Next Generation Console News: Xbox One, PS4, Wii U

lots of talk next gen games could sell for $69.99

60 was bad enough and overpriced, now they wanna raise it 10? Not buying a console if that's what they end up doing

If they try that garbage in addition to banning used games, they will send a ton of gamers to the PC world, where most titles drop precipitously in price after 3-6 months.

There they capitalize on the gamers that buy early, then still profit from the late adopters who buy when the price matches the game's value.

Just to follow up on game prices, I have no idea how old you guys are but games are very cheap these days. N64 games were crazy expensive and before that games were often $40 to $60. Here is just a point in time for game prices in 1997...

PS1 games launched at $50 and went to $40 at the end of the PS1 life cycle. I think that is what skews people's ideas on game prices (PS1 games were really cheap at the time). Yet before that games at $60 was not uncommon in the early 90's. Game prices have completely stagnated, especially when you take inflation into account. Gaming has never been cheaper.

Sorry but I don't remember paying $60 for a new game for my PS1, N64, or PS2 even (maybe ps2)

Almost 27...I remember 64/PS1 games being $40 new

Unless you were blowing the clerk or bought old N64 games, they were not $40. I actually provided a link. PS1 games at launch were $50 and went to $40 at the end of the life cycle, yet PS1 games were cheap in comparison to the past. Cartridge games were way more expensive to make.

This is one thing I hate about video games. People complain about the price and then completely forget what games used to cost. Hell, I remember Atari and Intellivision games that cost a ton. $20 back in the 80's was a hell of a deal, and $40 was the norm if not more.

I am the opposite of the old fogey. Games didn't cost less back in my day. They were freaking expensive as hell.

PS2 was not $60. I did not claim that. PS2 was $50. PS1 was $50 at launch and actually went down to $40 near the PS2 launch. As for the N64, those were expensive as hell. I can't believe people forget that.

Another link...

Unfortunately, Nintendo's decision to go with the cartridge format instead of CDs turned out to be a serious liability. The production cost of manufacturing N64 cartridges was extremely high compared to pressing Playstation and Saturn CDs, as computer chips were an expensive commodity. Consequentially, N64 titles regularly entered the market at an astounding $70-$80 price point, which was unheard of at the time (and still is).

I remember having a $25 gift certificate back in the late 80's and having to settle for one of the crappy "Bases Loaded" baseball games for NES because the "RBI" series was too expensive.

This was the epitome of bad-ass-ness:

Whooooooaaaaaaa! Pump your motha flipping brakes! Bases Loaded had the third batter, Paste, charge the mound if you hit him with a pitch. Epic!

Edit: He was New Jersey's team.

I believe every team had a guy you could bean and they would charge the mound. You also could tap a button over and over again while he charged the mound (I forget which one) and he wouldn't get thrown out of the game.
