Notre Dame (football only discussion)

As far as Joe goes, not really sure what's been going through his head lately. By all accounts I hear he's a complete dick in person, but I've never met him so I'll reserve judgement. He's been distancing himself from the university imo the last few years. I don't know if it has anything to do with the fact that his son didn't make the cut at QB, but Nate at least got a chance. Nate's a good kid, don't have any problems with him. My cousin went with him to a dance freshman year, she said he was a nice guy.

Pinkett's comments...pretty shocked. While I do feel your team needs an edge to win, I don't feel like you need criminals to achieve this. Certainly there are better examples of teams with criminals than OSU (I'm looking at you, Miami). Selling goods for tattoos isn't even against the law, just NCAA regulations. To be honest, I haven't cared for Pinkett announcing for the Irish, I miss Tony Roberts. He was the voice of the Irish for 26 years, and was unceremoniously let go after the '07 season I think. He stated for a long time that he would love to return, I don't know if that was the case. It's tough to hear the commentary over the background music, but this was the energy he brought to the broadcast booth:

If Pinkett was going to use the term "criminal," he could have at least chosen a decent school. Like...USC?

August 30, 2012, 7:30 PM ET LOS ANGELES -- Linebacker Simione Vehikite is back with the USC Trojans after a jail stint and is back on scholarship, USC coach Lane Kiffin announced Thursday. Vehikite was recently released from jail after being ordered in May to serve a year following a 2011 car accident. He pleaded no contest to leaving the scene of an accident and driving at or above the legal blood-alcohol content and was ordered to pay restitution to the victim in the accident among other punishments.

Driving drunk, injured a person in the process, then fled the scene of the crime. Does 3 months of a 1 year jail term, was released earlier this week, and he's already back on the team and will be available for the Hawaii game this weekend. Holy ****. Not to mention USC took a player, Will Andrew, off scholarship to make room for Vehikite. Thats pretty bad.

Notre Dame didn't offer an apology for killing one of its own students and driving a young woman to suicide by protecting a football playing rapist. You seriously think they'll issue an apology because one of their own badmouthed Ohio State?

No, no, no, I never expect those who claim to be of high ethical and moral standards to actually act in a high moral and ethical way......that's just crazy talk....

I was pretty shocked actually that Floyd didn't receive at least a 1 game suspension. Despite just being charged with DUI, the potential for injuring someone is always there. As recent as 2005 Notre Dame has suspended players 6 games or more for DUI (Rashon Powers-Neal being the most recent I can recall), and Floyd had a previous run in with underage drinking.

That being said, theres a higher level of offense here. Vehikite had the DUI, injured an individual, and fled the scene of the crime. I understand the guy did time, 3 months of a 1 year sentence, but he just got out of the pen this week and he'll be dressed for the game. To top it off, he's been given the scholarship of another player. That wasn't his call of course, but it's kind of low on USC's part. Would they really have needed him for Hawaii? I'm saying that USC could have at least pretended they don't condone actions like this.

What any college (and I include my beloved OSU) program does with regards to making bad actors eligible no longer surprises me. Likewise the shocked and angry reactions of fans when the NCAA clamps down and does what the schools themselves often fail to do- like BWI now, and BP just a year ago- are pretty universal. We do get into a living-in-a-glass-house-and-throwing-stones environment.

BUT Notre Dame announcers throwing stones while the school manages to suppress investigation into suicide, a student's death in a wind storm, more than a few incidents of player misconduct, smacks of hypocrisy.

And I'll not even mention what happens to announcers- say, maybe, Chris Collinsworth- when they dare say anything negative about Irish on-field performance.

Former Notre Dame quarterback Joe Montana criticized current coach Brian Kelly for changing his mind on the starting quarterback. Montana obviously isn?t enamored of current choice Everett Golson.

?Kelly can?t figure out what he wants,? Montana wrote in a chat with ESPN.com. ?Every one of his QBs that he has, he claims is his next star, but he doesn?t last long with him. (Golson) is probably the least talented thrower that they have, so maybe they?re looking to run the ball with him.?

I just can't get over the fucking ridiculousness of this piece by Pat Forde considering that ND'S COACH KILLED A STUDENT.

I'll take lowering admission's standards for football players and a coach lying about NCAA violations every day of the week.

Read...

This is what happens when you accuse a notre dame football player of sexually assaulting you

...and the original article it was in response to:

Reported Sexual Assault at Notre Dame Leaves More Questions Than Answers

That's all you need to know about ND and it's celebrated integrity.

First off, every university lowers admissions standards for football players. I remember reading that Stanford had the highest incoming SAT average among Division 1 teams at around 1280. Impressive, until one realizes that's probably around 250 points lower than the average incoming freshman score overall at Stanford. Even the Ivy League has a complex point system formula for getting athletes accepted.

They may not take a kid with a 920 that gets offered by Ohio State, Michigan or Wiscy. To say, however, that ND football players have the same incoming scores as the overall ND freshman class is complete fucking bullshit. If they did, you god damn know that ND would release those numbers every year and rub the rest of college football's nose in it.
