Offensive Line - 2004/05

At the end of the day tho Mangold won teh battle. There's a reason Watson is merely a big10 award winner, and Mangold is being talked about for the Rimington next year.

Hey Mili:

On the play on Watson that you cite, the call was for the "submarine" block- a type of block that I have never understood. Watson guessed right and made a highlight play.

How about number 55 driving Watson into the turf on Smith's goal line plunge for a yard and a half?

Did you watch the second half? Watson's 340 lbs. really showed up big. Number 55 was routinely knocking Watson on his butt and going after a linebacker.

Just to set the record straight.

GO BUCKS!

Seeing as you're the father of #55, I can understand your stance. I did watch the entire game (about 30 times now), and while there may have been some good blocks here and there, the OL as a whole got dominated on those two goal-line stands. I'll check the blocking on Smith's TD and see what Nick did. Also, the OL did real well when they were backed up against their own goal line. However, the fact that we couldn't run for shit (aside from Smith) from our 30-yard-line onward, points at least to an extent to the OL.

Vern I know you won't go into detail but a simple yes or no answer would be appreciated...

Is Peterson's role with the OL more significant this year?
I'd like to know the answer to this one myself. I don't have nearly the insight into the program that many of you do, but I have to say that I'm looking for someone to shoulder some of the responsibility for our anemic offensive efforts over the past couple of years. I'm not always thrilled with JT's playcalling, but its our execution that has seemed so lame. And I believe 100% that the kids on the OL (Mangold very much included) have outstanding skills and ability.

So what's the deal with Bollman? I haven't read a whole lot positive on him, but I have to say I don't know much about him. It seems like people have been concerned about his ability for some time. Is he now out of the way? Or should he be?

If anyone has thoughts on the matter, sure would like to hear them...

UPDATE

After reviewing many comments on the board, he's not real popular. But his bio looks pretty damn good.

Same team

Mili:

it is tough to be objective in my position and I try to put my coach's hat on when I comment on the subject. But unlike the view that we see on TV, I had a good look into the heart of the line play in the second half and Watson spent a lot of time on the ground.

As for Peterson, I really can't say. Truthfully, he is an enigma. My guess is that he is having a difficult time adjusting to the mental aspects of the game.

GO BUCKS!

PS Mili- I bellieve that you have watched the game a number of times- my comment was rhetorical!

Peterson..mental aspects of the game? I thought people were talking about the TE/Recruiting coordinator..John Peterson..Am I missing something here?

VL, Were you referring to David Patterson from the DL?

It's good to hear that our OL play, especially that of Nick, was better than what it showed on TV. Maybe Michigan's two goal line stands fired them up and resulted in their improved play in the second half. I just keep thinking how much better it would've been of we got 14 points instead of 3 points on those two drives. OSU 48, Mich 21 sounds real good to me.

Maybe I could be wrong here. But with Bollman up in the booth now he can see things in a different way in regards to the offensive blocking techiques
Maybe with Petersen on the ground there is a good combo of the two in
working with the O/L in the future. After all it was Tressel who called Bollman away from the Chicago Bears in 2001. I have said this before and I will say it again. Maybe Bollmans ways of teaching the offensive line is going way over thier heads and he is yet, unsucessful in selling his ideas to the line in general. I think he is still a good coach and Tressel will figure a way to get Petersen and Bollman on the same page before spring drills.

Offensive Line - 2005

I was checking out the roster (they updated it a few days ago) and Rehring is up to 330, Barton is up to 325 and is listed at 6'7" now. Hopefully that's good weight they put on. Also almost all of the younger guys have put on weight as well.

Here's my dream scenario: Barton and Rehring at tackle, move Sims down to guard along with Downing with Mangold at center.

That's

6'8" 6'4" 6'4" 6'5" 6'7"
330 lbs. 310 lbs. 290 lbs. 305 lbs. 325 lbs.
Rehring Sims Mangold Downing Barton

across the front. (sorry about the messed up spacing, it keeps smooshing it together on me and I can't figure out how to keep it spread out)

That's a pretty damn good line in terms of size! I know that size isn't the only thing when talking about an O-line, but after watching The Game and the Alamo bowl again and the way that our line played in those games I am extremely excited about how good this group could be.

In addition to that throw in the backups:

Boone at 6'8" 315
Mitchum is 6'6" 295
Skinner is 6'5" 300
Person at 6'4" 315
Datish at 6'5" 295

And apparently everyone has been raving about Cordle as well even though he seems a bit small to me at 275. But judging by the way everyone else put on weight between this year and last (especially Rehring, Barton, Mitchum, and Skinner) he should pack on the muscle in no time.

It seems like Tressel does a great job developing his lineman. He whips them into shape, makes them drop ten or twenty pounds, then packs it right back on in muscle (ala Rehring).

But anyways, like I said, I am extremely excited about our O-Line this year and it looks like we have plenty of solid backups that could step in at any time. If we land guys like Connor Smith and Aaron Brown the future looks even brighter!

Oh when oh when is football season going to start!

:gobucks3::gobucks4:

P.S. I hope I packed enough stuff in here to justify a new thread, I was thinking about tagging it on to the Texas game thread but thought it would get lost.

this is great stuff, our oline really stepped it up the last 2 games of the year and hopefully they pick up where they left off, as long as that weight being put on is "good weight" then i think we should be alright, hands down this has got to be the best o line since tressel has been here and it potentially can really turn some heads and surprise many

a big line like this, which could really open up some big holes, could really help the development of maurice wells. how great would it be to have a back of his caliber have as high a confidence of anyone in CFB? having that and two backs that can flat out play should make our running game amazing!

a lot of coaches, opposing fans, analysists and so on will say that we arent title contenders because we havent proven that we can run the ball, with a line like this barring serious injury i see no problem stopping us from having an extremely effective running game, especially when you consider our recieving talent which will stop teams from loading up the box.
