Mustain & Arkansas Desperation (Merged)

Don't be surprised if he becomes a success. After all, he was the best player in the country coming out of HS (according to Parade). It's not like he doesn't have the history to be QB1 at USC. Probably not this year or next, but after a couple years in the system who knows.

This bizarre story refuses to go away.

Note that 'family friend' Teresa Prewett is not the same woman as Donna Bragg, the woman that Houston Nutt exchanged over 2,100 text messages with between November 2006 and February, 2007.

UA officials sued over e-mails

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (AP) -- A Montgomery County man has sued top University of Arkansas officials, saying the leaders didn't do enough to investigate critical e-mails sent by a Little Rock woman regarding the Razorbacks football team.

In his suit, John David Terry claims that Chancellor John White and system President B. Alan Sugg should have done more to investigate e-mails sent by Teresa Prewett, a family friend of football coach Houston Nutt.

Here's a 48-page report (pdf format) that discusses the history of the Prewett e-mails criticizing Mustain; it also includes the FOIA request information about the Nutt-Bragg text messages.

Matt Hayes: There's Nothing Left for Nutt at Arkansas

There's nothing left for Nutt at Arkansas

It's time for Houston Nutt to go. Right now -- before the long, hot days of summer and before the steaming stench of a soap opera further damages the Arkansas football program.
As much as it pains me to say this, as much as I loathe whiny players and meddling little league moms and reactionary responses, Nutt must take a buyout and walk away for the good of the program.
Too much damage has been done already.

Before we go further, let me state that Nutt annually makes my "does more with less" list. He's a fantastic motivator and has that special unwavering game-day acumen many coaches never grasp. He won't be out of work long. But there's nothing left for him in Fayetteville. He has lost the confidence of a rabid, loyal fan base. The faith of the spineless administration -- which has yet to defend him with any gusto -- is next to go. One fan recently used the Arkansas Freedom of Information Act to gain access to Nutt's cell phone records and documented calls and text messages with a 48-page magic bullet thesis, which was sent to the Arkansas board of trustees.

Last week, Nutt penned an open letter to Razorbacks fans in which he defended himself from what he called "unfounded gossip." This is a coach who won 10 games last season, who has led the Hogs to bowl games in seven of nine seasons, who is second on the school's all-time wins list.
This is also a coach grasping for something that isn't there anymore. And he has no one to blame but himself.
This time last year, Nutt sealed his fate by selling his coaching soul. He was on the hot seat and needed three key in-state recruits -- one of whom just happened to be the best prep quarterback in the country -- to soothe the masses. So he hired a high school coach to run his offense (red flag); the same guy just happened to coach the three star players (red flag) -- including that star quarterback, who once said that Arkansas would have a better chance of signing him if Nutt weren't the coach (red flag).

More in the same vein ... the bloodletting continues

Reminiscent of General Anthony McAuliffe, the Arkansas coaching staff has reacted to the lawsuit, saying:

"Nutts!".

Ark. tries to quash subpoenas in suit

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (AP) -- Attorneys for top University of Arkansas officials have filed motions to quash subpoenas in a case filed by an Arkansas fan who sued the leaders over alleged e-mail harassment of a former quarterback.

The lawsuit by John A. Terry, a university alumnus, claims that Chancellor John A. White and university system President B. Alan Sugg didn't properly investigate e-mails sent by a Razorbacks booster who was critical of former freshman quarterback Mitch Mustain.

Turmoil leaves Arkansas far from Hog Heaven

By Kelly Whiteside, USA TODAY

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. ? Sitting in a chair with a portrait of his family on the wall to his right and a wild hog head mounted on the wall to his left, Arkansas coach Houston Nutt is trying to make sense of the turmoil that has affected his family and the Razorbacks family during the last six months.

"To me this is way overboard," Nutt says during an interview in his office last week. Arkansas fans are among the nation's most passionate, as Nutt, one of their own, surely knows. But what happens when some fans investigate coaches and school officials, and one files a lawsuit to force action from those officials?

Several fans used the Arkansas Freedom of Information Act to obtain records of Nutt's university-issued cellphone. Ensuing chatter on the Internet and message boards resulted in that information becoming the basis for news reports about Nutt's personal life.

The Arkansas freedom of information act has been thrown around for a long time now. Can someone with more knowledge of the law please paraphrase what that law means in lay terms? All this law jargon is frying my brain. Thanks.

edit: Reason why I ask is, I want to know whether the law sounds reasonable or is as moronic as the DMCA.

The law basically means that any Arkansas citizen has the power to inspect the public records of any entity that receives substantial public funding from the state. Disputes, of course, arise as to what organizations are covered and what records are covered.
