Notre Dame (football only discussion)

What the hell is the LOL for? So you're dining with your parents, get up to leave, and somebody punches you in the face because they don't like the way your team plays a game on Saturdays.

Disgusting.

Fans punching kids, - college kids, - takes this sport to new lows. And you're laughing about it?

I think the humor is derived from the fact that Notre Dame is in such a state of turmoil that a fan would feel compelled to punch the starting quarterback in the face. The actual punch isn't funny, what motivated the punch is.

Having fun with the idea of a fan giving Clausen a black eye is light years from the low point of this board.

There were tons of jokes when a UM player hit a kid with a bottle or a PSU player pulled out a machete. And we have been relentless in attacking a man who has a life threatening weight problem.

I don't think any of us are genuinely condoning this action.

That said, the sand alone laughing emoticon sends an ambiguous message.
What do a UM player throwing a bottle, a UM player masturbating on a porch, and PSU player wielding a machete in a cafeteria all have in common? The players committed the action themselves.

Why do sloths like Charlie Weis and Mark Mangino warrant criticism for their waistlines? Because they brought it upon themselves.

A fan attacking an athlete, even if its the spikey-haired-douche that QBs Notre Dame, just because the team isn't doing well is not funny. If a fan punched Michael Shaw (or Mike Hart, or Chad Henne, or any other U-M football player, past or present) merely because of the team they play for, I would not think that'd be humorous either.

It's disgusting. American CFB fans are stooping to lows usually reserved for European or Latin soccer hooligans.

Who is to say he didn't bring it on himself. I find it very hard to believe he was sitting there talking about what charity he was going to donate all of his NFL salary to, when out of nowhere a heathen walked up and punched him in the face.

And even if Clausen was sitting there minding his own business, he still brought it on himself.

Having taught in Catholic Schools for 27 years (as a public school employee) and having been a member of Bellarmine Chapel on Xavier's campus, I can tell you that the Jesuits are not afraid to tell the heirachy just where to get off. We still receive "Company" a Jesuit monthly mag and it's not afraid to support Obama or other liberal politicians/causes. While I acknowledge that there were many Catholic students, parents and alums who reacted negatively to some of the "liberal" actions the university has taken, there are also many who support them.

Interesting.... Im definatly not in the loop... my parish is conservative, Ironically its really young including the clergy who have been quick to point out a difference in philosophy to many of the older diocesan Priests who have "misinterprited vatican 2".... not from the pulpit but... maybe ill pm you im :topic:

Tell that to the kid that got clocked by the bottle. By your reasoning, the guy that sucker punched Emu threw the punch by himself, so no big deal, right?

He's saying that Jackson chose to strike the 'kid' with the bottle. Jimmy didn't choose this skirmish.

That's not his point at all.

Depending on how somebody wants to write the story, he was either "dining with his parents" or "leaving a bar after midnight".

I'd like to hear some more about the situation, including the version from the guy that threw the punch.

The difference here is that the famous person was the victim in the Emu scenario whereas in the Marlin Jackson sceanrio the famous person was the culprit. Not mention that one is simple assault and the other is felonious assault with a dealy weapon. And we don't know whether Emu instigated (i.e., "chose") this or not. We've seen his smug, smart-assed attitude on TV more than once...wouldn't be surprised if he indeed did ask for it.

I don't actually think it was Clausen - in the news report, it said the victim was with a woman - must be mistaken identity.

I agree that him getting sucker punched is not humorous in and of itself. A physical attack on anyone is never warranted. I would bet that there is more to this story, though. The ESPN article says that it was a "fan" that did it, but provides no information as to what the motive was (being "irate" isn't specific enough), or even who "the fan" was a "fan" of...

What surprises me is the speed with which people rush to judgments. All we know is that Clausen appears to have been exiting a bar with some family members after midnight, gotten in a fight, and picked up a bit of a shiner.

Did someone sucker punch him? If so, everything Dryden says makes perfect sense.

Did some fan shout something like, "Notre Dame sucks" and Clausen threatened to kick his arse. Did Clausen steal some guy's girlfriend...or his money...or whatever, and the punch had nothing to do with football? Did he employ his emu mind chant and break the other guy's arm? The righteous indignation may be not so well placed in situations such as this.

I'd prefer to wait and let the whole story come out before forming any kind of opinion about the person who clocked him.

They have now released details of the alleged culprit. African-American, approximately 55 years old, about 5-9, 165 pounds. Hair beginning to grey and thinning. Sporting a mustache.

:paranoid:

After reading about him in the Cali state championship game and at his signing extravaganza, nobody wanted the emu to fail more than me. Turns out he's toned down his act and become a damned good quarterback. Also, unlike BQ, he can take a couple of shots to the chin and keep his head in the game. The emu's earned my respect.
