Michigan State Spartans (official thread)

I don't totally agree. Franklin has put together pretty good recruiting classes: 2018: #5, 2019: #11, 2020: #14. They could be slightly sliding backwards there; however, I wouldn't necessarily call that "stagnation". They are still a player for the #2 spot in the B1G East. Where as Sparty is now battling Indiana for the #4 B1G East spot.

He's a good recruiter, but his classes don't reach their highs. He's not good at developing them.
I meant the fans are over the honeymoon... whatever hype he's had, it's gone. They went from Cusp of Eliteness to Great to Good, and stuck there.
They're #2 in B1G East until somebody - anybody - steps up. West #2 beat them last year... Minnesota would have been #2 in the Big East.
It's just a question if any of Sparty, Maryland, Indiana, Rutgers can get their shit together ... if so, Michigan and PSU are paper tigers.

It's a shame The Pirate is off the market. He'd have livened things up in the B1G.

There's always the guy that is NEVER "off the market" to liven things up in the B1G:

C'mon man! He did such a great job with the Browns!
Even better with the Giants.

I can already hear the Pete Carroll comparisons coming if that's the direction they go. Carroll was a two-time failure as an NFL HC and nobody thought he would succeed at USC. There's a couple of HUGE differences, though:

Carroll, though fired twice after short stints with the Jets and Patriots, was actually fairly successful overall. He was fired after one year with the Jets with a 6-10 record...but it's the Jets. They suck eternally. In three seasons in New England, he went 27-21 (10-6, 9-7, 8-8), went to the playoffs twice, even winning the wildcard game his first year. His overall record in the NFL was 33-31, 34-33 including the playoffs. Not terrible, by any means. Plus, Petey is/was a high energy, charismatic guy which allowed him to kill it in recruiting.

Pat Shurmur's record is abysmal. Two years in Cleveland brought a 9-23 record. He won his only game as the interim HC in Philadelphia in 2015 after Chip Kelly was canned. He then went 9-23 again in two years with the Giants. That gives him an overall record of 19-46 (including his win as interim) in four seasons. Pat Shurmur is objectively a terrible HC. Factor in the fact that he has the charisma of a rotting 2x4, it's hard to see him moving the needle much on the recruiting trail.

He would be an objectively terrible hire. Literally the only thing he has going for him with regard to Sparty is he's an alum.
