Michigan State Spartans (official thread)

Man, I just don't see this as a good time for Fickell to jump from juggalo to sparty. At best, Sparty is locked into being the 4th (5th?) best program in its division. At worst, they're about to get hammered by the ncaa.

Meanwhile, Fickell has UC competing for NY6 bowls. He's living in a staunchly Catholic city that's perfect for his family. There's no pressure on him other than what he puts on himself to continue to improve the juggalo program. I'm not saying he should never leave Faygoville, but I don't think this is the moment or the destination for him to do so.

Man, I hope you are correct. Fickell is the best coach we've had, and I'd love to see him stick around for at least another year and maybe win a NY6 bowl.

Odds released for Mark Dantonio's replacement at Michigan State

On Tuesday afternoon, Michigan State football coach Mark Dantonio stepped down after 13 seasons with the program. It goes without saying that this is now a pivotal hire for the Spartans, but their options may be limited due to the timing of this news.

Michigan State will begin the search for its next football coach just hours before National Signing Day and after the coaching carousel had finished its spinning. While that may narrow the field of candidates, Michigan State still has several viable options. Shortly after Dantonio’s resignation, the oddsmakers at SportsLine released a list of odds for various candidates to take Dantonio’s place in East Lansing.

There is one clear favorite, per SportsLine’s odds, but there are also some interesting value bets out there. Let’s take a look at the odds on which coach will be the next to lead the Spartans.

Luke Fickell | -150 — As soon as the news of Dantonio’s resignation hit social media, Fickell’s name was the first one to come up. Fickell was the interim head coach at Ohio State in 2011 and led the Buckeyes to a 6-7 record. However, he later accepted the head coaching position at Cincinnati in 2017 and has totally rebuilt that program. Fickell’s first season with the Bearcats resulted in a 4-8 record, but since then he’s gone 22-5. Cincinnati made it to the AAC Championship Game in 2019, and Fickell was one of the more popular names on the coaching market. He wound up staying put, but would he leave Cincinnati to re-enter the Big Ten?

Pat Narduzzi | +300 — Narduzzi would be a bit of a natural successor to Dantonio at Michigan State. He worked as Dantonio’s defensive coordinator from 2007 to 2014 before taking the head coaching position at Pitt. In five seasons with the Panthers, Narduzzi has turned in a 36-29 record and has had just one losing record. In 2018, Narduzzi’s Panthers won the ACC Coastal. Michigan State may try to get him to return to East Lansing.

Mike Tressel | +400 — Tressel is currently Michigan State’s interim head coach while the Spartans sort out who the next permanent head coach will be. Like Narduzzi, Tressel followed Dantonio to Michigan State from Cincinnati. Tressel started out as the Spartans’ linebackers coach before becoming the team’s sole defensive coordinator in 2018. Tressel was also named Michigan State’s assistant head coach in 2019, so this would provide a more stable option for the school.

Chris Creighton | +800 — Taking the Michigan State job wouldn’t be too much of a change of scenery for Crieghton, who currently coaches the Eastern Michigan Eagles. Creighton has been there since the 2014 season and owns a record of 28-47 with the program. In the sake of fairness, Eastern Michigan has come a long way from winning three games in his first two seasons there.

Jim McElwain | +1000 — After a somewhat underwhelming stint at Florida, McElwain spent a year on Jim Harbaugh’s staff at Michigan before taking the Central Michigan head coaching job prior to the 2019 season. McElwain immediately led the Chippewas to an 8-6 record and an appearance in the MAC title game.
