, the landscape a little bit in college football?"

Mike Ditka: "That could be a Mini-Cooper running into a locomotive..."

All 3: "HAHAHAHAHA"

Mike Greenberg: "We shall see...."

You sure that wasn't Greenberg who said Mini-Cooper/Locomotive.

I'm pretty sure, uninformed radio host, Mike Greenbeerg said it.
