It's amazing that people keep harping on this point. How many D-1 schools have dominant offensive lines? You could probably count them on the fingers on one hand. Does that mean that all but a select few schools struggle to put up points? No way in hell. I agree that our O-line play has been bad, but I think that's an easy cop out in explaining our offensive woes. It's all about the offensive scheme and playcalling. As long as we have an ultra-conservative offensive philosophy and the "play not to lose" gameplan, there are going to be plenty of excuses for why we aren't a good offensive team.

We need a commitment to "outstanding" offensive play, and not just "adequate" QB play as JT was recently quoted as saying. We need an offensive scheme that is reliant on unpredictable, adaptable play calling. We could have a base set of 5-10 offensive plays, but if they're called in the right situation, they would be unstoppable with our athletes.

You think schools like Cal, Fresno State, Boise State...heck even USC, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State have 5 dominant offensive linemen on their O-lines? Look at our team from last year...it's a telling fact that 3 of them are starting in the NFL right now, meaning we had the (rare) O-line talent, yet what did we do? Struggle the whole year. If we had anything better than "adequate" offensive play last year we might have been defending our second straight NC this season.

JT MUST GO.

Dumbass. Tressel went 3-8 in at YSU the season after his four-title-game run (1995). He then promptly led YSU to two more title games in the next four years. Hell, even Woody Hayes' 1959 team had a losing record (3-5-1) two years after his 1957 national title. They rebounded to go 7-2 the next year and then win a national title in 1961 with an 8-0-1 record.

Bottom line, this shit happens. We will recover...not this year, but next.

Back to the subject, this is by far the worst I've seen our OL play over a several-game span...even worse than last year. If the OL play doesn't improve, and improve soon, we will not win another game this year...period.

lemme toss out a question... is the O-line TALENT the problem, the O-line COACHING the problem or a combination??

IMO the talent exists on the team... so, by default, it has to be coaching... but I've read some pretty analytical and impressive postings by fellas that obviously are better equipped to respond....

and by the way, I see J Tressel here for the next TWENTY years...

I don't have any idea what the percentages are but I can tell you this

JT's First year we had Bentley, Walter, Olivea, Steponovich, and I. Douglass and we were pretty good. Wells had a big year, and the future looked good if our returning starters continue to develop. We also ran all over scUM.

JT's second year (national Championship) we had Steponovich, Olivea, Sims, Mangold, Bishop, and Clarke, and the play of #13 helped a bad offensive line look great

JT's third year, the players were the same, the O-Linemen slimmed down, were in better shape, and the O-Line was once again worse than the year before.

This is JT's fourth year, we still have 2/5 of last year's o-line and we are once again worse as a unit.

Other teams loose offensive linemen, and to loose 3 in a year should not be impossible for a tallented team to overcome. I have a hard time believing we mis-evaluated all of these players. I don't believe, and the coaches agree, it is not a lack of effort. Then it must be the coaches. There is no other reason. The O-Line is not being developed, the scheme doesn't work, or the unity that an O-Line must have isn't there.

I heard that Sims continues to get failing grades on his performance, but he is the type of tallent that should be our go to linemen. (if you need to get a tough one or two yards, run behind him and he will get it done).

There is no way that you can look at this situation and not say it must be coaching. Even if it is tallent or inexperience, that is the coaches fault, because he brought the players here thinking they were talented, and he didn't get the experience in previous years, or enough reps in practice.

There just is no excuse for us being this bad. None! None! None!

I think that overall our team effort is horrid. Don't just get down on the line even though they are performing well under the expectations of the Buckeye Faithful.

Poor play stems from either poor talent or poor execution. My $$$ is on poor execution. Poor execution stems from either too many recreational drugs too close to gametime or from poor preparation. My $$$ is on poor preparation. Poor preparation lands firmly on the coaching staff. It is their responsibility to develop, instruct and execute and effective gameplan. Our gameplans seem to be the following...

Offense:

1st down pass over the head of one of our receivers or get sacked or fumble.
2nd down (if awarded) run between the tackles for a loss or no gain.
3rd down (if awarded) pass either to the opposing team or behind the TE or WR.
4th down (if awarded) rely on the punting game to win it for us.

Defense:
Don't get pressure on the quarterback
Don't blitz
Don't cover receivers
Don't stop the run

It simple...Go out and play like Prairie View!

I question whether we will win another game this year based on our previous 2 performances. Indiana is our best bet but after that look out. Teams are going to come at us with a vangenance for years of pummeling them AKA Nebraska getting taken to the woodshed by Texas Tech last week.

Coaching - 95%

Lack of game experience by new starters - 5%
Ok granted we are fairly young by class year for the OL, but 3 of our starters have had significant playing time in the past. Sims and Mangold have been playing ever since 2002, and Kne played significant minutes last year in place of Bryce Bishop when he was not doing so well. Our OL isnt as young as we would like to think, IMO because of this. Those 3 should be able to at least be adequate at worst. The remaining two, Datish was the top ranked OL in Ohio his senior year so hopefully someone can light a fire under his ass and get him to step up , and the "terrible twosome" that mans the RT position, Barton and Schaeffer have looked overmatched in games. The fact that Matt Roth made both of them look like they were on rollerskates just by a simple bull rush in the game is typical of the type of effort this OL seems to be giving week in and week out.

You really think O-state's O-line has no talent?

To me they look confused. If you have the game on tape or Tivo you can see they are playing with very little fire, a sure bet that they are playing scared of making mistakes. They honestly look lost.

80% coaching and 20% youth
