Offensive Line - 2004/05

Ok granted we are fairly young by class year for the OL, but 3 of our starters have had significant playing time in the past. Sims and Mangold have been playing ever since 2002, and Kne played significant minutes last year in place of Bryce Bishop when he was not doing so well. Our OL isnt as young as we would like to think, IMO because of this. Those 3 should be able to at least be adequate at worst. The remaining two, Datish was the top ranked OL in Ohio his senior year so hopefully someone can light a fire under his ass and get him to step up , and the "terrible twosome" that mans the RT position, Barton and Schaeffer have looked overmatched in games.
I agree...that's why I attribute such a low percentage to youth.

What concerns me is that we are not getting better from week to week - and I blame coaching for that.

I'm giving them (Datish, Barton, Schaeffer) a little benefit of doubt b/c I know players don't always develop as fast as we would like.

And for the coaches - I give them none.

They took all the credit when we won the NC, now they get all the blame when the crap hits the fan.

It got to the point on Saturday where I was cheering Iowa to shut us out and run up the score so maybe, just maybe we would finally see Bollmans head on a stake. The O-line has gotten worse since Bollman took over, and its not getting any better. We had average to above average O-line play in 2001, this is probably because all these players had been coached by Coopers O-line coach. In 2002 we had average O-line play, MoC may have made things look better, because when he went out we looked pretty sorry. In 2003 we had bad O-line play, anything the players had learned from Coopers O-line coach was either forgotten, or they weren't allowed to use it. In 2004 we have had horrible O-line play, these are all Bollmans guys, there are no excuses. The most telling fact is that as bad as the O-line was in 2003, 3 of them are playing in the NFL. All the facts point straight to Bollman. The only question is will JT throw Bollman overboard, or sink the ship with him??

Before the season if someone told me that TOSU and Iowa would both have crappy o-lines, i would have asked them to share what they were smoking.
Iowa's "crappy" o-line dominated our D-line. Why would our o-line not be crappy? Last year we were bad, and those players were veterans who are playing in the NFL. If Bollman keeps his job after this year we wont be any better next year.

I agree with some of your points, but there was pressure on Tate. He was just running wild because it was consistently coming from two players and easily read (Hawk and Fraser). I don't think we saw Tate with any pocket presence because of all the boots.

All I need to say is 5th string RB.

Our defense was "porous" but that tailback bounced a few to the outside. Those yards can be attributed to A.J. Hawk being tired from already tackling the entire Iowa offense or our DBs playing 10-15 yards off receivers. Hats off to special teams, that is the only area performing well on this team.

Next Year?

Now I'm pumped about this week and Michigan. However I can't stand to hold this in any longer....

What do you think happens on the O line next year? I predict that 2-3 freshman will be starting/playing.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say that if Boone/Ronnie Wilson come in early like they're suppose to do that those two get the nod.....

I've heard Cordle is more aggressive than Boone, and we can't forget about Boemell (sp.)...... I don't look for this line to look the same next year. I say from left to right.... Boone,Sims, Mangold,Wilson,Rehring.

well thats why I was try'n to say Freshman..... and while I think all those players have EXCELLENT shots I just think Boone/Wilson come off as nasty, and go kick ass mentality.... For sure I heard Person is also very tough. Boone/Wilson will have to pass these guys thats for sure, but I dunno how you could keep those two off the field! We have alot of depth on the line next year we just need to find a combo that works and STICK WITH IT. Schafer will not be starting next year. Anyone notice that Schafer gets a hell of a lot of penalties.

Boone and Wilson will have an opportunity to learn the offense by enrolling early, but Mitchum, Skinner, and Person will have a year of learning the blocking schemes. The problem this year is as much missed assignments as it is anything else...if not more.

It is extremely difficult for a true frosh to step in and play

Yeah I definatly agree, the kids we have right now definatly have one leg up on the others. I just don't think we can keep two kids as nasty as them two. I hope they pick up the system because I think those two would be very good for us. I'd look for Cordle, and Bomelle to RS. So hopefully we get it straight next year. For the first time It seems like we could see a pissed off type of line next year.

mangold starts at center....

mitchum has been getting rave reviews for his scout team play....player of the week more than once....

rehring can be a stud......

sims was better as a freshman than he is now....

boone, bemoll, taz, skinner and person will battle for the final spot.....

from left to right next year.....a guess...

rehring, sims, mangold, mitchum, boone/taz

no matter what....this is the top talent in the bigten and maybe the country....

I'd say Rerhing - Sims - Mangold - Person - Barton to start the season with Boone getting worked in at LT like Rerhing's doing this year. I also thinK Mitchum should get alot of PT at both Guard positions. Barton's played fairly well at RT. He's only a freshman and he was injured alot, so we haven't gotten to see his full potential.

Enough of that, let's beat scUM!!!!!

100% percent with you on this one Dihard, and I didn't know Mitchum was gett'n that much praise so I'll definatly look for him next year!! We definatly are still the best looking as far as talent for the future goes as I've ever seen, but we need to devolpe these players.... my god. A new Oline coach would do wonders. I'm look'n to just move people alittle better next year thats all!!!

Also I just wanna throw this out there.... Texas is a night game next year, and I'll be there.
