Offensive Line - 2004/05

I think the opening day line will look like this:

LT Boone
LG Sims
C Mangold
RG Person
RT Rehring

Mitchum will see the field plenty, but I think that this is the lineup that will open some holes for Haw and Pittman next season.

I'm not a big fan of rotating O linemen. I believe that it messes with cohesiveness, but Mitchum is going to be hard to keep off the field, from what I understand.

If guys don't improve a lot for next year, I would say everything is up for grabs. IMHO, our biggest problem this year has been our OL and DL play. We have not controlled the line of scrimmage at all. Whether it's the players, coaches or a combination of both, something has to be done.

I will say I would like guys that are competitors playing (they hate it so bad when there guy beats them). These guys will work their tail off in preparation to games and then out work the guy across from them to beat them in the game. I just don't think we have that with this group...and they all have to work together as a single unit to make it happen. One single failure can doom a play so they all have to do the job on every play.

With all this said, I don't know any of these guys personally, but I would say Person, Sims, Mangold, Rehring, Boone, Mitchum, Cordle, Bemoll all have a chance at playing along with the others on this years OL. We need some serious help up front and hope like heck these guys take this years running game personally and work their butts off so that next year they might get back to dominating teams with the running game.

First I want to state that I come to these boards as a fan I listen to what everyone has to say with an open mind, and I also post as a fan. And most of you know who I am going to lean for in a certain postion.

So here is my question... Why do some of you think Steve (Rehring) is going to move to RT next season?

He has a true LT frame and is playing that position in the Big 10 as a true freshman. And from what videos I have watched on Boone he plays RT in 90% of them. Grant it Steve has made some frosh mistakes. But when he is in the game there does seem to be more of a push on the DL.

Once again I want you to know that I do have an open mind to what you all will respond with, and I want to know what makes you think this way. I will not trash you for your post, I am just looking for your thoughts on it.

So I agree with di hard's second line up. And I could maybe see Boone pushing Barton for some time. But all the other incoming freshmen I see red shirting.

Here's my $.02, take it FWIW. Not that I have watched Steve solely, nor have I been at practice, but I think most people's idea is that Steve is aggressive and nasty and we seem to put those on the right side to run. Also I think they want tackles with great feet to go against the most athletic pass rushers. Again not saying Steve doesn't have the best feet, but just not positive that he does.

I'll say this...I haven't been this excited about a young offensive line since the days of Pancake Pace. And with the speed and size of Haw...along with Pittman...I really like where our running game is going to be next year. I personally love the way this team is shaping up in the trenches for next year. My only concern is special teams. I wish Nugent could stay forever. I really haven't been this sad to see a kid play his last game in the Shoe in a long time. And it's a kicker. I know a lot of people don't think kickers deserve a lot of respect...but this one does. Not only has he made a ton of key kicks...he has even made a handful of key tackles. I will never see an OSU player wear #85 again without thinking of NUUUUGE!

I agree whole heartedly. Nuge will be missed. But he'll be making big money this time next year. You can count on that. When they announce his name during Senior Day activities, the stadium will erupt with what may be the loudest NUUUUUUGE ever. Seeing guys like Fox, Mo Hall and Fraser go is depressing too. These guys have given their all on the field for four years. I wish the best for Lydell Ross when he goes and I hope he is successful wherever he lands, I just hope the stadium treats him with respect when they call his name. He has worked hard here, things just didn't pan out.

I'm pretty sure Ross will get a good cheer. He works his ass off. It isn't because of lack of effort that he has had problems. Dustin Fox is probably the most underrated guy on this team. He was missed A LOT against Purdue. We NEED him next week badly. He has grown up a lot during his 4 years. I think he is going to suprise a lot of people in the NFL. He has a lot of raw talent. The one thing I like about next year though, is that we aren't losing 14 guys to the NFL draft :) It is obvious that it is hard to have a great team when losing all that talent. Too many holes to fill, no matter how good of a recruiting job you have done.

Great job by the line today. Just think. Next year Sims, Datish, Mangold, Shafer, Barton, Rehring, and Downing all return. Plus Mitchum, Person, and Skinner will be ready. As if that's not enough, you have Boone, Cordle, Bemoll, and hopefully Wilson and others. I'm pumped. Imagine what Troy & Company can do with a solid line from the get-go.

Okay, so the o-line played better than usual, but still has some things to work on. Yes, the line did a good job of pass blocking, but they did not seem to move anyone off the line to give the RB's room to run. While the input of T.J Downing seemed to help, this line still has a lot of room to improve. Bollman should have this line playing pretty good next year or else he has got to go.

A couple reasons the o-line looked good today, was because of the weak d-line from scUM and their conservative play. I mean wasn't this the same d-line that gave up over 300 some yards to Sparty's rushing attack. OUCH!

I posted this elsewhere, but here it is.

Bollman is all but done as the O line coach. He hasn't even been on the field the last few weeks. He has been in the box in contact with Coach Tressel.

Peterson is doing the majority of the O line coaching and it shows. The line has been better the last few weeks and is playing with a mean on!!

O line play is about attitude and with Peterson running the show, the line is just going to get better. The extra practice time with the bowl game is absolutely invaluable!!!

The OL as a whole played well but got dominated on the goal line stands. We should've had 14 points vice the three we ended up with. How about the play Watson made when he leap-frogged over Mangold to stuff the run?

I'm not slamming the OL, but there still is some improvement that needs to be made. The thing is, though, the improvement seems to be already gradually occuring now that Peterson is directly involved...
