EAST LANSING — The sun hit the horizon here at 7:58 a.m. on Friday.
It was followed by a daylong thunderclap in one of the grayest, darkest storms in the history of collegiate athletics.
This was a day unlike any other for Michigan State University’s athletic department. After a week of victim statements at the Larry Nassar sexual abuse sentencing brought the university, its president, and its board of trustees to a point of rationalization and often-failed penance, the repercussions of Nassar's evil poured in under the doors of the athletic department. A change in leadership atop the department was followed by two iconic coaches declaring they will not budge, all while the fog of a national news report condemning all parties from top to bottom blew into town.
There was a game, too, if that’s what you want to call it.
The phone calls began around 9 a.m. Local media members were beckoned to campus, told to scramble to athletic department offices at 1855 Place and asked not to publicize the impromptu media availability. They were not informed of the subject matter, but were told to be there by 11:00 a.m. By 10:48 a.m., the Detroit Free Press reported that athletic director Mark Hollis would be announcing his resignation after 10 years in the position. Roughly 20 minutes later, Hollis walked into a conference room and issued a statement that mentioned the “incomprehensible pain” of Nassar’s victims. Then he announced his retirement.

Wish I thought there would be a truly appropriate response to this, but I've been watching the outcomes of too many other incidents in recent years to believe that. Not sure how much longer I can enjoy watching college sports.

Ask yourself this: when was the last time Sparty had a coach with a winning record against Michigan? You have to go back to Duffy Daugherty and those great 65, 66. 67 teams to find an MSU coach who won more than two in a row against them and you wonder why administration leaves Dantonio alone?

I'll hold back on my hate till everything is out in the open. Some of this stuff seems pretty damning but that's the way the current info is presented to us.
Gotta say I'm happy with the Sparty fans I know. From what I've seen they just want all the fucked up shit cleaned out no matter where it goes.

We also have a press for a reason too. How many times would crimes have never seen the inside of a courtroom if it weren't for the press bringing them into the light?
I don't know. They certainly seem to be circling the wagons and screaming "witch hunt" over on Red Cedar, though any fanbase--including ours--is going to have that faction come out if they sense a threat to the foosball.

We saw a mild version of it during the Tressel wars. Some of the dimmer, less well moderated Ohio State boards than BP were pretty close to going off the BWI cliff in the crazy conspiracy theories they were coming up with to vindicate Tressel. Would those same people go through the same mental gymnastics to justify pedophilia or rape that they did to justify lying to the university and ncaa? Who knows. I hope not.
What seems to separate ped state was the crazy Paterno cult as well as their physical isolation and tame, subservient local press. None of that is present at Sparty, so I hope the rational voices among their alums and fans will be the dominant ones.

Umm...I seem to recall reading how Tress had thrown himself on the tracks to spare the University because of an FBI set-up. May or may not have involved someone's grandmother bound and gagged in a basement. It was in one of the alternate All In or Not threads here.

Oh, I saw it on here. The one that I remember was that he lied to the university and ncaa under fbi orders, and I think there was one where he did it to protect his players from the mafia. It just wasn't close to the dominant theme around BP, even among those who were defending JT and/or wanted him to keep his job. If something along the lines of ped state/Baylor happened here, I have no doubt that a lunatic fringe segment would emerge to proclaim the vestal virginity of Urban Meyer. I just pray that it would be relatively minor. Hopefully, we won't ever have to find out.

Actually, it was an overzealous politically motivated prosecutor feeding the media fire.
Regardless, time will tell what happened and what didn’t at MSU.
I pray for the young people who were impacted. If it turns out that the systems and organizations who are responsible for their well being failed them, then I also pray that the responsible parties have their heads in a basket when this is done.
