NoSuch Dame LB Manti "Snugglebunny" Te'o (official imaginary thread)

PSU's ethics involved the coverup AND the raping of children for decades. It happened inside of PSU, because of PSU and was protected/renewed by PSU.

Your season-stripping ethics revolve around a fictitious girlfriend and a web of lies that spanned 4 months.

What about that is remotely similar?

What about that is damaging?

You're making an enormous leap to compare two embarrassing situations with many lies. Those two things don't erase the gigantic difference between what they were hiding.

School officials don't strip their schools of entire seasons every time they lie or sit on something. Devastating sanctions only hit when the crime being committed (NCAA or legal) is major enough to warrant harsh punishment.

We don't know all the facts yet, but it is possible Manti raped his imaginary girlfriend.

I'd say it was consensual. I think most of the board is probably familiar with the imaginary money shot. I for one, never felt like it was rape.

(not to mention I covered this angle already, Kyle!)

My thoughts exactly. No, it's not. That's the core of this scandal. You're trying to make the cover-up into the smoking gun so that there's some comparison to PSU.

Show me some examples of programs that were stripped of entire seasons for lying. Teams get nailed for doing things wrong, and then have that punishment increased for lying about it. You're calling for them to nuke an entire season for doing nothing of consequence and then lying about it for 4 months.

What exactly did they accomplish by that lie? A mild amount of sympathy and a feel-good story?

I can think of a coach that got a 5-year show cause penalty from the NCAA for basically not forwarding a couple of emails, and then signing an NCAA form that said he wasn't aware of any violations. And that certainly was a huge part of the reason for the 2010 season being vacated.

I don't see a situation where No Dame would be forced to vacate wins over this mess, but I think it would be just for Te'o to lose most of the individual awards he received, which were largely due to the sympathy story and the ND media feeding frenzy over it.

Yeah I'm not seeing it...I mean, say for example they were all in on it, and it was a mass Notre Dame conspiracy. Fine...but where is the crime? Where is the victim? Where is the competitive advantage? They got plenty of media grease, but so did Tim Tebow...but that still didn't throw a jump pass or run a ball in for a TD for him. I see where it would be a despicable attempt to, I don't know, grow the fan base? Generate publicity? Encourage donations? But I don't see how it affected NCAA competitive balance, and I don't know how "ethics" would come into play when there was no victim.

More deserving players missed out on significant national awards, although it's difficult to prove that Te'o wouldn't have won them without the media circus regarding the dead 'girlfriend'. And those awards have value (at the very least, they can be traded for tattoos :tongue2:), so I could see ambulance chasers like Gatorubet trying to convince participation in civil suits by Clowney, other defensive players, and Manziel (who missed out on the Maxwell and the Walter Camp).

ND should suffer no NCAA penalties.... IMO, but they should suffer some huge PR hits because they admit to knowing something was fishy DEC 26th. It should have taken them all of 2 hours to realize this woman was fake. So everything after the point... They knew about it and allowed the national media to continue the fake stories is on them. They did nothing to stop.... slow... or even try to fix the run away train.

In this age of the internet and cell phones that are glorified computers.... there is zero chance that a guy dates a person for 3 years and doesn't see them face to face, even if its over the net. I just won't ever buy no matter what is said that he wasn't in on it from the start.

Some fault goes to the national media though for not doing there research on this story. If it was a side note in one game, never to be revisited.... ok, but this story was so central to ND's whole season. This is yet another example of how pathetic our media has become these days. What ever happened to researching a story and giving the facts for folks to digest and form there own views on things. (sorry getting off point there)

If we're handing down punishments for such trivial lies, then there will be a lot of punishments handed down for inflated tackle statistics.

Then there's the matter of coaches lying or hiding what a player did wrong to get suspended, or worse yet, what he did to earn internal punishment but no loss of game time.

It's a slippery slope for such a minor crime against humanity.

Because the thing he was hiding would make his players ineligible. The thing ND was hiding would make them a target of jokes.

I agree and could definitely see a Heisman disappearing over this. I could see an individual award choosing to strip him of it, though I doubt the NCAA would force them to do so.

Those were ways he gained from the lie. I don't see any effect on their wins or on-field performance, especially given the way the media adores ND any time they awake the echoes.

The sole comparison to PSU is that the NCAA could use the ethics clause to punish the university for something that's not a specific NCAA violation.

Like something of this precedence has ever happened.

We forfeited an entire season because of our head coach lying. We also lost scholarships for three years and was banned from post-season play for Tressel's one lie.

Talk about tin foil hat. "Mild amount" of sympathy? :slappy:

That's the true scandal here. We have entertainment organizations masquerading as news outlets. We needed the nerdy version of TMZ to do the hard hitting investigation into the face of the CFB season.

It reminds me of The Colbert Report episode lately where they interviewed the former CNN investigative journalist who lost his job because CNN closed down their in-depth investigation unit. They later asked a big wig at CNN why that was done and the answer was basically that in depth stories far away are boring and not cost effective. Drumming up emotions over local stuff is interesting and drives ratings.

The former investigative journalist now scours the news for real life leads that a fictitious TV news show can use as a basis for their stories

I'm just disappointed that this never reached Te'o and Sports Illustrated killing off imaginary children.

I was upset that they never had a child that could now grow up without his mother.

Seeing as Ped State had to violate a buttload (pun intended) of victories to to its handling of the Sandusky scandal (violating an NCAA ethics clause), could No Dame end up vacating all the games in which Te'o played from the time he "met" his "girlfriend"?

I'm afraid to ask how you violate a buttload of victories....

Laughable. They lost it because they got caught cheating and hiding that those players should've been ineligible, then proceeded to dig a deeper grave by lying about the cheating.

They didn't lose a season because Jim Tressel told some lies about Terrelle Pryor's girlfriend.
Talk about tin foil hat.
Raise your hand if you agree with Mili. Anyone?
