Berea buzzing over Browns
Monday, April 30, 2007
By Steve Doerschuk

BEREA Braylon Edwards popped up on ESPN?s NFL Draft set Sunday, sounding as if he won?t be filming drive-through commercials with Charlie Frye.

Not that Edwards is dissing Frye, but listen to what he had to say about No. 22 overall draft pick Brady Quinn:

For GM Savage, for the moment, life's a beach

SPORTS SPOTLIGHT
TODD PORTER

BEREA

In a few days, Browns General Manager Phil Savage will take a vacation. He and his wife will head where the sun is shining. Last year, they went mountain climbing.

Savage won't be climbing a mountain this year. He did that during the weekend.

For the first time in as long as most people can remember, the Browns had a perfect weekend. No one got hurt, and the team got two of the top five players in the NFL Draft.

Browns deal again with Cowboys; draft DE
Monday, April 30, 2007
By Steve Doerschuk
Repository sports writer

BEREA Phil Savage made another deal Sunday with his new best friend Jerry Jones. Otherwise, the Browns general manager wasn't dropping many famous names on the second day of the draft.

On the heels of two big Saturday trades that brought potential starters at quarterback (Brady Quinn) and cornerback (Eric Wright), Savage and Jones made a low-watt swap.

BEREA -- The writing on the wall for the second day of drafting for the Browns was scribbled on Saturday night when Browns general manager Phil Savage voiced his apathy with the talent left on the board.

''Quite frankly,'' Savage said after trading up twice on the first day, ''I'm not that excited about the second day of the draft.''

The Browns drafted accordingly yesterday.

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

BEREA, Ohio -- Give the Cleveland Browns credit for being gutsy. They laid all their chips down in this year's NFL draft and feel comfortable with their decision.

Browns second-round pick ready to be great

By Sean McClelland

BEREA ? Eric Wright knows what you're thinking: just another football player with an arrest on his resume.
"When you're a high-profile guy, 'arrested' is basically guilty," the cornerback from UNLV said Sunday. "I know you guys are going to stir up controversy, but I just need to be myself and everything will take care of itself."

Also from this article:

? Browns players are eating healthier. The team nutritionist has ordered that sprinkles and other tasty ice-cream toppers be banned from the cafeteria.

No more sprinkles? Oh, we're going to the Super Bowl now!

So based on the way the NFL handled Brady Quinn this weekend, I assume as soon as Browns fans start to boo him they will move the game to a private location where they are out of the public eye to finish the game so his feelings don't get hurt.

At least that private location isn't a holding cell Bunglefan!

Shouldn't you be out buying a Leon Hall jersey? :tongue2:

I know that alot of people are unhappy with the trade, but I like what the Browns did with their draft. Best OL. Best CB. Just about everyone's second QB prospect. Two big DEs to go with our 3-4...hopefully adding depth to the D-line. Let's just hope that this translates to wins. Hopefully with Brady Quinn on the team we can have a Drew Brees/Philip Rivers type of QB situation.

I'm confused how Brady Quinn all of a sudden became a franchise quarterback just because he dropped 19 spots. How is it that so many opinions can change that quickly? He wasn't the answer before the draft. He doesn't become the answer simply by being picked 22nd instead of 3rd.

And I think, in reality, he was still picked in the top 10 by the Browns, because that's what we gave up for him.

We won't know that. I said before the draft that if we go with a QB I'd rather take Quinn. I think he'll be a good quarterback. I just didn't think we'd take him this year, especially at third overall.

Next year's top pick would've been used on a QB most likely, so trading it doesn't really matter. It's would you rather have Brohm/Brennan or Quinn. I'd take Quinn personally.

Would not making the trade and drafting Brohm in the top five next year(in addition to us keeping a few mid round picks) really have made that huge of a difference on the franchise? I mean, you can't settle for quarterbacks in the NFL. You HAVE to get a quarterback who you think will be successful.

And there Troy Smith was for the taking....
