Offensive Line - 2004/05

i think that our O-line started turning the corner as soon as Datish was replaced by Barton... Kne was supplanted at times as well by Downing, and recieved a lot of valuable PT... i think that this line is VERY underrated going into the season, and could very well be one of the best in the country this year...

We don't know how good this line is until the Texas game. We should be able to run the ball down Miami's throats, their front 7 just doesn't look like it will be strong enough to stop a Big 10 running game. I think we really need this to give our line and running game confidence and momentum going into the Texas game. But Texas may have the best D-line in the country, and their LB corps. isn't bad either, it isn't near what we have, but it's still good. If the O-line wins the battle against Texas...then WATCH OUT!

I think the addition of Troy Smith during the second half of last season helped give this line some confidence, especially in pass blocking. When you have a QB that is tough to sack, then it makes your job on the Oline so much easier. Zwick isn't good at avoiding sacks, and I think this really caused our line to struggle.

If you are working your ass off as an O-lineman, and your QB is still getting sacked and the running game is going nowhere...you are going to get frustrated and start missing assignments and lacking aggressiveness. Likewise if the opposing defense is working their ass off...getting pressure, but still not able to produce, then they are going to get discouraged and make the O-line's job even easier.

Who you have in your backfield makes all the difference on how the line plays. This is why the line opened huge holes for MoC, and this is why the line performed well after Troy Smith showed his ability on the field.

Now if a RB can step up and make things happen on his own...then I believe this line is going to start to really start to make things happen on their own as well.

Nande is a beast...but it shouldn't matter. If we can't neutralize a team that has one great player in their front 7, then we will have huge problems the next week when we go up against 5 of them.

A couple of other thoughts.

Let me be the last to put too much stock in recruiting rankings, but OSU has three OL on its roster who were rated 17 or better as OL in their national recruiting class. All three of those are on the second team as listed above. Only two of the listed starters were rated in the top 100.

Point being that there will be changes as the season goes on, but even more importantly there will be tremendous competition all across the line. That is what builds beasts - knowing you have to go at it every practice to keep your job.

If you look back at Bishop, Step, Olivea and Clarke you had talent out of HS that matches anyone we have on board right now. But there was nobody behind them. Nobody to push them. The result was a sometimes unmotivated, sometimes overweight line that never met its potential.

The other argument that I would make for the turn around as last season unfolded was the rumored increase in involvement of Peterson in coaching the OL. If this guy can do here what he did at a MAC school - watch out.

And apparently everyone has been raving about Cordle as well even though he seems a bit small to me at 275.

IIRC, there was camp talk about Cordle pushing Mangold for PT, and maybe even moving Mangold over to guard so that both Cordle and Mangold could be on the field at the same time...

Yep there was tons of talk about Cordle stealing the C position... who knows how much was raving about his ability vs. actually considering him there over mangold.

I think our line will be good enough. I don't think we're going to steamroll over teams with the running game. We couldn't do it to Michigan once we got past our own 30, and I doubt we do it to texas. However, they were much better in pass blocking.

One thing that will help the OL is that our offense will surely feature plenty of misdirection and trickery, keeping the DL at bay somewhat. There are too many speed weapons we can use if they overpursue in one direction.

Excited about the O line! Rehring at LT!!

Today's Dispatch:

I'm excited that Rehring has obviously impressed the coaches enough to get the nod at LT. I think Sims at guard is a going to provide a huge boost to the rushing game.

Rehring surprised by depth chart

Steve Rehring entered Ohio State’s preseason camp raring to go this week. The fact that he saw his name at the top of the depth chart at left tackle just added to his zip.

"That’s the first time I knew about it," the sophomore said yesterday at the Buckeyes’ annual photo day in Ohio Stadium. "It helps my confidence, I’m ready to go, and not worrying about anything but playing now."

Most observers had projected Rob Sims to be No. 1 at left tackle, with Rehring backing him up, and Doug Datish at left guard. But offensive coordinator Jim Bollman said if there was a game today, Rehring would be the left tackle, Sims would be the left guard, Nick Mangold the center, T.J. Downing the right guard and Kirk Barton the right tackle.

The 6-foot-8, 326-pound Rehring entered school in time for spring drills in 2004 and played more and more as last season progressed. His improvement continued through the spring, Bollman said.

"Now it’s my job to hold on to, and to solidify, and say, ‘This is my job, and I’m keeping it the next three seasons I’m here,’ " Rehring said.

D’Andrea update

D’Andrea said his appeal for a medical redshirt for 2004 is based on a possible misdiagnosis of his knee injury. D’Andrea tore knee ligaments in practice the week before the team’s fourth game, Oct. 2 at Northwestern. He played in the game before sitting out the rest of the season.

"What we’re going for is trying to hopefully get a little lucky," he said of his appeal. "I wasn’t totally positive it was torn (before Northwestern). It’s kind of a misdiagnosis-type thing."

NCAA bylaws on medical hardship waivers allow a player to play in two games or 20 percent of a season. D’Andrea would appear to be over the limit even if the NCAA accepts his argument.

NCAA spokesman Kent Barrett said there is some latitude in granting a waiver, "but it would have to be fairly extraordinary circumstances to bypass normal (NCAA) rules."

D’Andrea said he hopes to learn his fate in a month. He said he can wait; he still hasn’t been cleared for full contact.

Call him Cyber-Tressel

Coach Jim Tressel will launch his own Web site, coachtressel.com, on Aug. 29. The site is owned by Ohio State but is being developed by m2 marketing, a company co-founded by former OSU linebacker Ryan Miller.

Tressel said, "This will be a Web site that talks about Ohio State football from the standpoint of maybe deep within that (newspapers) don’t have inches to cover and TV doesn’t have moments to cover. Our fans, they want it 24/7."

This could be potentially huge. I have been waiting for someone to be deemed by the coaches as dependable enough to take over LT for Sims so he could move to guard, where he will be awesome. Mr Pittman, Haw, and Wells should be smiling brightly right about now. i know i am.
