Official Cleveland Browns Draft Thread

This is my first time posting on this thread b/c I am a fan of the Packers but I thought this was a good question and I figured to let you all Browns fans answer it....

During college football, we (Buckeye fans) all hated Brady Quinn. We all thought he was overrated, sucked, terrible, etc.. Now that he has been chosen by the Browns to step up and most likely lead the team, do you, as a Browns and a Buckeyes fan, now like Brady Quinn because he is the control of the Browns offense?

Read the last 10 pages or so

I may be in the minority but I cant wait to see what Quinn can do.

I was very happy we ended up with him.

That's fine.

I'll concentrate on the first line. Do you still believe that Quinn has "peaked" and is ready to "underachieve"?

Have you seen anything in recent weeks to suggest otherwise???

I believe he has had at least as good of coaching while at ND his last 2 years than quite possibly he is going to get in Cleveland right now. I can't stand Weis, or in particular the Flippin' Amish, but Weis has his fingerprints all over a QB with 3 super bowl rings. And those same fingerprints on Brady Quinn. So peaking and underachieving will remain to be seen, but underachieving changes it's meaning by 19 picks worth. You would think the 3rd pick could be open for more scrutiny than the 22nd pick, I just don't think Quinn is going to get the benefit of the doubt since he wore a golden helmet.

If you want a straight up answer, I will stand up and admit that I am learning to separate the NFL from it's minor league system, NCAA football. I will no longer hold Quinn's college choice against him, as I have dealt with Winslow and Edwards already. Seems a waste of energy at this point. So yeah, nothing else the Browns have done has worked, let's get Brady F'n Quinn in here and see what the hell happens.

i'll support him but c'mon brady didn't do shit at ND as far as im concerned.. i can throw jump balls to jeff smarasda all day too. every game i watched him play in i was amused at how bad he played under pressure. i'll be pulling for the guy now, but its gonna suck watching troy become a stud for the fuckin ravens. cant help but wonder if the ravens and jerry jones bluffed the hell out of the browns and are laughing their asses off at us. hopefully he'll be as good as all the 'experts' think but im not in that camp.

I think all of us around here tend to view Brady through scarlet colored glasses. He did at times fail to rise to the occasion, but let's face it, his team was often outmatched in those "big" games. The NFL is a very different game than college. In college, one bad game and your season is essentially over. Even Peyton Manning has a couple of clinker games a year in the NFL. I know many around here hated Brady getting the pub when Troy was doing nothing but winning. I appreciate that. But now, I hope the "experts" are right and Brady is the next great QB. Although I would have preferred to have seen them stack some picks in this draft, I think they can find guys with training camp cuts that can fill the holes as well as any 3rd or 4th rounder, especially with some cap room available. Besides, we better hope they were right to take Quinn because if they were wrong, it will take years to recover.

I just hope the addition of Thomas at LT will give the Browns the OL that they need to a) have a good running game and b) protect whichever QB long enough to get the ball to the WR's. Best case they filled all of the major holes on the OL, CB, and DE with Quinn being a better QB than most of us think he will be. Worst case they continue to have injury problems, none of the defensive draft picks play better than what they had this year, and Quinn is a turd. I'm willing to give them this season to prove me wrong about Quinn. At least he wasn't the #3 pick. If next years #1 is outside of the top 15 this will be a good move.

At first I thought we gave up too much for Quinn.

But after thinking about it, Charlie Frye is not the future. We needed a franchise QB, and I think Quinn fits that. Hes better than any QB in next years draft class. We probably wouldve drafted one next year anyway. I just look at it as if we got our QB a year earlier.

If that makes any sense haha.

As I said before, I loved the Thomas and Wright picks. But the Quinn seems sort of baffling. How can the team decide on Friday that they feel comfortable with the quarterback situation this year enough to pass on Quinn and then get desperate on draft day and trade away a top-10 pick for next year?

That's confusing. By drafting Thomas, the Browns were saying that they know their quarterbacks need more protection. If they get more protection, maybe we know more about what kind of ability they possess. I still see in Frye a lot of physical capabilities, and I'm waiting for him to pick up his mental game. Maybe with more time in the pocket, he'll show the complete package I believe he posesses.

When it's all said and done, I just want to know if people are going to give Quinn the same short timespan to make an impact as you have Frye.

They weren't any more desperate about the QB situation at pick #21 than they were at pick #4. They (correctly) surmised that Thomas was the wisest pick at #3, and if Quinn had been picked by the Vikings or Dolphins, the Browns would've been satisfied with their situation. As the round progressed, the saw the OPPORTUNITY to pick up another player high on their board by making a move. That's not desperation, that's initiative.

After thinking about it, (from the perspective of a Browns fan), I kind of like the trade. They already have their franchise left tackle, and a couple of good receivers (as long as winslow and edwards work out), so why not get the QB that you had highly rated anyway? They really only gave up next years draft pick, because all they did was slide their second rounder up. As long as they can pull out some wins, and have a middle of the road season, it would probably be a middle round draft pick, which wouldn't be huge to give up.

As far as I'm concerned, I give a lot of players a new start in the NFL, if i didn't like them because of their teams in college. I'm gonna give Quinn a chance to make me like him, so I hope he does well.

Any Browns fan who won't give this draft a chance might as well go root for the Colts now because they just took 3 Buckeyes. As far as Brady Quinn goes, if you hate this guy from the get-go, you are just close-minded. Let's draw the line, college was the last stop for all these guys. Troy Smith is a Raven, for crying out loud. Digest that one, if you can, I know I'm having a hard time. Saturday and Sunday are two different days, let's not get so backed into a corner. Go Browns.

Great post.

Holmes is a Steeler. Smith is a Raven.

Brady Quinn is a Brown. Give him a chance.

Alot of people said the same things about Manning that they are about Quinn. Am I saying Quinn will be as good as Peyton? No, but you never know.

In re Baltimore offering the same deal for Quinn, oft opined earlier in this thread, which Cleveland was then forced to match.
ESPN
Newsome, by the way, was one of several general managers trying to move up in the first round for a shot at Brady Quinn as the Notre Dame quarterback continued to tumble. He was not, though, willing to surrender his first-round choice in next year's draft as Cleveland general manager and former Ravens' personnel director Phil Savage did.
Ok, can we say, finally, that it was not the same deal?

Change of heart Schwab??

apparently getting him at 22 was better with no first rounder next year or 2nd rounder this year (although they did trade later to get a 2nd rounder) instead of letting him fall to the Browns in the 2nd round anyway....

There is no way that BQ would fall to the Browns in the 2nd Round. Let's not be nuts. He would have been picked by KC at 23 and do you really think that Detroit would have passed on him a second time with their own QB issues that they have?? It was even possible that the Bears would have taken him with their pick in the first. I am glad the Browns did not take him at 3, but I can not fault them for taking him at 22 and trading the 1st rounder next season. The Browns want to win NOW, I mean FINALLY!!! WTF took them so long to get a sense of urgency to win?? Apparently it took everyone having their jobs on the line for them to get aggressive in the draft. Buckin A is right, what they have done for the last 7 years has not worked. It was time to break the mold and make things happen. I am very excited for the upcoming Browns season. I realistically can see them improving to a 7-9 or (God willing) an 8-8 club in 2007.
