NBA Discussion (Official Thread)

Wrong. What both sides have yet to figure out is that the fans hold all the cards.

Wrong. Your analysis (as is typical in your posts) is way too superficial and simple-minded. Guess whose side the fans are on? Read back through this thread, and you'll see that the fans are on the side of the owners. So my post was, you know, right.

Pro sports in general are a disgusting business...but the NBA in particular is out of control IMO. I mean the avg salary is over $5 million...that's crazy money right there and it's not enough? Why is there a union for this kind of compensation? I always thought the unions were designed to protect the "little people" from not getting paid squat and taken advantage of by their employers? Seems like that's just not the case when you make $5 mil a year right? Now I get that the owners would then reap all the benefits, but still...let the courts fight about more important things than a bunch of overpaid dudes throwing the ball around. Just saying...

What the NBA needs is a handful of New York Yankees and a larger number of Washington Generals - not an NBA final matching Utah and Charlotte.

And if it ever gets THAT bad, I'll stop watching altogether. I enjoy the parity of the NFL - or at least the perception of it.

Not only this.. but what cracks me up.. all this fighting is supposedly over Basketball Related Income.... now go look at how much money the "super stars" make.... and tell me how much of it comes from their team and how much comes from their handlers... I mean companies and use them as spokes person... this was never about guys 8-12 on the bench this has always been about the top 15 to 20 players in the league.. I'm just surprised the little guys are allowing them to wreck their future and their income, which is likely all coming from the teams..

Yes, but few of those people were going to watch the NBA anyway. The NBA is the major sports league about which more people say, "Who cares?" than any other -- yet there are many avid fans.

A lot of midwesterners do not get the NBA. Not sure I do, on balance. But it remains a hugely popular sport, especially on the east coast. With all due respect, I don't think many of us here really understand the total dynamic of this thing.

I watched the NBA like religion in the golden years of the 80's. I have seen what it's become over the last 20 years. I remember when it was expanding, and now it has come to franchises jumping struggling markets. And yes, many of those people weren't going to watch, that was exactly my point...almost everyone who likes sports wanted an NFL season, regardless of whose "side" won the negotiations...the NBA enjoys no such luxury. I don't know that I would call it "hugely popular" anymore. It is definitely popular amongst certain segments of the coasts, but like NASCAR, its popularity is now dwarfed by what it once was.

Valid. Hugeness is in the rear-view mirror now. But lots of people still like pro hoop.

Yes, agreed...the worst rated NBA game still has more viewers than the highest rated NHL games, and the Christmas Day games in particular draw a huge crowd to the TV...so it's not like we're talking about a niche sport. There is still a big fan base...at least for now.

The owners need to find fair market value for playing in the NBA and set the salary cap there. If your highest played player in Europe only makes 5 mil a year (just a guess) why should the NBA have to pay 20+? Pay enough to get the best players in the world, but not the bloated contracts that they've been paying. Set the cap and roll back all salaries to the percentage of the cap that they received the previous season. Void all contracts and let it be up to the team to decide if they want to bring the player back. Give the teams the ability to use a franchise tag on one player every two years so that the little fish can hold onto most of their stars. I want to see the players pay for turning down the deal yesterday. Fuck them all. Let them play a year in Europe and see how much better they would have had it if they had just taken the deal. Anyone that thinks the players will get more than the offer they turned down yesterday is crazy.

Haha. The Celtics will suck because they will be another year older. Rondo looks like a six year old with a suit.

I'm really enjoying how the players are going to file an anti-trust suit just months after many of them tried to use the fact that they could simply go play in other leagues overseas as leverage. Good luck with claiming that the NBA is a monopoly when some of your players have already asserted that it is part of a viable and competitive global market.

Also, you'll notice that when the NFL players de-certified their union and threated a similar lawsuit, that none of their top players spoke of taking their talents to Canada.

I'm no anti-trust lawyer, but I'm not sure an overseas market is a defense to an American monopoly.
