NCAA punishes USC - Reggie Bush, OJ Mayo, Dwayne Jarrett, Joe McKnight investigation

Gatorubet;1727958; said:
Glad you archived that. It is a facinating read. I did not follow it that closely at the time, other than thinking that Mo C was not the best source - given his problems. But the thought was also formed that there must be some fire to that smoke.

That is the problem with allegations if you do not follow the low key retractions as closely as the high profile ticker headlines - you get this vauge recollection of something that is not true.

[Rant]

That period was when I soured on that phrase for life. So many ESPN talking heads said that phrase about tOSU, without really saying anything else.

Q to TH#1 - "What's your opinion about the alleged issues at tOSU?"

TH#1 - "I'm not sure, but where there's smoke, there's fire."

Q to TH#2 - "What's your take on the story?"

TH#2 - "Where there's smoke, there's fire."

Q to TH#3 - "Any comments about the tOSU situation?"

TH#3 - "One thing I believe, where there's smoke, there's fire."

Viewing public - "Well, shit. There's so much smoke, there must be fire."

Don't do any real investigative journalism, just parade a bunch of talking head idiots who know almost nothing about the situation, and have slimeballs like Tom Friend find some disgruntled ex-players to say something inflamatory in response to a leading question, and then the casual viewer assumes that the program is almost as bad as the SMU program prior to the Death Penalty.

I even suspect that the smoke/fire reference was a scripted talking point on some of the ESPN shows back then.

It's why I still loathe that phrase to this day.

I stopped visiting ESPN.com because of that mess. I subscribed to The Magazine and had every single issue going back to the first one until this shit went down. Canceled my subscription and haven't looked back. I wish I could say the same for television and radio, but if you care about sports at all there's really no way around those.

The only thing I watch on ESPN or its conglomerate are actual games. I sometimes give College Game Day a chance, and sometimes I make myself watch the CGD studio team just so I can have something to write about when doing game previews... but, other than that, ESPN, etc.. is a non factor in my life.

That said, I can be caught listening to ESPN radio from time to time - but nowadays, it's really just the local guys on my drive home rather than Cowherd and the like.

I don't know if the ESPN v. Ohio State war was the cause, or if that's just about the time I realized they didn't really have a lot of valuable things to say about anything. I guess what I mean is - back in the day, Kilbourne, Patrick, Eisen, etc. had a pretty funny thing going on. They delivered sports highlights with a nice flair... maybe it was my age, or maybe they really were good... I don't know... but.. in my view, at some point they (and I mean the channel, as represented by its individual personalities) just became caricatures of themselves. Too much "look at me, aren't I the hippest?" and not enough sports.

I was also quite put off by the self styled fellatio they constantly ran with their 25 year anniversary.

everyone who leaves seems to be a "flunk out" "overrated" or "we didnt need him anyway"

They will never admit it, but that saga changed ESPN also. If USC happened in '04, I believe they get the same treatment tOSU received.
Agreed100%. ESPN learned from that episode and does not handle allegations that way anymore. People always look at that period and suggest that there's some bias against tOSU but that's not the case....they simply learned from that event. USC received better treatment because of lessons learned.

The great irony of course being is that they rushed to be judge, jury and hangman in Ohio State's case when the NCAA investigation ultimately showed no wrongdoing, and they treated SC with kid gloves whereas the ultimate NCAA investigation ended up with harshest sanctions being handed down since the SMU death penalty.

It wasn't your age, Kilborn especially and Patrick and others were talented, cared about their delivery and had a certain wit that is lacking today. ESPN offers less and less of that today.

Scott Van Pelt is one of the rare exceptions to that rule, and he's more of a refreshing contrast to the others than an equal of those guys. I enjoy him on TV & radio, but that was a rare bunch, which should include Kenny Mayne as well.

They've replaced style & wit with instigation (Screamin A, Bayless, May, Holtz) & parrots (Palmer, Herbie, Jackson).

looks like another on the way out

Touted junior college prospect Glen Stanley awaits release from USC, considers Florida State – Chopping Block – Seminoles Blog – Orlando Sentinel

The Glen Stanley saga doesn?t seem to be progressing. Chris Hays, our recruiting editor at the Sentinel, wrote a good, detailed story that came out earlier today about Stanley?s situation. Stanley, of course, is one of the top junior college prospects in the nation. An Ocala native and former UCF commitment, Stanley spent the past two seasons at Eastern Arizona College in Thatcher, Ariz.

He committed to USC but has been seeking his release in the aftermath of the serious sanctions the NCAA levied against the Trojans football program. USC recently released Seantrel Henderson from his commitment, but the university has not yet released Stanley. So ? he waits.

Stanley told the Sentinel:

?They haven?t gotten in contact with me directly or said anything. I tried to get in contact with the AD (Mike Garrett) and a couple guys in compliance. I actually talked to one guy [Thursday] but he couldn?t give me answers on where I stand on my release.?

Such is the latest strange detail in a strange story. Stanley, a linebacker who could also play defensive end, committed to UCF last November and had been planning to enroll there in January. He never showed, though. Then he became a Tennessee commitment. And then, after Lane Kiffin left Tennessee for USC, Stanley became a USC commitment. Which brings us to now.

Stanley again reiterated his desire to play in Florida, where he said he has in Ocala a fianc? and a 2-year-old daughter. But then there?s this wrinkle, from Kiffin. He recently spoke to the Los Angeles Times about Stanley?s case. Kiffin said, ?We anticipate Glen being here by fall camp once he was taken care of everything.?

Taken care of everything? What does that mean? Apparently, it means Stanley has some academic issues to work through. When I spoke with Stanley last week, he mentioned no such academic hurdles. And he didn?t again during another recent interview with the Sentinel.

What Stanley did say, however, is that he?d seek legal help if USC doesn?t release him from his commitment. And let?s say he is finally released. Then what? Where does Florida State figure in to his plans? He told the Sentinel this:

?Actually, FSU is not my goal, but to get closer to home. I have a family ? a daughter. I love football but I would rather be a father first and me getting back close to home is really the idea.?

That sounds all well and good ? and you have to applaud a young father for wanting to be a father first ? but if we?re being honest here, that kind of statement is probably not what micro-managing college football coaches want to hear. In any case, Stanley said he hasn?t actually had any contact with Florida State coaches, or any other coaches for that matter. And that he wouldn?t have any contact with any such coaches until he is released from his commitment at USC.

So I guess we?ll see what happens.

BuckeyePlanet does a pretty damn good job keeping me up to date on all sports as far as I'm concerned. I haven't watched ESPN all summer and haven't missed an important sports story. In fact, I would argue that I knew way the hell more about the conference expansion story from following it on here than any of the dipshits talking about it on ESPN.
