Michigan State Spartans (official thread)

I did my undergrad at ASU in person. Plenty of other reasons to go in-person than to see the profs if you know what I mean. However, I have done both of my Masters through distance learning. Yeah, the Discussion Boards basically suck but there is no more "I agree" and "I see your points". You have to make a substantial contribution to the discussion with a peer reviewed reference to get credit for it. That includes your own post and the responses so it's really a pain in the ass because I dont like people so much. The other issue is I'm 50 and I'm trying to discuss things with late 20's and 30 year olds half the time who might be at their first jobs. It is challenging and you still have to interact. Some courses you have to do in video so they can see you and you can interact by using your microphone. Distance Learning all depends on the instruction and course structure and yes, some classes are absolutely worthless and you should have been able to buy the book, read it, and paid $50 instead of $800! The costs of this crap is definitely another conversation.

If you are - I don't want to say smart - creative enough, you can organize all of your papers ahead of time because the rules for the papers are the same so I made a paper template where all I had to do was change my Title, Abstract and fill in my sections and references for each paper with a few tweaks here and there. Education overall is basically BS for most things and the costs are absolutely ridiculous
Well, our old friend EGG is getting raked over the proverbial coals at West Virginia (see what I did there) for cutting a whole bunch of humanities stuff and making it more career-oriented and less "learning"-oriented (or so he says). It will take years to see if that kind of model actually works for an R1 school, but it's the first time I think that the financial mismanagement of a University that size has produced a real change in the business model...we'll see what happens.

Suspended Michigan State football coach Mel Tucker misled investigator in harassment case, per report

Michigan State football coach Mel Tucker made false claims and misled an investigator in the sexual harassment case against him, according to USA Today. The report comes days after Michigan State announced it had begun the process of firing Tucker for cause. The school suspended Tucker without pay last week pending the outcome of a Title IX investigation.

USA Today reported Tucker told investigators that he recalled being home in East Lansing on April 28, 2022. That night, he made a phone call to Brenda Tracy, a prominent rape survivor and activist. She filed a complaint in December that alleges Tucker of numerous inappropriate actions, including making sexually suggestive comments about her and masturbating while she "sat frozen for several minutes" during the conversation.

Records instead show that he was in Florida, attending a charity function. He added it was "absolutely not a University-sponsored event."

The event was private and thrown by Michigan State to promote its migrant student services program. Later that night, records show that Tucker called Tracy when he was "alone in a hotel room" as he described.

Tucker said the trip was not work-related during an interview with the school's outside investigator. Tucker spent three months trying to end the investigation, according to the report. Tucker's legal team approached Tracy's attorney with a settlement proposal, which was rejected.

Months after the alleged sexual misconduct, Tracy was scheduled to visit campus for a training session with Spartans' coaches and players on July 25. Investigators found that Tucker canceled it three days prior, though he denied doing so in a statement disputing Tracy's claims.

"I never cancelled any presentation," Tucker wrote in a statement released Sept. 11. "Given a personnel change and scheduling challenges as football season approached, we merely postponed it until January 2023. She chose to file her complaint instead of proceeding with the training."

And as USA Today reported, Tucker's story had once again changed.

"That statement contradicts what he told the investigator," USA Today's Kenny Jacoby wrote. "When Veidlinger asked in his March interview if he had a role in canceling Tracy's visit, Tucker said, "Yes, absolutely I did," the report shows, and that he did not recall any discussions about rescheduling Tracy for January. Such timing would not make sense, he added, because most of his new players would not yet be on campus.

"Tucker also told the investigator why he canceled the visit, blaming it on a scheduling conflict. He said he had recently hired a mental conditioning coach, Ben Newman, who needed to implement his new program on short notice. There was limited time in fall camp, Tucker said, and he didn't want to "overwhelm" the players. He said he decided to yield the time to Newman."

Records show Newman met with the team weekly dating back to June 6, but did not hold meetings between July 15 and July 28. One of Tucker's assistants is a witness in the case and told the investigator that Tucker asked him to cancel Tracy's revisit.

EGG has moved WVA to the college of the future - I have six students in my 101 course who are high school juniors because Kentucky's legislature created a "Young Scholars Program" forcing all state colleges to permit selected students to complete their freshman year core courses prior to graduating. The battle between liberal arts and vo-ed was lost back in the 60s. Now they want to win the war between instruction and education.

BTW as far as Tucker.
I know some former players and also some wealthy donors and it is not pretty. Let’s just say he has been a hot mess for awhile. If spanking the monkey was all he did everyone would be relieved.
Lots of drinking and showing up places a mess.
I am not sure if the pressure just got to him or what but it is not pretty.
But he had been banned from a few places due to his drinking and behavior.
Crazy just crazy
And with that all said. Day must have rented a wheel barrow to haul his around because wow was that a call for that last TD. Talk about game of inches.

The MSU fan base is a hot mess.
Sadly MSU is a football program that wins the B10 about once every 25 years. But we as fans think we are a program that could win it every year. So you can see the disconnect.

The issue are many but mostly just the reason is pure numbers. Only so many 4-5 star dudes. Only so many players. So for MSU to be top shelf it is likely OSU or SCum need to be down. Which happened under Dantonio.

NW had a mini run when ND was down.

You see the theme right.

So while Tucker had the right idea. Where as there is just not enough ballers in the Midwest to support MSU and the perennial powers. He was not a good enough coach to execute the plan or coach up the squad. But trying to recruit talent rich South was a good move he just was not good enough.

Any way no chance MSU get Urban or for that matter do they have the drive to win to deal with his side issues.

Outside of OSU no one in the B10 is really trying to win a Natty. It takes some real focus and drive and sacrifice to make it happen.

As for your first point, here's some evidence to support you:
Since 2001, Michigan State is 98-83 (0.541) in the conference. That's good for 6th place in the Big Ten. (Penn State 0.601, Iowa 0.615, Wisconsin 0.650, M*ch*gan 0.661, and Ohio State 0.860). (Not counting this year's games, yet.) (It also does not count Big Ten Championship Games.)
But they do have 5 years in there with 0 or 1 loss: 2010, 2011, 2013, 2014, and 2015. That's 36-4 those 4 years. Outside of those 4 years, they're 62-79. That's crazy. 5 of 22 years they can win 90% of their games, but 17 of those years they go 0.440.
Compare that with Penn State: 3 years of 0 or 1 loss: 2005, 2008, and 2016. 23-3 (0.885) those 3 years. Outside of those 3 years, they went 88-70 (0.557). So, in 18 years of mediocre (at best) football, Penn State was still better than Michigan State was on average.
Michigan State would be a rough team to be a fan of. And I say that as a Cleveland Browns fan.

As for your second statement, are you saying M*ch*gan is not trying to win a Natty? Or Penn State? I know the Penn State fans are really angry that they haven't made it to the stage. I can only imagine that the M*ch*gan fans are still mad that they can't pass the next step.

One thing Sparty has that the Pedsters don’t is a playoff appearance. They did absolutely nothing with it, but in the B1G, Sparty, tOSU, and TTUN have all at least made it at least once. That’s got to grind the Pedster’s gears that they can’t even do that.

Oh, it grinds their gears more than the fact that people call them "Pedsters". (But not as much as if you called it the "Paterno Scandal".) The fact that they didn't make the playoffs in 2016, despite winning the conference and beating Ohio State (the team that DID go to the playoffs), has them angrier than a... well, I'm no wordsmith. But you get the idea. The fact that they lost 2 games (one to Pitt) isn't relevant to them.
On the same line (I know we're in the wrong thread here, but this one is hilarious), ask a Penn State fan why they didn't get a chance to win the national championship in 1994. It's because the Big Ten voters didn't vote for them. Yeah - the Big Ten has AP voters, according to them. And those voters didn't support Penn State because Penn State beat on their favorite teams, Ohio State and M*ch*gan. (And, to continue piling on, guess who would have won the championship if all of the voters in Big Ten states had voted for Penn State? Spoiler alert: Nebraska still would have won.)
