I don't want or need your pity. This is the whiff I expected. Your ignorance of Nebraska as an academic institution is apparent. You know what you can read off Wikipedia, and that's to be expected.
Oh darn I missed this...
The ignorance displayed was by Harvey Perlman who displayed his absolute incompetence in delivering Nebraska's 'defense' to the AAU. The COP/C outlined to him exactly how to present the case and instead he decided to walk in with a chip on his shoulder and piss off the very people who were holding Nebraska's membership in their hands. The votes that were lost at the last minute were not Big Ten schools with a grudge...they were schools that were turned off by Perlman's attitude.
The PtB in the Big Ten were aware of Nebraska's tenuous hold within the AAU. However they also felt that Nebraska's removal was very unlikely if Nebraska played the cards correctly. They certainly wanted Nebraska's continued membership & went out of their way to assist the school. That is why the letter was sent in the first place. If Perlman had just followed the COP/C's advice instead of channeling Pelini at a presser...Nebraska would still be a member of the AAU today.
If the stunt had occurred a couple of years prior Nebraska would not now be in the Big Ten.
You misunderstand where the burden of proof lay. The onus was upon your University to provide the metrics showing what strides had been made and what foundation was being laid for future improvements in the areas that needed strengthening...instead your Chancellor essentially spit in the voters faces telling their criteria was wrong.
I reiterate...if Harvey Perlman had just given a non-antagonistic presentation discussing the strides Nebraska had made and was on track to make in the future...Nebraska would still be a member of the AAU.
I have never looked Nebraska's Wiki article.
I have however actually looked at the actual indicators that the AAU weighs for membership. I've also discussed what happened at length with my Alma mater's rep who was present for the presentation, the vote and the rest of the events surrounding the meeting. The general feeling was one of shock at Perlman's behavior throughout the couple of days over which the meeting was convened.
Perlman burned a lot of bridges over that period and his actions are almost solely responsible for Nebraska's ouster rather than the conspiracy theories being trotted around in UNL circles...the AAU looks down on land grant schools (7 of the Big Ten AAU members are Land Grant Universities), Nebraska's medical school isn't under the same charter (Purdue and 1 or 2 other Big Ten AAU members do not control medical schools) that the AAU doesn't respect Ag research (Ohio State, Penn State, Purdue & Wisconsin are all major Ag research schools).
