Game Thread Ohio State 3, Southern Cal 35 (Sept. 13)

Do the USC folks think that their offense will use more 3-step drops because of the O-line turnover and the relatively inexperienced QBs? (even is Sanchez is back, he'll have missed a good portion of fall camp)

It seems likely that we'll see more swing passes to McKnight, and when deep drops are taken, screen passes will be frequent.
I think alot will depend on how things go against virginia. I am sure the coaching staff has them practicing different scenarios just in case a change is needed. Alot will start falling into place this month, and alot also depends on Sanchez's progress.:)

But do you think they will go to a 3 step drop with the relative inexperience behind center?

Well said. Hopefully, we can cover the tight end in this game, and Heacock is agressive in a big game (sorry, still upset about defensive playcalling the last two NC games).

I hope Sanchez is back though, to limit the "well, USC wasn't at full strength" talk, though it's going to happen anyway, I'd like to limit it as much as possible.

Who gives a shit what people say. If we go out there and beat em.......I'll take it.

USC's online will be fine provided they worked out enough with Chuck Berry and ignored Coach Carlisle.

A worthwhile article on Maualuga.

usatoday

Maualuga hoping to gain respect on and off the field

LOS ANGELES - As a kid, in much the same way he has become perhaps college football's most feared defensive player, Southern California senior linebacker Rey Maualuga was always on the move.

He was born in Oklahoma, where his father, Talatonu, a native of American Samoa, was serving in the U.S. Army. Two months later, his family moved to Honolulu. In the sixth grade, he moved to Oxnard, Calif., a gritty distant suburb of Los Angeles. After his first year in high school in Ventura, Calif., he moved to Eureka, Calif., a remote town in the far northern part of the state amid giant redwoods.

Cont'd ...

SC will use 3-step drops, but probably not an inordinate amount. I think SC will also address pressure problems with QB rollouts. For example, see the two plays at 1:27 of this video:

Reardon having hip problems

From Monday's Practice Report:

Suddenly Thin at Center
The Trojans had several players sit out of Monday?s practices with various bumps and bruises from fall camp.

After practice Coach Carroll explained that the staff is just being cautious to keep the players fresh, but admitted that redshirt freshman center Michael Reardon?s hip issues are a more serious matter.

?The one guy that?s got a little bit of a problem is Michael Reardon. He?s got a hip issue that we are trying to figure out what we are going to do with it,? said Carroll. ?It has been bothering him a lot. It?s been nagging him for a long time.

?We thought we had him rehabbed through it but it started aggravating him again so we are going to have to get him checked out in the next couple of days.?

With Reardon sidelined and Jeff Byers still limited due to illness, the Trojans are suddenly very thin at the center position.

?It does affect us and particularly with Jeff Byers not back yet either,? said Carroll. ?Jeff is a center in his background too but Alex Parsons works there now. We are going to miss him (Michael Reardon) if he can?t get back out here for a while.?

Plan B

By Scott Wolf on August 13, 2008 4:20 AM | Permalink | Comments (0)

Brian Cushing is taking reps in practice at middle linebacker. Why? Because without Luthur Brown or Chris Galippo, USC does not want to throw a true freshman (Uona Kavienga) in perhaps the most stressful defensive position if Rey Maualuga got hurt.
It was a handful for Maualuga his freshman year. So if something happens, expect to see Cushing.

Dispatch from Howard Jones field
08-13-2008 12:14 p.m.

Thoughts from Wednesday morning’s practice, through the eyes of USCRipsIt…

- Offensive lineman Jeff Byers returned to action during this morning’s 90-minute practice after sitting out nearly all of Fall Camp with what had previously been diagnosed as an enlarged spleen. But USC’s athletic training staff and team doctors have now officially identified his sickness as Rocky Mountain spotted fever, and Byers, who's from Fort Collins, Colo., can now return to the field. “It’s great we finally know what he’s actually got and can treat it appropriately now,” Coach Carroll said.
