Michigan State Spartans (official thread)

Last question, have you ever dreamed with the speed of a cheetah?

Others may have more, but I'd appreciate your considered responses to all these things.

Oh, one more: Green or Black.

Thanks in advance.

(If this is too confusing, the ESPN boards are -- allegedly -- much easier)

No, but I have dreamed with the speed of a sloth.

I saw a green door, but I wanted to paint it black.

You're welcome.

From Sparty's standpoint, how do you give it to a guy that you might have to fire before next season even gets here. That's a risky proposition.

I guess you leave the interim tag on him but then, good luck with recruiting.

No, they have to hire someone and the timing is horrible for them. Plus sanctions could loom.

They are going to have to overpay someone. Probably Fick.

I don't know if Luke would want the job but he has no ties to MSU like Dantonio, whe served as an assistant in E. Lansing for a number of years. People just assume that since Dantonio went from OSU to UC to MSU, Fickell would be likely to do the same. Brian Kelly went from UC to ND. Fick can do better than MSU whose organization is in sort of a mess right now.

I think it's more than that. Is Fickell an "elite" coach? I, personally, don't see him as one.
And that's why MSU seems like a natural fit. It's a step up to respectable P5, but not the kind of place that expects Championships in first 2 years.
You're right though, it's gone downhill precipitously fast. Nonetheless... don't see Fickell going to, say, USC or Texas. More like Iowa. And just as well, those 2 "elite" schools would probably destroy his career.

I don't really get his outrage. We all saw this coming since last Summer ??
I guess Dantonio forgot the most important part #respectmydecision

Man, I just don't see this as a good time for Fickell to jump from juggalo to sparty. At best, Sparty is locked into being the 4th (5th?) best program in its division. At worst, they're about to get hammered by the ncaa.

Meanwhile, Fickell has UC competing for NY6 bowls. He's living in a staunchly Catholic city that's perfect for his family. There's no pressure on him other than what he puts on himself to continue to improve the juggalo program. I'm not saying he should never leave Faygoville, but I don't think this is the moment or the destination for him to do so.

The only school locked in for this Division is Ohio State.
Rutgers could knock Michigan off 3rd place -- any team with a few developed 3 stars and good coaching can do it.
Franklin's honeymoon also appears to be over and entering a period of stagnation... it took Dantonio shitting the bed in Playoffs for PSU to reclaim a distant #2. More work than supplanting scUM -- will need some recruiting momentum, but the likes of Sparty have been there before.

I love that a 28-47 mid-major coach is the 4th best bet to get this job. Makes me think they should just settle for a Narduzzi - who might actually not be a disaster for them.

Narduzzi would be the most obvious, but would he go? Maybe a lifeline if he's starting to feel heat in Pitt... but they don't seem perturbed by his performance so far.
From a situational position... ACC Coastal is recruit mode, he's already there, he may feel it's improving after a few years building his system (regardless whether it actually is), they're not facing any controversies, and they seem to have low expectations (compare to Valenti expectations).

If Sparty isn't a dumpster fire it's close. Will the NCAA come around sniffing for broken regs? They are not going to get even Narduzzi so they'll end up with some MAC level coach and have to pay them a bundle. Mike Tressel might be a good bet but what does he do with that staff? Does he do what needs to be done? Clean house?

After sleeping on MSU possibility, Pat Narduzzi says ‘I’m here at Pitt’

A day after a vacancy to be head coach at Michigan State opened up, former Michigan State defensive coordinator Pat Narduzzi said he is not a candidate for the job. Narduzzi reportedly mulled over the possibility of being the next head coach of the Spartans overnight and confirmed his commitment to the Panthers on Wednesday.

“I’m here at Pitt and I want to be here at Pitt,” Narduzzi said when speaking with the media at a signing day press conference on Wednesday (according to PGH Sports Now). “That’s where I want to be.”

Early update on the search at Michigan State

Wednesday Update. Pete Thamel (Yahoo Sports) and local Michigan State insider Hondo Carpenter have both confirmed that Michigan State has Glenn Sugiyama working this search. Sources tell FootballScoop Sugiyama approached Matt Campbell (presumably through his representatives) days ago about becoming the next head coach at Michigan State and Campbell declined the opportunity. Today is signing day so keep that in mind; but sources tell FootballScoop Luke Fickell has already evaluated the opportunity and is not inclined to jump at this time. Could that change, if following their search Michigan State officials determine they have to pay up to get Fickell?

Pitt athletic director Heather Lyke shared with reporters today that she touched base with Pat Narduzzi last night about the speculation connecting him to Michigan State and the two met again this morning and Lyke says Narduzzi told her he wants to be at Pitt. Narduzzi later shared the same sentiment, adding that he believes Lyke is the best athletic director in the country.

Yesterday we mentioned that Michigan State leadership wanted to have a diverse search. Carpenter and Thamel both confirm this below.

This morning Carpenter released a list of candidates including: Fickell, Marvin Lewis, Pat Shurmur, Pat Narduzzi, Robert Saleh, Butch Jones, Jim McElwain, Craig Bohl, Matt Campbell and Mel Tucker. Carpenter offers thoughts and insight on each here.

Thamel mentions Saleh, Mel Tucker and Chris Klieman among others.

The War Room: Go Inside The Michigan State Football Coaching Search

* Marvin Lewis is a proven coach. Strong NFL ties who had the job, but turned it down and that led to John L. Smith being handed the job. According to a member of the administration, "Lewis would be great. He has all the resume you could want and I think his NFL itch got scratched. He would be terrific."

* Pat Shurmur brings strong NFL and MSU ties. He is well-liked and respected at MSU. He is a Spartan. According to a member of the administration, "There is no drawback with Pat. He is the safest pick. Already knows everything about us (Michigan State) with an NFL resume. All camps can support him."

* Robert Saleh is a brilliant football mind, and the DC from the 49ers. A great coach as well, but no head coaching experience. Do you want a coach to come to MSU to learn how to be a head coach? Strong MSU ties, he could be an excellent hire. According to a member of the administration, "He could be special, but he wants to be an NFL head coach. There were the same concerns with Marvin Lewis, would he come and jump quick (To the NFL). I think he would. He is being pushed strongly by one trustee."

* As far as Mike Tressel keeping the job? According to two members of the administration, they shared the same sentiments. "If that happens, we crashed and burned. That can't and won't happen."

Re: sources tell FootballScoop Luke Fickell has already evaluated the opportunity and is not inclined to jump at this time.

If Fickell is out, I'll predict that Sparty will go "NFL" (and either Marvin Lewis or Pat Shurmur will be the guy) so they can claim they really "hit a home run" on their selection.

I don't totally agree. Franklin has put together pretty good recruiting classes: 2018: #5, 2019: #11, 2020: #14. They could be slightly sliding backwards there; however, I wouldn't necessarily call that "stagnation". They are still a player for the #2 spot in the B1G East. Where as Sparty is now battling Indiana for the #4 B1G East spot.
