Powers Warren, son of Big Ten commissioner announces transfer to Michigan State

Last November, the son of Big Ten commissioner Kevin Warren entered the NCAA Transfer Portal. Powers Warren, who began his collegiate career at Mississippi State, has settled on a new destination.

Powers Warren’s decision should make his father happy, considering he will now be part of the Big Ten. Powers Warren announced Sunday via Twitter that he will be continuing his collegiate career at Michigan State.

Warren, listed as a graduate transfer, was recruited by Mississippi State as a tight end out of Minnetonka (Minnesota) Senior High School in the 2017 cycle.

He appeared in five games in 2018, following a redshirt in 2017, before making just one appearance in 2019. He did not record any stats last season for the Bulldogs, who were in their first year under head coach Mike Leach.

“I had the opportunity, when I was in the portal, to sit down over Zoom and talk to coach Mel Tucker, the head coach,” Russo said on the Ace Podcast. “And one thing he really talked about was the family atmosphere. And I’ve never been away from home. This is the furthest I’ve been. At Temple, I was 45 minutes away from campus. Here, I’m 10 hours away. So I knew, if I was going to be going a good distance away from home, I needed to find me a family away from home — a home away from home, like people say. And talking to coach Tucker, talking to our offensive coordinator Jay Johnson, I knew that was what they had here. And then, also, on top of that — I knew, my dream since I was 5 years old, was to play in the NFL. And I knew I needed to play in an offense that was similar to an NFL offense, where I’m controlling run-game checks, pass protections, all that stuff.

“And I got the chance to sit down and watch a couple of their games from last year with the offensive coordinator. He was just talking me through the different things they do and it’s a true, true NFL offense — exactly what I wanted. And then on top of that, I see all five linemen coming back, star running back coming back, two of the top receivers coming back — all these guys coming back. And then that missing piece was really a quarterback. And then the history of this program, the offense they’re running here and the atmosphere and the culture of this program, it was really a no-brainer for me. I think I was in the portal for maybe 10 days before I committed here. The more I’m here, the better it gets, man. It’s really a special place and I can’t wait to start up camp in two weeks with these guys.”

Football player suing MSU claims he was left in limbo while Title IX investigation lagged

A Michigan State University football player is suing the school, alleging it violated his rights by leaving him on indefinite suspension while it dragged its feet on a sexual assault complaint investigation involving him.

The player, identified in the suit only as John Doe, is a sophomore on a full football scholarship at MSU, according to the complaint filed Friday in the U.S. District Court's Western Michigan district.

A female student alleged he and another MSU football player sexually assaulted her in January 2021, according to the suit. The player suing the university said the sexual encounter was consensual.

The university notified the plaintiff and began investigating, as it was required to do under Title IX rules, but hasn't completed the grievance process or submitted the case to those making a final decision, the suit said.

Meanwhile, the player remains suspended from the football team and hasn't been able to practice or travel with the team, the suit said.

The player alleges his suspension from the team before a final determination is made on the sexual assault complaint is illegal. He also said MSU "has been unresponsive" to his demands that he be reinstated until the grievance process is completed.
