Notre Dame (football only discussion)

I don't quite understand this, Notre Dame continues to have one of the highest graduation rates among Division I schools, still strives for academic excellence, yet DiNardo sees the large coaching salary as ND putting football first...perhaps hes jealous he wasn't offered the position as an Alumni like Weis? I'm not sure if hes aware or not, but a huge, new Science building was just built last year with some amazing, state of the art technology. A lot of the money for that building came from donations from Alumni and fans, but part of it was funded through the football program as well.

The way I see it, football is one of the biggest traditions surrounding ND history. Even when the team has crappy years, you can't think ND and not think about football. Football generates huge revenues for the university and brings many great student athletes in. I'm not saying that football coaches don't make a ridiculous amount of money sometimes, but often times they do give that money back to the community or part to charity. Its also kinda tough to offer any coach peanuts to coach a college program after being in the NFL. Weis gets paid a lot, but the university saw that the football program has been embarrassing since the mid 90s. They thought Weis could turn the program around. While a bowl win has not yet come, the team is playing a little better and much better talent is coming in through recruitment.

I guess the bottom line is that at ND, football has always been a big part of the school, and I can't imagine it ever won't be. Academics have always been a top priority as well, and I don't see that changing either.

Steve19, move this or delete it........

When the 'Big One' hits (that's an earthquake, folks) here in California, my hope is that it's at halftime between Notre Dame and USC. That's all.

:gobucks3: :gobucks4: :banger: (couldn't resist). LSU will hang about 6 tds on the Domers, (Dryden is a bit too conservative  ), and Charlie 'Cheeseburger' Weis will complain that the officials took over the game........

Methinks that USC will find out that Meatchicken's got some spunk, and they're not as good as their press clippings say, and it'll be at least a two td spread (Meatchicken's favor).

Just for the record....after South Florida's win in their bowl game, this little factoid came from the announcers: 83 different teams have won bowl games since the last time Notre Dame won one.

And I think San Jose State might be the 84th.

San Jose State made it 84! This should be NDChief's sig line: 84, and counting, different teams have won a bowl game since the last time Notre Dame won one.

They actually can make it 86. Central Michigan made it 85

We can actually get to 87, if Houston and Rutgers both win theirs. And if Notre Dame loses again, as seems likely, Western Michigan and Ohio have their shot at bumping it to 89.

Almost makes those bowl games worth watching. Oh wait, no it doesn't.
