Offensive Line - 2004/05

Agree with Mili - we are better, but not where we need to be. We couldn't get it done on the goal line, but Joe was running through some holes that just weren't there early in the season.

The good news is that next season should see a quantum leap, espeically if it is true Peterson has taken over. Underclassmen playing well on the OL is the exception rather than the rule and most OL RS - meaning they aren't really upper classemen until their 4th year. We had only one player in the rotation on OL who had more than 2 years experiience under his belt and he was a former walk-on. There was every reason to expect a sub-standard OL this year (my gripe has always been with the past three seasons).

We bring back 7 OL who started at least one game thie season.

Rehrig got his chance largely because he was here in the spring. With a year under their belts Mitchum, Person and Skinner all enter the mix. (I wouldn't be surprised if at least one of them wasn't ready late this season but JT didn't want to burn a RS.) And Boone could be one of those rare kids who can step right in as a true Frosh (anyone know if he is thinking of enrolling early?).

The future is bright - and starts with the bowl game.

I asked the same question a few weeks back in his recruiting thread. The response I received was that he was planning on being here for spring practice.

Here is a quote from a post by tsteele316 a few days ago.

"Gary Housteau posted over on BN that Boone should find out in a few days whether he will be able to enroll early at osu or not. I'll see if I can dig up the link."

What is the situation with our O-line?

They looked better as the year went on and they are only losing one guy if im correct. Anyone know if they are going to be the O-line we had when we won the title? I think it there will be less sacks because our QB is mobile, but im looking at the running game. Whats the deal with them? Can we expect great things.

The O-Line should improve over time with the talent that is coming to Columbus. Tressel and Company have done a fantastic job getting great O-Lineman last year and this year. I would bank that these boys coming in are going to be more talented and meaner compared to the 2002 offensive lineman. Things will get better!!

Barton
Boone
Rehring
Skinner
Bemoll
Cordle
Person
Mitchum

Now that is talent!

Well, you could say it's just because they are beginning to gel.. but Mili believes it's because Peterson has taken over the major role of OL coach.

When Peterson was wooed away from Arizona to come back to his alma mater you knew good things were to come. It was just a matter of TIME.
Now the time has come and hopefully we are seeing the results.

When Jim Bollman left the Chicago Bears alot of heads were filled with ???????? marks, like who is this guy. Nobody ever heard of him,
except Coach Tressel. And Bollman always said he would only leave
the NFL........... for one guy. Well, we did not know what to expect
from him at that point in time.

Now 3 years later his popularity has decreased at a level that is not
quite favorable. IF you have ever listened to Jim Bollman, he really
sounds very deep in his explanation of techiques and blocking schemes.
Something that alot of NFL players are savy to understand. But TO JUST OUT OF HIGH SCHOOL KIDS, it maybe alittle difficult to pick up at first.

This is where the learning process comes into play. And with Peterson now on board working hand in hand with Bollman things may have become more
simpler to our players in understanding the logic. Jon Peterson has a way
of getting his point across to the players about what Bollman is trying to teach them. Its all in the language, people.

Sometimes you can talk to a person until you are blue in the face and they look back at you, like a deer staring into head lights. Then someone comes
along and says things different and then all of a sudden the lightbulb goes ON.

One of our posters in here is "ExHawg' and a couple of others that I like to read thier view on what the offensive line is all about. Maybe they can add alittle more insight to this thread than i can.

Yes,,,,, its true DEfense wins championships. But down in the trenches is where alot of games are won and lost. Lets hope that the time has come for our offensive line to turn the corner in Ohio State football, and bring us back to some sort of prominence.

I am still skeptical about our philosphy up front on the offensive line, I don't agree with zone blocking, we havent executed it on a consistent basis all year and even though we had some success against SCUM, I think the jury is still out on this group, I think the staff needs to look at changing the attitude and scheme up front.

Lets get back to bashing people in the mouth.....thats OSU football.

A little late....but,

Hey Mili:

On the play on Watson that you cite, the call was for the "submarine" block- a type of block that I have never understood. Watson guessed right and made a highlight play.

How about number 55 driving Watson into the turf on Smith's goal line plunge for a yard and a half?

Did you watch the second half? Watson's 340 lbs. really showed up big. Number 55 was routinely knocking Watson on his butt and going after a linebacker.

Just to set the record straight.

GO BUCKS!

He did turn things around. At first I was a little concerned that Watson was gonna become a problem, but Mangold stepped up big. Watson's no slouch either, as that DL is a stark contrast to the LB and CB crew from UM.
