Official Server Upgrade discussion

Not to go full geek, but you know what pisses me off more than anything in the world? When someone says "NIC Card"

Which translates out to "Network interface card card".............that drives me nuts :)
A little off topic, but what the hell.....Does it bother you when people say "ATM machine"? It makes me want to smack them.

Someone asked about this (how we're hooked up) some time ago, said I would post it here when I got it, so here t'is;

• Qwest – two Gigabit Ethernet connections
• UUNet – one OC12c connection (2 GigE Connections soon)
• Level3 – four Gigabit Ethernet connections
• AT&T – two Gigabit Ethernet connections
• Global Crossing – two Gigabit Ethernet connections
• Bi-Coastal Private Peering – one Gigabit Ethernet connection

"Over 8 gigabits per second of available bandwidth."

Whatever all that means.

On another note, another snag was hit (of course). It did not involve a meteor. They're working on it, and I'm stressing appropriately, so all is as it should be.

All the arrangements have already been made to deal with the ram issue, we should jump back up from 2GB to 4 in relatively short order, assuming the replacement isn't bad. Seems only 1 of our 4 chips (as I understand the situation) were bad, but the mb requires them to be in pairs, so with one down, we're short two.

I'm going to try a new predictive tactic, to see if it helps my luck.

I don't think the new server is *ever* going to be up! NO WAY we make it by the start of the season. Hell, I sold it to a nice Mexican couple who wants to use it as a coffee table, and I'm going to buy an XBox360 and a chinchilla with the 3500 pesos I scored off of it.

That aside, I might get a call in the next few minutes saying we're golden, in which case I'll transfer us tonight, failing that, our guy in AZ is off until Sunday, so there won't be new progress until then.

Lol

And on that note, I'm happy to report I just got the call, the last hiccup was handled, the machine is live and chugging away nicely.

I'm on Cinnamon right now scooping everything up to copy it over to the new box. Would love to have us moved over before I call it a night tonight, we'll see how I hold up though.

So now we just need the new DIMMs from NewEgg, and a little downtime at some point in the future for them to be tossed in.

We're still on the old machine.

One little permissions issue is kicking my ass, and I don't know why. Grr. All that's broken is the front page on the other machine. Everything else (the forums, all the other features, etc.) are fine.

Been at this since midnight. May have to leave it as is, get some sleep, and look at it fresh later today.

My first guess had been perhaps some incompatible RAM had been mistakenly ordered/shipped since most machines are pretty whiney about the type of RAM they run on. At least the RAM is the issue and is not hard to replace at all
I assure you that all the RAM was the exact same type, brand, and fully functional when it was installed. The RAM we bought was certified by the motherboard vendor, SuperMicro, as ideal for their boards. I've run dozens of similar systems and not had any issues. As Clarity said, it's just one of those fluke things ... chalk it up to bad karma or something I guess. That memory was burned-in over a weeklong period using two different editions of MemTest86+, and in the weeks that I had it the machine never failed to boot or otherwise run stable.

I would also assure everyone that overheating is most certainly out of the question. Though the case is probably causing brownouts in Arizona from the power draw of the dozen cooling fans.

Actually, it probably is bad karma ... the last three weeks for me have just absolutely sucked all to hell. :(
