Michigan State Spartans (official thread)

Mike Tressel, the nephew of former Ohio State coach Jim Tressel and Michigan State's defensive coordinator for the entirety of Dantonio's tenure, has been named interim head coach.

According to a report by David Jesse of the Detroit Free Press, Cincinnati head coach and former Ohio State defensive coordinator/interim head coach Luke Fickell “is the frontrunner” to replace Dantonio on a permanent basis, though “no deal is currently in place.”

For those not up to date on the allegations (such as me) against Dantonio:

Dantonio had long been scheduled to be deposed in a lawsuit involving a former Michigan State staffer. Curtis Blackwell, the team’s former recruiting director, sued the school and Dantonio for wrongful termination.
Monday evening, Blackwell’s lawyers alleged that Dantonio improperly allowed him to go to an in-home visit for a five-star recruit and that Dantonio helped arrange athletic department employment for family members of players.

Per the Detroit Free-Press, Dantonio said that he cleared the hires with compliance in his Jan. 10 deposition. His lawyers also told the paper that the Monday night allegations were a “sham.”
As for the first claim, Dantonio, in his Jan. 10 deposition, said he never directed Blackwell to talk to Skandalaris about employment for family members of "high profile recruits," but he acknowledged that family members were hired — and all were approved by MSU's compliance department, Dantonio said.

Blackwell's lawyers dispute that, citing a Jan. 21 deposition by MSU compliance officer Jennifer Smith, who said she "did not recall the compliance office approving any such arrangements."

Why did Dantonio wait until now to step down?

Retention bonus: $700,000 every July 1; $4,300,000 if he’s still the coach on 1/15/20

It isn’t a giant surprise that he stepped down after some rough years in East Lansing, but the timing of the move is extremely interesting. He collected a $4.3 million bonus by remaining with the team through January 15.

Narduzzi?

Just sayin':

1) He has gone 8-5, 8-5, 5-7, 7-7, and 8-5 at Pitt; and he got a big contract extension a couple years ago. Apparently Pitt is content with mediocrity in their football program.

2) He's under contract at Pitt through 2024; however, that never stopped a coach from switching teams in the past.

3) I do think Pitt's chances of getting into the ACC Championship Game from the ACC Coastal are far better than Sparty's chances of getting into the B1G Championship Game from the B1G East. The gap between Ohio State, scUM, and the Pedsters vs Sparty is only widening.

I have been saying for awhile that this would be the homerun.

Coach D retires so MSU can show him love.
Now that he has retired MSU can out the whole Blackwell situation behind them (AD and HC now gone so who ya gonna sue?)
The recruiting was never going to get better with this overall staff and the apparent blackballing MSU had in Detroit due to the Blackwell firing (for those that don't know Blackwell runs a huge recruiting outfit in Detroit)

And the best part is MSU now has a chance to hire someone who might understand that you increase your chances to win games if you
1- try to out score teams
2- look into the idea of returning punts and kickoffs
3- have passing attack that is not from the 1970's
4- realize that the punt is not the most exciting play in football

I like the defensive style but special teams play and offensive creativity had become non existent. I would like to get in a coach that valued special teams more for sure. I would love for MSU to at least embrace the Va TEch idea of bad ass defense and special teams. I mean there offense was/is still wanting but the other 2 areas are stellar.

BTW should I want Fickell? He seems to be the hot hot rumor
