PS1 games launched at $50 and went to $40 at the end of the PS1 life cycle. I think that is what skews people's ideas on game prices (PS1 games were really cheap at the time). Yet before that games at $60 was not uncommon in the early 90's. Game prices have completely stagnated, especially when you take inflation into account. Gaming has never been cheaper.

Unfortunately, Nintendo's decision to go with the cartridge format instead of CDs turned out to be a serious liability. The production cost of manufacturing N64 cartridges was extremely high compared to pressing Playstation and Saturn CDs, as computer chips were an expensive commodity. Consequentially, N64 titles regularly entered the market at an astounding $70-$80 price point, which was unheard of at the time (and still is).
