Offensive Line - 2004/05

That's great news for the entire team. Steve seemed almost too excited last year early on, but who can really blame him. He obviously wanted to excel and he has. Congrats to him!

He and Alex Boone make a nice small mountain, 13'4" and 650 lbs. between those two.

What happens to Alex Boone for the next three years if Rehring is the man at that spot? I think it's fair to speculate on that possibility now, because it is pretty obvious from the end of last year and the shape he is in right now that Rehring is one the coaches like.

To me, it's kind of crazy to think that Rehring and Barton could be our tackles for the next few years after we've recruited Person, Boone and Skinner.

Trust me Boone will be on the field at some point. He's one of those recruit that are usually more often than not going to live up to the hype. Now if those boys beat Boone out then thats fine I guess Boone will just have to lose weight and become a full back or something. lol.

Seriously tho the best player plays period.

that is huge, sims himself has said that hes a guard at heart, isnt rehring the biggest guy on the team?
From the official site, with the roster updated as of 7/21/05 (although that doesn't mean that the weights are current as of that date), these are the biggest guys:

I am pretty sure they weighed in the day they checked in for camp. Steve was 326 then. When I saw him for picture day he looked lighter then Boone.

He looked lighter than Boone in their picture together.

I was impressed how good(and mean) he looked. He's come a long way since
spring camp '04 when I remember him 'selling Buicks' into the can.

Great job , S.R.

:oh: :io:

Mangold will not get moved over to guard, no way. Are you going to replace TJ? He was the guy who really made the difference at the end of last year. I don't see JT moving one of the best centers in the country unless there is a total dearth of ability at guard, which there is not. they have said in the past that Cordle ws looking very good as Mangold's eventual successor, though. I hope Rehring works out at tackle, and then Boone can gradually work in at right tackle, where he is most comfortable anyway.

yeah mangold will not play gaurd I bet.... Its been said that Cordle will spend some time at gaurd so he can get some playing time. Cordle was said to be subing in for Mangold to give mangold a breather from time to time.

maybe JT would be helping Mangold's future by 'reminding' pro scouts Mangold can play both... thus adding flexability... which is getting more and more valuable to pro teams... kinda like Stepanovich may have to slide to guard for a while while his right hand is recovering from surgery...

and at the same time, JT is getting the protege some experience while his mentor (Mangold) could be right next to him helping educate...(did you see that, did you see this, do this when that happens)

I tend to agree with 44820. We all know Tress loves to rotate guys in and out, as long as the talent is there. It keeps the guys fresh and helps ensure continuity from one year to the next.

Besides, how many articles have we seen talk about the depth at OL? How often have we heard Tress say that he needs to find ways to get players on the field? Put the two together maybe?

Every year there's quite a bit of optimism about the OL, but I think this year it's finally warranted. They were playing with a mean streak at the end of last season and all look great so far. When your backups consist of Boone, Cordle, Mitchum, Person, and Skinner, you've got some real options. Considering how much Coach Tressel rotates guys in and out along the lines, anybody that's good enough will see some serious time. It'll help us in the 4th quarter when the starters haven't played the entire game and you can rotate in a couple fresh guys as well.
