Michigan State Spartans (official thread)

Luke should hold out for a better job. Sparty is in shambles right now.
I don't know if Luke would want the job but he has no ties to MSU like Dantonio, whe served as an assistant in E. Lansing for a number of years. People just assume that since Dantonio went from OSU to UC to MSU, Fickell would be likely to do the same. Brian Kelly went from UC to ND. Fick can do better than MSU whose organization is in sort of a mess right now.

If Hafley will bolt in the middle of the night for Boston fucking College then you have to think a mid major HC will jump at a legit mid tier P5 gig.

Especially when that job is geographically located in the middle of that coaches natural recruiting area.

Only con I see to it for Fick is any kind of looming sanctions from the Penn State impersonation thing.

If I was Fick I would stay away from it till that is settled. Taking over a midteir team with a bad team in a downturn is totally different than that plus them about to get hammered by the NCAA. MSU would probably be best to ride out this year with Tressel and then move forward when it's clearer what's going on. But hey maybe they get someone to take it with the threat of sanctions still there. But Dantonio doesn't just quit if this was nothing.

Fickell has never been someone trying to race up the coaching ladder. For a long time he was happy just being a coordinator. He took his time before taking the UC job. (He wanted the Pitt job that went to Narduzzi a couple years before.) I don't know how much of hurry he's in to take the next step or if MSU is a place that appeals to him. We'll see.

I really didn’t see Dantonio leaving. He’s not the kind of guy to just walk away. I saw him wanting to bring the program back to where it was a 3-5 years ago.

i have to believe the Blackwell situation is that bad for him to step down. It must not have been juicy enough for McButtnStuff to uncover....

All I give a damn about, selfishly I'll concede, is Sir Hypeness remaining at THE for at least the upcoming season and hopefully several more. For that reason, I would prefer that the Juggalo City College job not become available right now. Fickell's a solid coach, but he doesn't scare me at all at MSU.

how are the Catholic schools in Lansing?

he is on record as saying Catholic schools are important to his family which is why Cincinnati was a destination for him. Isn’t his wife also a big wig at a major insurance company?

I’m not saying he won’t take the MSU job. just saying its not a no brainer to move his family at this time. lots of things to consider other than money and P5 status. Luke is just a different guy.

Dantonio achieved, imo, peak MSU from '13-'15. I think Fick could duplicate that.

Last thing we freaking need is Fick getting Sparty back to that level at the same time Schiano is elevating Rutgers from FCS status and IU and Maryland have, at least, a pulse.

It would be worse news for our friends in AA but overall the B1G is plenty tough enough, we don't need anymore tough outs.

Yes, but what if Ohio State scheduled Eastern West Chattanooga State Technical College the week before Hate Week

Luke has a good thing going at UC. Why would he want to go try to clean up that mess?

But as I'm typing this, I've already answered my own question.

I can think of a couple million reasons.

Yeah, and that is (at least) per year. However, Fickell does have a $2M buyout provision with Cincinnati for this year.

Career wise Sparty being a "power 5" school in the B1G is a major "step up" from Cincinnati in the coaching ladder. I do think Sparty would be a "good fit" for him considering his experience in the B1G and recruiting in the midwest, etc. If offered the job, it's all going to come down to: Does he want to "move up" in his coaching career or is he just happy to stay where he is?
