Michigan State Spartans (official thread)

Not to change the subject, and I pretty much agree with you (I grew up in Columbus, but moved to Cleveland for school and then just stayed in Cleveland after school). But what if you grow up in South Dakota or Montana? or Maine or Vermont? Are you doomed to have no college football team?
That's why that argument is dumb. What if you're from bumfuck Pennsylvania and you absolutely despise everything about Pennsylvania sports fanbases?

For those in Montana, etc. I just assume they pick the closest good program or whoever is on tv like all of the Steelers and Cowboys fans and then Patriots fans.

Just to play the other side, thoughts on guy from Lima, OH that roots for Oklahoma and NY Giants? Guy from Bellbrook, OH that roots for TCSUN, Raiders, and every other pro team out of Boston or L.A.? Guy from Cincinnati rooting for Auburn then Florida then Bama and now UGA (now a student there)?

At the end of the day I don't get it, but it is somewhat a free country. I will make fun of them though unless they are from some place with no D1 programs or they or family went to that school.

All those states have college football. Obviously not at the level that we’re primarily interested in watching, but they have teams and some of those programs have pretty passionate fans.

That's all fine and great for those guys. It's not really fair to say, "You can't be a USC fan, since you have an FCS team you could be rooting for."
Anyway, like someone else here said, it's a free country. Root for whatever team you want.

Yeah I have no issue with rooting for whoever. I mean there are fans of Alabama and Ohio state in Europe, so should they stop watching college football because they live in a place where “football” is what we call soccer?

I just felt that argument when talking about college football has some holes since those areas do have CFB teams at lower levels. I think it works perfectly though for pro sports since a good number of states don’t have teams yet the people there are fans of teams in nearby states.

Well I was more or less saying I went to MSU so I have to be a fan.

There is of course IMO a clear decision matrix/rules that can be followed and still be OK.

1- If you move somewhere you can be a fan of local teams....you live there
2- If you move somewhere you can choose to maintain fandom from where you came but you can not toggle....be a man and choose
3- if you live somewhere with no teams.....this is the slippery one. Because you must choose a team. But what often happens is people become front runners which is not acceptable. You have to at that point choose and ride it out.
4- what to do if your kid goes to or even plays for a different school......I had a daughter play softball at UM-Dearborn (NAIA level) and I told her I would root for her and wear a hat but when she was done I would be forced to burn the hat......and she understood. And I would only ever root for her team and never any other at that cess pool of an athletic department....I know it is a bit confusing as I love my daughter. Thankfully she left after a year and went to chef school so that was short lived. The point here is you do what you have to do for family but never actually change.

I am always a bit torn on the MAC grads rooting for a B10 team. But I guess you can work around the idea of big time football verses smaller division football. But it does tend to hurt my brain. IMO clearly if you went to a D2 or below you can have a D1 squad but again you need to revert to the above rules.

Additionally, if you were born in a shitty place like Penn. Well that is your sorry ass lot in life. You can of course jump but.....

I have a very good friend who grew up just South of Columbus and is a fan of SCum. So do you Buckeye fans find that OK when one of your own chooses poorly? Or do your Laissez Faire attitudes only apply to people in places where you hate the local teams? I am waiting for this answer because I think we all know your feelings about this kind of person :biggrin2: And trust me I only met him later in life. I have met his HS buddies and lets just say they are less than impressed with his choices.

I like to actually do a little bit of work instead of just blindly saying "you were born here, fuck you". That's lazy.

Here's the rules:

1. You can pick whatever the fuck team you want, as long as you have a reason for it......with at least one exception: that reason CAN NOT be "every one else liked Team A, so I picked Team A's rival." That just makes you an asshole.
2. That's your team. From now until forever.....with exceptions like your relative grows up and plays for a different team.

Otherwise, who the fuck cares, and what the fuck is it to ANYBODY ELSE? Oh no......Tommy picked the Cowboys in the 90s. He's a frontrunner. So fucking what? Now he has to root for Dak Prescot and watch Jerry Jones ruin another good team with dumbass meddling. I like the Raiders because a kid who lived down the street from me when I was 5 did. Now I'm stuck with that dumbass franchise. Who cares?

My 2 cents:
1. Agreed
2. Agreed
3. Agreed. I have a brother in law from Mississippi. He's an Auburn fan and has been his whole life. Fair enough. But my point is that he's a NY Jets fan for NFL. He said there's no NFL team near where he grew up, so he picked the Jets. And he's always been a Jets fan - that hasn't waivered. Similarly, he's a Minnesota Twins fan and a Boston Celtics fan. But yeah - pick a team and stick with it.
4. Agreed. Root for your kids/siblings/whatever. This isn't something I need to worry about. My kids have no more athletic ability than I do, so they won't be going to any suck-town teams to play. If they go to M*ch*gan, though, they just won't be welcomed back for Thanksgiving. Maybe they can come home for Christmas.
5. So this is a family discussion we have. Two uncles went to Miami (OH). The one has a son who went to Bowling Green. My brothers and I grew up in Columbus, but none of us went to Ohio State. So they root for Miami, and don't give a rat's ass about Ohio State. Their second team is UC, but they're a fan of everything Cincinnati (Bengals, Reds). But you know what? By the time I graduated high school and started college, I had already been to 40-50 Buckeye games. Even if I had gone to a MAC school, am I supposed to give up loyalty to the Buckeyes? Maybe if Ohio State was playing that team, I'd root for that team. But my cousin who went to BG - he said he went to a couple of BG games over his 4 years, but not many. He used to go tailgate and then go home to watch the Buckeyes' game. I think you got it that it isn't "Big Time", so you root for your "Big Time" team.
In Ohio, there's Ohio State, and then way down there is Cincinnati. So everyone is an Ohio State fan from birth. Then you get those shitbags who choose to buck the trend and they become M*ch*gan fans just to show the world that they're shitbags. And then there's the catholics who want to show that they're good catholics by being Notre Dame fans. But those are all not the norm. So when you grow up an Ohio State fan, you don't just stop being an Ohio State fan when you go to Ohio U or Toledo or Akron.

I have no respect for someone who grows up in Ohio and roots for SCUM. Fuck that free country bullshit.
