Game Thread Ohio State 3, Southern Cal 35 (Sept. 13)

Believe you me, I'm quite aware of the vitriol surrounding OSU's performance in the last two year's Bowl Games.
Last year after OSU lost a second consecutive BCS Title game to a SEC opponent, I told one of my good friends that winning the Rose Bowl was better for a program than losing the NC game. He disagreed, but after several months of disrespect for the Bucks, he came back and said he probably agreed.
As you mentioned, a loss to USC would mean that you would have to wait until a Bowl game to silence the haters which, should OSU lose to USC, I think is exactly what will happen. The problem I see is that most Buckeye fans just do not want to wait that long to shut up the rest of the country and show that yes, they are a power team that can hang with the big boys. My point was simply that should OSU lose to SC, the season isnt over but the Bucks will need to bide their time before really making their statement and shutting up the criticis, most likely in a major BCS Bowl game.

Absolutely. I and many other Buckeye fans would have rather played in the Rose Bowl last year. The 07 team was never expected to be a NC contender. Losing to an SEC team just made everything more ridiculous. OSU gets no respect. Zero. Like I said, ND fans think they can talk shit about us. Last year, their coach had more chins than wins. Luckily, the efforts of posters like shetuck make this board a safe haven against the Buckeye haters of the world. But, anywhere else you go, you'd think we'd never won a game. You're absolutely right that a loss to USC would not completely derail the season, but we just want a reprieve from all the idiocy. Beating USC gives us the best and most immediate chance to accomplish that.

+1

We had so many close calls in our 14-0 season that I've become a bit numb to the inane chatter. I remember before that run how much of an underdog we were, and how anemic our offense was. Somehow we managed to pull out a W even in the most visually unappealing ways, and it never bothered me one bit. We are truly underdogs again, and I won't buy into the hype. If tOSU can come out lights out, its anyone's ballgame.

Buckeyes and Trojans won't disappoint

Posted: September 8, 2008

Five reasons why Ohio State-USC will live up to the hype.
1. Ohio State is desperate: This is a manhood game, plain and simple. The last two times we've seen the Buckeyes in big games, it was utterly embarrassing. It wasn't so much the score as it was them coming completely unhinged mentally -- something so out of character for Jim Tressel-coached teams. Every player who has been through those emasculating losses in the last two BCS title games knows this is a statement game. Let's see if they respond.
2. The matchups: It's obvious now that Ohio State has problems with teams that run the spread option. USC does not run it, and the Trojans' pro-style offensive scheme plays into the Buckeyes' strength: athletic bruisers in the front seven and cornerbacks who can get physical with receivers. None of the USC receivers will run away from coverage, which will allow CBs Malcolm Jenkins and Chimdi Chekwa to jam at the line of scrimmage and disrupt the Trojans' timing-based passing game.
3. The next USC Heisman Trophy winner. Mark Sanchez is the most physically gifted of all Pete Carroll's quarterbacks at USC, and that's saying plenty. He has it all: big arm, accuracy, mobility. And his teammates love him. "The biggest goofball on the team," says USC defensive tackle Fili Maola. The biggest star, too.
4. USC when it matters. These aren't the games that sidetrack what is annually the nation's most talented team. When healthy, USC owns these games. And this Trojans team hasn't been this healthy in two years. It's the Stanfords and Oregon States that give the Trojans fits -- games in which USC is expected to roll, but they sleepwalk until it's too late to turn it around.

Respect is earned, not given. It doesn't help that the Big 10 has ZERO signature wins in the last 5 years except for OSU versus Texas.

Yeah, and freedom isn't free, a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush, a penny saved is a penny earned, and it's all bullshit.

What happened to the respect tOSU earned in beating EVERY team they faced in '02, not to mention beating Miami in the NC game. There's also that ND team, though somewhat a joke, that team was an offensive machine which tOSU pretty much throttled on the way to racking up 617 yards on. How many "signature wins" does any other conference possess during the same time period? There's only so many opportunities for those. Granted, we had two shots in a row, but that's hardly enough evidence to completely dismiss prior success.

People are really begging for Sanchez to be a Heisman trophy winner. I'm not sure that he has done enough to warrent such hype after only beating a sorry Virginia team. On Espin one fo th guys already has Sanchez above Tebow, Moreno, and Daniels as the leader for his Heisman vote. No doubt he has a lot of talent, but I think Palmer might have something to say about the talent part along with some guy named Leinart.

The national respect never really came from winning that championship due to the Clarett fiasco and then the Troy Smith incident. It went from 2002 NC right into the shitter as far as national rep goes.
