Next Generation Console News: Xbox One, PS4, Wii U

The idea of watching friends games live is awesome... specifically for NCAA leagues and the like.... There were a few times I wished I could see other users games... I can't wait to see how MS responds..

I think this feature is going to be a fail. Most games have enough server problems the way it is and now ps4 wants to stream the content? Good luck with that.

But will it be the viewers on the game server? Could it be a way they just go through the players system?

This feature will be sweet for any sports league with user games...

I didn't read any of the press release. So this is all a guess. If you can only watch it if you're connected to the same network (what's the point of that?), my guess is the ps4 and your home network will do the broadcasting. If you can watch over the internet from a different house the quality won't be that great. Ex. A stream of a UFC fight, those always look like shit.

I was talking a few months ago with my brother if they ever would build in a capture card system and or for the use of live streaming. I guess so. Lol. I now now have a 200$ capture card thats obsolete. That is as long as Xbox follows suit. Stands to reason as a few months back Microsoft revised and updated their policies on live streaming their game contents and youtube rules and legalities.

Used games won't be blocked, according to Sony.

I'm leaning PS4 unless the new XBox doesn't block used games, as well.

Microsoft won't block used games. That whole rumor is just awful and makes no sense at all for console makers.

I am sure I will end up getting the next XBox for 2 reasons. 1) I prefer the Xbox controller and 2) when it comes to similar products I always choose the American company.

Of course I own a Wii, XBox360, and a PS3 right now. At some point I will probably own all 3 of the new consoles too.

if Sony isn't doing it, no way MS will be that stupid to do it, it would absolutely kill their sales as anyone on the fence would go to PS4 (including myself)

What's still a rumor? They said yesterday that the PS4 you will be able to watch your friend play the game or even take it over for them

I will run my capture card with my Directv at that point to snag movies, UFC's, etc that I don't want to keep on my DVR forever.....

Maybe Sony will actually supply competent servers unlike Electronic Arts.

What am I missing? I am not impressed....

[ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rGlu3e9kdks"]PlayStation 4 Demo of Killzone: Shadow Fall - YouTube[/ame]

Sure it looks fine for a video game, but this doesn't appear to be out of the PS3 league.

It's not just graphics and of course the increase in polygon count, especially in just 1 image. Advances in tech allows for much more detail in the entire environment (ever notice how there is still 2D stuff in games that look like crap even while the main character looks good?). On top of better hardware, there are things like tessellation (which technically existed before but took up tons of resources). Here is a simple example of the benefit DX11 with better hardware will do over simple bump mapping you see in games today....

Here is another example of what tesselation can do...

Lighting is another thing that is greatly improved with DX11 and new hardware vs. old hardware and DX9.

There is also one thing that has always annoyed me in video games. Circles and cylinders often do not look like circles and cylinders (unless they decided to use a ton of resourced to make it look more round). With DX11 and better hardware, cylindrical objects are able to be made realistic instead of looking like polygons.

Other major areas that are not just graphics are advanced AI (more processing power means less idiotic NPC's), physics (GPU's now have dedicated physics processing that will open up all kinds of gameplay and visual effects), faster load times, and of course multitasking abilities through more processing cores. There is more that I am probably missing.

You also have to take into account the current gen of games for consoles have been through a very long development cycle where the abilities have been maxed. To see the true improvement you really have to go back to the start of the current gen cycle and look at those graphics. The new generation is only at the start, and very few developers have even begun to work with all the tools DX11 and the new hardware provides.

Overall you can't really expect massive visual quality jumps like we saw in the past. After all, visuals can only get so good. Yet there will be some major increases in not only overall visuals, but also gameplay and the overall experience.
