That's fair, but I think that as long as the Day, Marotti, Pantoni triumvirate is in place, the talent gap is going to be too great for them to deal with. Also, their success against us under peak Dantonio was largely based on us being willing to play in a box and having only a so-so throwing game. That's not going to be the case under Day, although of course the usual "it's Sparty week so here comes the shitty weather" problem could always rear its ugly head. Ultimately, when it comes to game day play calling, I think Fickell's fine but Day's elite and is only going to get better. The biggest threat from Fickell at MSU would be him assisting Day in getting Harbaugh canned sooner as there's always the chance that the blind chicken UM program could stumble onto a great replacement.

The thing that is key is the focus on OSU from dantonio. You'd have to assume that stays in place with Fick but maybe not.

Even this year, with all that talent and Day calling the plays, Sparty was a proper pain in the ass for about 3 quarters. Played WAY above their heads and then, once their super bowl was a loss, seemed to crater for the year.
